crystalsjoy
Okay so I'm pretty sure the virus is from neopets. It happened to me TWICE in three hours. I only visit neopets and facebook and no one else uses my computer. I asked everyone and nobody has been on my computer. So I was on neopets as usual and I went to the KQ page. Suddenly the page changes to a random link with "myvnc" in it and there is a message that I have malware (that is a scam) and also a scam window from MSE telling me I have 3 viruses. It ONLY happens on neopets. I checked like tons of other sites and that didn't occur. So I repeat it ONLY happens on neopets, and it happened twice. (I took like a 2 hour break and I came back to neo and it happened again.) I'm now scared to go to neo, I don't want to mess up my computer for a game. :/
Guest Tahalika
Sounds to me like it's some sort of advertisement that's causing it. Do you have an adblocker? Firefox/Chrome both have free extensions you can add that blocks ads, so it may be in your best interest to get that downloaded. hrtbrk, spookydana and Emily
crystalsjoy
nope and I'm not coming to neo till its fixed
Guest Tahalika
Well it may not be fixed for a while if it indeed is an ad. Especially since the staff is gonna be out of the office for a while. Is there a reason you seem adverse to just getting an adblocker?

calliecupcakespeace
I also recommend getting Adblock, it makes the ads go invisible.. well actually that's false, they just disappear!
Guest Tahalika
Completely covering the ads? What do you mean, the virus/scam or the adblocker? Well, wouldn't go amiss to answer it for both. Adblockers work by seeking out specific codes that are typical for ads; I'm not too good with HTML so I can't really tell what the specific codes are. I've never really used Chrome's adblocker before, so I have no clue how it works, but Firefox's Adblock Plus does a very solid job with completely blocking ads. So it should be able to nab the bad virus ad with no problems. I use Adblock Plus and haven't had the problem with Key Quest, which is what brought to mind the potential of it being a virus ad. If you were asking about the virus, no the virus isn't completely covering all ads; it's merely a specific ad that puts itself as a main focus. They will often bring up a pop-up that says your computer has threats, or take you to a new page that does a "scan." However, the scan is completely false and is just used to horrify you; actual scans take far longer than they usually portray. The biggest reason they do this is so they can trick you into downloading the virus in a false portrayal of an anti-virus program. rinoa812

Wildbreeze
I've had some obnoxious ads do that to me, too. I also recommend AdBlock. I put it off for ages, but now I don't have all the ridiculous ads on Neopets that slow it down and make some games impossible to play. spookydana
crystalsjoy
I know that the scan was fake, I'm not stupid to fall on those scams. I meant, if I download the chrome adblock, will it block the malware/virus that comes with the ad? And did anyone get this malware/virus pop up? (the pop up itself is a malware/virus) P.S. The scan was pretty scary to watch, it was like when you open the "computer" window and the disks show up and their memory was moving left and right. Guest Tahalika
It should, yes. It completely takes out the ad coding, so it would take out the virus coding as well.
AJ11
I was on Key Quest today a couple of times and didnt have any problems, however I am premium so I dont get the adverts. So it does sound like it is an advert rather than the site its self. Adblocker is pretty well respected as far as I know, why not google it and find out a bit more it might make you feel a bit safer, its horrible when something like that happens good luck hope you get it sorted soon spookydana
Pascalla
Yee, I have Adblock Plus so I no longer receive pop ups or ads on Neopets-- and it was weird because I would only ever receive pop ups while on Neopets. Also, I suggest getting some nice protection or removal software just in case. You can find some decent free software for that so don't feel that you have to pay an arm and a leg. After that, going on Neopets should be fine. Know that some sites/videos aren't adblock friendly since ads are how they receive the money that puts food on the table. You can usually change the settings so that ads aren't blocked on certain sites.
siniri
While it might be caused by one of Neopets' ads, it might also be true that you already have malware on your computer, and it takes over your browser and tries to redirect it to the malware site. If you only go on Neopets and Facebook, the reason it might show up only on one might have to do with Facebook being more secure (https vs. http). It could have been on your computer for months, through casual browsing. I would really suggest you do a full-system scan. If you have Windows, Microsoft Security Essentials is free and pretty good, without slowing down your computer too much (some free anti-malware actually contains malware). The other thing you could do is search for the specifics of the message you're getting and see if there's a recommendation for fixing it (just make sure you're on a legit website and not the scammers' website that's trying to get you to download malware). It might just be an ad, but it also might be malware. You need to scan your system to make sure it's clean. Mouseykins
crystalsjoy
I'm pretty sure it's not from my computer. I did a full scan nothing was found. Also that thing only pops up on neopets, and I know t hat because I went on a lot of sites since then and nothing of that happened. So can you just take the fact that neo is awful this days? siniri
I'm pretty sure it's not from my computer. I did a full scan nothing was found. Also that thing only pops up on neopets, and I know t hat because I went on a lot of sites since then and nothing of that happened. So can you just take the fact that neo is awful this days? Sorry, no, I can't take that as fact just because one person is having malware issues. Given the thousands of daily Neopets users, if it were from the site, someone else would probably have had the same issue by now. Since no one has yet come forward to say they've been having the same issue, it's just as likely that your computer has malware that right now is only manifesting itself on Neopets for some reason. Others provided suggestions on what to do in case it was a bad advertisement. In addition to the above suggestions, you could also try to take a screenshot of the ad that you think is causing the glitch (or at least a description of it, if you saw it), the exact website you were redirected to (from your browser history, obviously don't go there again), etc., and send them in a ticket so TNT can remove the offensive ad ASAP. In addition to or instead of Ad Block Plus, you might consider the NoScript extension, which prevents website from running scripts unless you give them permission. You can give permission based on the origin of the script (e.g., always allow scripts from neopets.com to run, but block all other scripts trying to run when you're on neopets.com, which blocks any nefarious scripts from ads). When you first install it, it can take a while to adjust permissions to get sites working with the minimum scripts necessary (e.g., Neopets also needs scripts from a few other companies, for certain games or areas of the site), but it will remember the permissions for websites, so once you've set them, you'll only have to adjust them occasionally. I provided suggestions on what you could do to make sure it's not an issue with your computer, to check the other possibility. I'm glad your scan came back clean. However, depending on how up-to-date and comprehensive your anti-malware program is (and how good the malware in question is at hiding), it might still have missed something. That's why I recommended trying to search for more information, to see if there's a hidden malware that requires a specific tool to remove it. hrtbrk
If it's an ad, there's not much Neopets can do aside from contacting their ad provider. There are, however, several precautionary measures that you can take when it comes to things like this. First, you can get adblock, as mentioned. Secondly, there are add-ons that prevent other applications from running so look into NoScript or Request Policy if you are concerned about sites you view on the internet. poodgereal
I decided to play the deleted game Jelly Processing Plant, it then brought up a different window, and started downloading it. I thought nothing of it, but then my browser (Google Chrome) told me it could harm my computer, so I chose discard and IMMEDIATELY ran a scan on MalwareBytes, luckly, nothing was picked up. If you want to look into this, here is the website url. http://www.neopets.com/halloween/gamegraveyard.phtml Just dont blame me if you get a virus.
