Key Quest

New player to Key Quest, I started playing this when I read that lab maps could be gotten. (The lab's been a dream of mine since I was little) However, I would like to ask, do they only appear with Gold keys, or can they be gotten with Silver keys too? The TDN page specifies that PBs can only be gotten from Gold keys, but makes no specification about the map pieces, and searching this thread, you guys seem to be using only Gold keys for maps...

Yes, only gold keys can be used to obtain lab map pieces.

If anyone would like to play KQ I am online quite a lot especially in the evenings(uk time) and would be happy to play

Not keen on mini games as for some reason they are very slow for me and I generally lose - has anyone got any ideas why?

Anyway if anyone would like a friendly game please get in touch

I don't know if I'm missing something but maybe someone else can help.

In the mini game where you water the flowers, how is it possible that some people complete it so quickly? I usually haven't even finished growing my flowers before my opponent has won.

If you position your mouse just right, you can water two flowers at once. It's also quicker to water all your flowers, then cut the flower heads, so you don't have to switch between tools as much. Hope that helps. ^_^

Ok so I know that skipping a turn to gain advantage is considered cheating. i.e if someone is hit by the pant devil and then goes AFK. But I played someone today and am not sure if they technically cheated. They were one square away from a key so I played Giant Lint Ball on them. When it was their turn, they played their 'Battle Duel' card as a way of getting out of the block and essentially skipping their turn. Is this allowed?

If they chose to duel you, it would still be their turn after the duel was over. They then should have taken their turn; if they didn't, they did indeed skip it. I don't know why they'd duel when they were lint-balled, though -- if you won, you'd get to steal a card, but if they did, they wouldn't get anything from it! Pretty silly.

Hmm, yeah I think that they just used the Duel Battle powerup to try and disguise the fact that they were skipping their turn. Sneaky! Like you said, I ended up winning anyway so it all worked out. Thanks

Not knowing the ettiquette, why would skipping a turn like that be considered cheating? I'd assume if it's possible to do under Neo rules then it's fair game.

Not that I play KQ, it runs too slow for me :P

It's basically because you can't collect anything when you are lint-balled. For example: you are beside a key. your opponent plays a lint ball card at you. If you still rolled the dice, you will have to go a lot of squares before you can get it/get it by other means. If you skip your turn, the next turn the lint-ball is not in effect anymore and you can collect it without going through a lot of squares/win in a minigame/land in the treasure.

Played 20 games of KQ yesterday (NST day).

Win record with Duma: 9-10 (47.37%)

Overall win record: 41.82% (138 wins out of 330)

7 silver keys unused.

It's considered cheating because you wouldn't do it on a real board game with friends. Just saying i skip my turn isn't going to want them play with you again.

I wonder if it wouldn't be much better if TNT just made the bad PU (like lint ball or pant devil) keep having effect until you rolled again. So if you went AFK, it would still be in effect when you "return"

You might get more quitters but you can see that on the color of the face. Skipping your turn won't effect your green smiley face.

I was never really into key quest unless I played with someone I knew cause

1) Quitters

2) I feel like quitting cus the other player was pro and had 1500 while they robbed me of my last 100 =( I realize quitting isn't a good thing, but when we had a 1500 pt difference and he laughed at me, I couldn't help but click that x on my webpage =(

I have lost games when I was too nice to a player, even when it seemed like I was creaming them. Once, I was up by 4 keys and 3 spaces from the exit, so I didn't use my lintball on them. They landed on the treasure chest and got a swapping-keys potion. I rolled a 1, then they took one of my far keys, then they kept getting distraction potions/rainbow fountain waters/lintballs, while I rolled 1's and 2's, landed on unavoidable wrong-faerie spaces, got portaled, and lost the race to the exit. So I don't take anything for granted (though I still don't lint if I'm very close to the exit and pretty far ahead, and they're near the treasure, because I'd rather they get the NP from it, even though it's risky for me). (And there have been plenty of times when I came from behind and won, so I'll also prolong a game no matter how insurmountable the odds seem.)

Just to put things in perspective, that maybe they're showing you respect as a good player whom, if the tides of luck turn your way, might steal the game from them, rather than laughing at you.

KQ keeps freezing my computer. It never used to do that, but it is so glitchy that I can no longer play while doing ANYTHING else on the computer. Right now I have to start the game, the once I'm in the dice rolling page, I can turn my Netflix, or word document or whatever back on, then I have to completely quit everything again to start another game.

It's not my computer, it has no problems running multiple programs when KQ and only KQ are not involved. It's not my Internet connection or browser for the same reason.

And to make matters worse, I can't report the bug. Neopets has my contact form link blocked. Every time I try, it says that I have reached the page in error. Can someone send me the bug report link or possibly have any advice?

I'm been playing NP for nearly 7 years and KQ since it was released.

While I was on the Key Quest board looking for the low-res link, I found a thread where someone was talking about how they got annoyed when they got thrashed in a game, and the other person said 'good job'. So it got me thinking, do people really get that annoyed when someone says something like that after a game. If so, why?

On the same thread, someone said that by saying 'Good game', they were thanking the other player for not quitting during the game and not cheating, which I agree with.

So, what do you guys think about it?

I think I don't care what anyone says, as long as they aren't being vicious. I've had people make threats and say really odd things and I think "I hope you have a weird sense of humor because you are freaking me out!!!" I am a fairly "nice" player as described by siniri. While I may not always win, I prefer to win by making smart moves rather than taking every chance to mess up the other player. I do get that it is fair to do so but I hate when people constantly do it to me (put a lintball in front of me the second they get it just because), so I treat others how I want to be treated :)

But I came to this topic to say I wish there were more in-depth guides for the mini-games. Winning those keys is often the difference between 1st and 2nd place.

Here are some of my mini-game tips/comments/questions:

For Berry Blaster, just click as fast as you can machine gun style near any fruit/group of fruits. I almost always win as I see other people aiming and shooting one fruit at a time. I've only been beaten by people who use my same technique.

Fruit Picker: I believe the rainbow fruits are worth the most points. Again, I almost always win because I go for these rather than whatever is close. I'd love to see a point break down of the different fruits.

Neogarden Grow: I wish I knew exactly where to position it to water two seeds at once. It happens sometimes but don't have it down to a science by any means.

Orbliteration: I wish I knew which orbs pink orbs were clickable from which blue orbs. Sometimes I will move to an orb with a pink one right next to it, but it won't be clickable. Even if this happens, I have done well by constantly moving from blue orb to orb.

Petpet Snare: I think opponents think I am about 5 years old based on my performance here. I have only ever successfully looped ONE INSECT. EVER!!!!! I have no clue what I am doing wrong and how to fix it. It always says incorrect loop. So it is the kiss of death if this game pops up >.< If anyone has a clue what I may be doing wrong, I'd love some tips!!!

Shenkuu Showers: Do you get more points for protecting the same petpets for the longest amount of time? Or the larger amount of petpets (moving to where you can cover the largest group)? I never win this game and I am not sure why. Tips??

I will always say good game except when someone cheated on me (went afk after a pant devil/lint ball event while just in front of a key or treasure chest). I really don't care if I win or lose.

For the mini games:

(Thanks for the fruit picker tips! Didn't realize they had different points)

Orbliteration: You have to keep looking at what your opponent does. The ones that are not clickable are the ones that your opponent already picked. If you try to remember those and check for "really new" orbs you can get more purple orbs by only clicking on the real ones and you wont waste time clicking on the false orbs.

Petpet Snare: You might be moving too fast. Try making the circles without moving your mouse so fast, but fast enough so you have the petpetpet before your opponent has one. If he/she catches one before you do, even if it's a different one, you will have an incorrect loop. Try by just making a triangle, Make a move like this: \ / . So go down next to a petpetpet and move your mouse back up, don't make a circle, just down and up. It will count.

Shenkuu Showers: As far as I know you don't get more point for a longer time, a bigger group give more as each petpet will give you points and the pink umbrella doubles the score. I will even stop protecting them for a while if there is a black cloud on top so I don't get the lightning, then move back to them as quickly as possible.

For the "freezing spider game" if you get stuck (apparently when you grab those things that are REALLY close to you) you can right click the game screen, then left click on the game screen again. That will unfreeze the game for you. It really comes down to picking the purple orbs. Freeze your opponent as fast as you can and you'll win. I believe the 6 angled items to collect gives the most points. In this picture it's the top one from the items to collect (with an arrow pointing upwards) But grab as many items as you can.

I know what you mean - as much as I try to win, I don't care much either way. I usually can only play once or twice when I am at a decent PC so I can admit I do get frustrated when I only get a worthless background and stamp...!!!

No problem. Please try the fruit picker tip and make sure I am right. I have never calculated every point but I did note I got more when I picked the rainbow ones. I don't want to tell you the wrong thing if it was a fluke but I believe it is the case!

Orbs - Okay that definitely makes sense. Here I was thinking the game was just kinda iffy but good to know there is a reason I was having that issue.

Petpet Snare - Great tips. I have never tried going slower or that shape so that will probably make all the difference.

Shenkuu - Hmmm... I will have to test this out further. You only get the points when the little hearts appear, right? So it could also be an issue of positioning where the umbrella isn't fully covering them.

Great tips and very helpful! I will be sure to try them out soon although I don't get to play as much as I'd like.

For petpet snare, just make the smallest, fastest triangle you can. You just need to cover a piece of the petpet; you don't have to encircle it (if you're trying to, you're probably getting timed out by your opponent). I try to start each "circle" just above the center of the petpet's back, then I jerk my hand down and to the left, then over to the right and back up, sort of in a very small circle (it's more a small spasm than a precise movement); this combo ensures that I always have a correct loop no matter how fast I move my hand. Playing on low quality during the mini-game also helps if you have a slow computer.

For berry blaster, I go after the black fruit (though I pick up anything on the way), and I usually win (unless it glitches -- KQ glitches on me a lot lately).

I know where the double spots are on the watering game, but I don't have a screenie. I'm sure someone does. I line it up based on where the bottom of the can hits the grass blades at the bottom (it's a more precise visual than trying to position the top of the can in the middle of a blue field).

Thanks for the fruit picker and spyder game tips (especially the right-click-left-click one!).

For the umbrella game, it's 100% time under umbrella times the number of petpets protected times any bonuses, and it's binary -- either the petpet is protected or it's not. So at the beginning, I rush to the side to protect a petpet heading "off" screen, hoping he'll bring some friends back. I do not give up a double or triple (or the rare quadruple) to gain a pink bonus or avoid a gray bonus (but of course I avoid lightning, trying to hold onto as many of my set as I can to decrease the likelihood of it being completely stolen). Since some move faster than others, I keep an eye out for any other sets that might form soon, especially if mine is threatening to break up, or if someone's about to join my opponent's set and I don't have a set of my own, I'll go snag it first to avoid letting him rake up more points. My goals in this game are (in "order," in that I don't sacrifice an earlier goal for a later goal): 1) get the biggest combo I can, 2) prevent my opponent from getting huge combos by escorting anybody threatening to join his group under my own umbrella) 3) get any pink bonuses/avoid gray bonuses. Obviously lightning stops all of these goals, so I guess avoiding it is goal 0.

I tried it today, but it seems that there aren't different points. I did it very slowly, picking one by one waiting for my score to change but I got 100 points for every fruit, I picked 1 of each kind but received the same points for every fruit.
