Years and Years ago , you could paint your Pets "Glass" or "Stone"  
They were not popular and the colors were discontinued
Glass pets were changed to Tyrannian
and Stone pets to Island
however the paint brushes still exist as R180 (retired) items and you can buy them from user shops but you can't use them 

Unicorn Paint Brush  was an idea that didn't really take off ... they tried to add unicorns to the pets .. 
but i think they decided to create a whole new Unicorn pet and call it "Uni" ... then removed the Paint Brush from the site and replaced it with Uni Gem 
Unicorn pets were thus changed to the basic Red we all know and love

This is one of the last people to win on the Wishing Well, I often check out the lookups of interesting usernames because I'm nosy!  but I LOVE this guy's pet names!

I guess this guy isn't the best person to have as your owner though, judging by all the sad faces.  😧

I believe Lutari's are inspired by beavers or otters and are very much aquatic in real life.

I understand that it's based on a catfish, and this concept is fine.
But the texture and colour just look horrible to me, idk why.
Maybe because it does not match with the "cartoony" style of the other Mara pets(?).

I kinda like the hair and the walking stick, but that's  about it.  It's too saturated.  It's like he popped it into a vat of dye, and stuck it on without rinsing or anything.  Or maybe hit it with a can of paint before he  put it on.  

I have her!  Yes!  I got really lucky with the lab ray and deadly dice with my lab rat pet, hah!  
 
I also went ahead and made my last two side accounts so that I could have room in 4 months for the next time this happens to me.  Eh.

I am not impressed with Shoyru day this year. Swamp gas? Seriously? ugh.

Not sayin' anything about the new colour because what's the point, lol.
That's a cute outfit though! Hiking is a good social distancing activity too! Well... as long as you're not driving to get there, don't go taking your germs into another area! 😮
There's a lot of misapprehension about that over here. People just don't understand why they can't drive somewhere out of their area to get their exercise, it took me a while to wrap my head around it because it's not like they're spewing germs out of their car exhaust as they go is it! But I realise it's all about containment; asymptomatic people going out of their area is what's spreading this beast.
Maybe if we were all painted swamp gas it'd keep people away from each other a lot more. 😷

I never have before, but I agree with you that that little guy is SO CUTE!  Most I've ever done before is to look at stuff I could stick on a pet I'm considering adopting, or considering turning one of my current guys into.

It's not that long ago, I just can't remember due to my broken brain.   It was after a conversation on here with Deboratibi as she said you could have an account without a pet on it, so I thought sending Frank out into the wide world would be a better option than me perpetually ignoring him. Deb's been inactive for a while now, but I'm gonna say two years max since I did this? Pretty sure TNT aren't going to have messed about with this during that timeframe.

You definitely can have an account with no pets on it; I experimented with this with my second account ages ago.
I pounded poor Frank (sorry, fella) he was the only pet I had on there at the time, and the account continued to exist. You can't actually do anything without a pet on the account though, you just get prompted to make a pet and can't navigate beyond that, so the account basically just becomes a space-holder. No using it for faerie quests or anything like that, you can't access the shop wiz.
Disclaimer! All the second half of that last statement is somewhat dubious in its accuracy! I remember not being able to do anything, but no concrete details any more, just strong impressions remain now.
In the end I got Frank back out of the Pound because I could see there was no point in a petless account. I'm quite sure he needs a lot of therapy now. 😨

I think it's possible to create an account without making a pet. (Or at least, it used to be, because last year I stumbled on an account I'd apparently made 8 years prior (and had completely forgotten about), and it didn't have any pets on it yet.)

I think it's 4 to 6 months before you can adopt fancy pets. I just googled it.
Account Age Restrictions Players whose accounts are less than 4 months old have limited capacity to receive painted and trained Neopets.
 
I feel you, I adopted 4 pets in a month, just looking for one extra, ended up with two more lol. It really is addicting. 

The worst part is that I looked, and found a camo acara that I like in there.  The name isn't ideal, but she's cute.  And will probably be long gone before I can snag her.  Oops.  How old do you need to be to adopt fancy pets again?  Hahaha.
