agrinwithoutacat got a reaction from juststoppingby in I have baby chickens!
So, my mom (a school librarian) brought home baby chickens from work. A Pre-K classroom hatched them from eggs and they needed a good home. My mom has wanted chickens for a while now, so when no one else could take them she snatched them up. We have seven, and four more are on the way once they are out of intensive care (they have pneumonia). They're a week old. No idea if they're boys or girls yet, but once they're about 4-6 weeks old we'll be able to tell.

So far, everything is going well. You can kinda barely see it on the middle chick in the first picture, but they're starting to get their first set of real feathers! The yellow down is being replaced by white, mostly just on the wings right now. In a few more weeks they'll get their second set of feathers.

Right now they have to stay in the house, but in four more weeks we'll have a coop built for them and they'll be old enough to go outside.

    So exciting!

I'm definitely looking forward to trying some fresh eggs! I've heard they're better than store-bought, and I like those plenty already. Maybe five to six more months and our girls will be ready to start laying. I think we'll have to keep any roosters separate, though, to avoid fertilizing the eggs. Not sure how we'll do that.

I'm in central Texas, so the weather is pretty reasonable most of the year. It gets hot in the summer, but the winters don't get very brutal. Many chickens can handle cold down to something like -20F, so that shouldn't be a problem. It gets hot in the summer here, though, so we'll have to have good ventilation in the coop to make sure they don't overheat. I've read tips like feeding them frozen watermelon and adding ice to their water, or having a mister if it's not already too humid. We'll figure that out in a few months when the time comes, I guess. Hopefully this year isn't like last year, where we had something like 100 days that were over 100 degrees. Not in a row, thankfully, but it's still way higher than the average. Winter was cold this year, so hopefully summer is cool as well.

It is a bit of work. Right now we're changing out the wood shavings twice a day, and changing their food and water daily. Also, when they're this young (it's a little gross, sorry) you actually have to check their butts for dried poop. It can block them up and then they'll die. They're doing good on that front, though, so far. I'm sure cleaning up after them will get harder as they get bigger, but right now it's not too bad.

It's that time of year again! I haven't colored eggs in YEARS...so I felt like giving it a try today. It was the first time I hollowed out an egg by poking a hole an blowing out the yolk. I was totally prepared to make an omelette but after that experience I seemed to have lost my appetite. haha anyways! art history got the best of me yet again..

So I've been haggling with the food shop in Neopia Central, and I've been haggling with the shopkeeper for a carrot that costs 1,856..
So my strategy was to give him half of what he wanted, then if he didn't accept, i would drop down to 1 NP (lol)
so this is how it went:

The Shopkeeper says 'Hmmm, no, im not going any lower than 4,040 Neopoints...'

The Shopkeeper says 'I wont take less than 9,107 Neopoints for it.'

The Shopkeeper says 'Hmmm, no, im not going any lower than 13,619 Neopoints...'

The Shopkeeper says 'Surely you would pay at least 21,545 Neopoints for this item?'

The Shopkeeper says 'I paid much more than 1 for this item... give me 32,000 and it's yours.'

The Shopkeeper says 'Tum de dum... Im not going to accept less than 47,999!'

The Shopkeeper says 'May your hair fall out and your tongue grow warts. Im not going lower than 73,005.'

The Shopkeeper says 'May your hair fall out and your tongue grow warts. Im not going lower than 108,013.'

The Shopkeeper says 'You are a very offensive person. I demand 162,478 Neopoints!!!!!'

The Shopkeeper says 'May your crops be devoured by locusts and your teeth rot. No less than 244,126!'

The Shopkeeper says 'What... 101,000... I have to make a living you know. What about 436,036?'

The Shopkeeper says 'May your ears turn purple and fall off! Pay me at least 739,055!'

The Shopkeeper says 'I did not become a shopkeeper to be insulted!! My final offer is 941,062!!'

The Shopkeeper says 'May your crops be devoured by locusts and your teeth rot. No less than 1,042,996!'

"RIGHT NOW I'M REALLY ANNOYED. BEGONE. DON'T COME BACK!"

agrinwithoutacat reacted to Saxen in Expensive avatars: just a show-off?
Well... SuAP, BCG & MSPP are lendables, so it's hardly someone saying they're rich. A lot of people are proud of those avatars because it takes A LOT of hard work to get them. Your account has to be of a certain standard before someone will lend you an item worth millions (and billions) of neopoints. Stamps, Neodeck cards, customised pets etc are not cheap by any means.

As for 'Richest' etc., if you're that committed to avatar collecting that you spend 10million on an avatar and put all that work in, would you not be proud of it?

Just because it's your personal preference that these avatars aren't 'pretty', doesn't mean that everyone shares your view, and it doesn't mean they're 'showing off' in the sense that you're implying. Being proud of something and showing off aren't the same thing.

I'm an avatar collector and to be honest I kind of resent this question xD I've worked really hard for all of my avatars and if I want to parade them then I will, because I've put the time and effort in to get them.

First of all, congrats for getting not just one but two evil coconuts! :) So far I've been lucky enough to get one, but that was a long time ago.

If you can't find something in the shop wizard, always check the trading post and/or auctions. From my searches, it looks like the Golden Evil Coconut is worth about 150K, and the cheapest I can find for the Wailing Evil Coconut is 175K. So, in total you could make a cool 300K by selling them on the TP.

Whether you sell them or not is up to you. Think about if there's something you're saving for that you could put the np towards, or maybe you want to start collecting and put them in your album. You can also hold onto them in your SBD and sell later, but who knows what the price will do. Unless you really plan on collecting them I probably would just sell them, myself. But, like I said, it's up to you.

As for anti-Semetic, I suppose it's all in how you look at it. To the Hindu faith, it's called sauvastika and, when left-facing, is a symbol for the goddess Kali. It's also found in Buddhism.
"Sanskrit sauvastika is the 'vrddhi'* of svastika, attested as an adjective meaning "benedictive, salutatory". (*a technical term for a group of long vowels)
Sadly, the Nazis made it into a symbol of their evil. It was originally something very pacifistic.

Well, at least I always keep them fed. Virtual though they are, I wouldn't want to starve them, especially when food is so abundant (omelettes and jellies, anyone?). I do kind of forget about them other than that sometimes, though. I suppose I should switch them out here and there, just to be safe. Plus, their pet lookups don't look so nice when they have that sad face on.

FWIW I dont think they should bring the avatars back,

I cant imagine how upset I would feel if I won one of the competitions for writing after trying to win for years only to have the avatar given away as if it meant nothing,

I dont actually want to get an avatar for doing well in a game if I didnt achieve it myself, Im proud of the ones I worked for and there are plenty I wish I could get but Im not good enough yet and making them free to everyone with no effort just totally spoils the whole idea

They might as well just give us all the best gold trophy's for all the events at the top level as well...and then of course we wouldnt have to take part in any plots or events we could just get handed the prizes and merit trophies and avatars ... that just spoils it for me totally...just my opinion of course

bringing out new avatars would be fair enough I think

If cats were indigenous to these areas, I could understand having an issue with it. Obviously, in most parts of the world, that isn't the case. Cats live in America because people brought them here, and because they don't really belong in the ecosystems we brought them into, it can cause problems for the species that do. They were brought as pets, or to catch mice, whatever, so if the argument is leaving nature alone...then they should be pets, because there is no other "natural" reason for them to be here. I would call it being responsible, but definitely not cruel. I think feral cat populations should definitely be controlled, and this is, by far, the least cruel way to do that.

agrinwithoutacat reacted to siniri in Feral kitties and TNR
Feral cats aren't running free across the plains (well, some of them are, but their populations are under control). TNR programs are usually employed in cities, where there is a dense population (and thus a high birth rate and increased transmission of infectious diseases such as FLV, FIV, rabies, etc.) and few natural predators (such as coyotes, larger feline species, and birds of prey). This combination means that the population of feral cats would go through rapid increases until the population was brought under control by disease, starvation (if the population exceeds their food source), and/or human intervention (as the cats become a nuisance and likely carriers of diseases that could infect humans or their pets, people will insist that the population is brought under control; in addition, more cats will be hit by vehicles, die by poisoning as food becomes scarce and they eat insects/rodents that were poisoned, etc.). I think cats suffer a lot more from the diseases and food scarcity that accompany unregulated population growth than they do from being neutered or spayed.
