Tedhaun Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 TDN's not that dead if you ask me, another forum I go called Another General Forum (once known as ChatSource) has been feeling inactive these days since the new owner bought the site. I feel like the only person keeping that forum alive. :P Quote
Spritzie Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 School is starting for a lot of members, so things tend to become more quiet for awhile while everyone gets into the swing of back-to-school. Weather-wise, we just got hit with a huge thunderstorm out of nowhere. There were hardly any clouds in the sky, then it was pouring, and the wind was blowing the rain sideways. And I believe we've still having aftershocks from Monday's earthquake in southern Colorado. Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 It's pretty cloudy where I am, and I have to go back to job training in less than two weeks from now (since I no longer go to school). Time does go by pretty fast now that you come to think of it. o_O Nonetheless, I'll still be active as always. Quote
rachiee Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 I was out of state when the earthquake hit. I find it kinda weird that the epicenter of that quake was in Virginia, which isn't on any plate boundary. (Not sleeping in Earth Science pays off, eh?) Anyway, it's pretty sunny with some clouds right now. Earlier today, it was raining pretty hard, and I think that it's supposed to be sunny tomorrow. Then it's going to rain over the weekend then get sunny again. I don't understand New York weather at all. I really hope it doesn't rain tomorrow because I want to make a trip to the craft store to pick up a few things...that is, if one of my parents lets me do so. :) Also, I just realized that school starts back in less than two weeks. All I've done this summer was derp around on Neopets, tumblr and here, read Homestuck, watch Degrassi and work on random art projects. I did pick at my assignments (just a little bit) earlier this summer and now I'll really have to buckle down because most of them are barely done. :( I have a lot of regrets because I was given two months to do everything, and my procrastination has gone way too far. Oh well, welcome to high school I guess. I hope I can still be active here during the school year. If I get a study hall then that's pretty much a given, but if I don't get a study hall then chances are I won't be on the 'net as much as I usually am. Wow, I think this is the longest post I've made in a while :P Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 For some odd reason, I didn't even feel a bit of that earthquake, and I'm in the Northeastern US. I don't know if was unaware of it, I didn't notice any damage from that quake where I live. Quote
Spritzie Posted August 25, 2011 Posted August 25, 2011 Supposedly, the earthquake here, that was about 90 miles south of me, was felt as far as 60 miles north of me, but I didn't feel it, though I guess hundreds of people in my city felt it. Quote
fossik Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 Ooooh earthquake talk! I live in New Zealand and my city (Christchurch in case you were intrigued) has had three major earthquakes over the last year which has destroyed our city. Last year there was a magnitude 7.1 at 30km/18 miles deep. It occured at 4am though and thankfully nobody was killed, and mostly old building were damaged. This year in February there was a magnitude 6.3 at 10km/6 miles deep located 3km/1.8 miles away from central city. I was in central city at the time and it was probably the most horrible thing I ever experienced. Buildings exploded from the pressure and the ground cracked right next to me. I also saw a few people die. There was another magnitude 6.3 in June in which I was in my house. I was in my hallway when it struck and so I was luckily right next to a doorframe, but standing in it was almost impossible. The house moved so much that I was only trying to hug one side of the doorframe but it was moving away from me at almost arms length. To anyone who is experiencing earthquakes stay safe. I'm sure you won't get as many aftershocks as us. (10,000 + and still going) As for school - my school year finishes in 8 weeks. :D Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 8 weeks? You guys must be pretty over there at NZ. Most kids go back to school two or three days after Labour Day if I remember correctly. Quote
rachiee Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 I start on the 7th, two days after Labor Day. Unlike last year, I'm not going to get two days off right after school begins because Rosh Hashanah comes later on that month. (In my area, we have days off on the Jewish holidays.) Quote
Wembly Posted August 26, 2011 Posted August 26, 2011 We felt the earthquake here too. I just woke up and I thought I was titching involuntarily and making my bad shake but then I realized that it was shaking WAY to much to be the nerves in my leg so I got up and realized the whole house was shaking. You could see all the wire shaking outside and it opened one of our cabinets but that's about it. And now we're getting evacuated because of hurricane Irene, <_< Boarded up the windows and getting everything tied down now. So we got the official mandatory evacuation notice at 3:57 and apparently the mandatory evacuation started at 4:00 :laughingsmiley: :rolleyes_anim: Yeah right, like I'm going to be ready to leave in 3 minutes. We'll probably end up leaving in the morning. Quote
Spritzie Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 I live in a pretty safe area. Colorado isn't known for earthquakes. I guess Colorado generally gets 2-3 earthquakes a year. With where my city is located, we're too high to have many issues with flooding, and we're too close to the Rocky Mountains to get many tornadoes. (Except there's tornadoes like crazy if you go just a few miles east.) Quote
rachiee Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 It's unusual for an earthquake or a hurricane to happen in New York. However, we do get the remnants of hurricanes quite a bit and not actual hurricanes themselves. :P New York is probably known more for snow and ice storms than any other weather condition, especially lake-effect snow. I don't live in the part of the state that is affected by that, and I'm kinda glad I don't. I can't imagine what would happen if more than a foot and a half of snow were to fall. (It probably has happened here before, I just don't remember it) In other news, I finally got my schedule in the mail, but still no supply list. :sad01_anim: Quote
Spritzie Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 We don't even get the snow storms like we used to. I remember one year when I was younger, when we had several blizzards in a year. It had been years since we'd had one, until we had one last March. Since then, we haven't really gotten any big snow storms. Quote
rachiee Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 The last big snowstorm was sometime in January or February. If I remember correctly, the NYC metro area got 3 feet of snow in that month alone. Then, in February, we got a big ice storm. I went outside in it and pretty much everything was covered in a one-inch film of ice. Seeing the trees covered with ice was really pretty, but walking out on the ice was very unpleasant. To be honest, winter didn't actually end until April or something. The last time we got snow was on 4.1, but it wasn't enough to be recorded. And spring only lasted for a month and a half. :laughingsmiley: Now I want it to snow again, but that's not gonna happen for at least another two or three months so... :/ Quote
Spritzie Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 We didn't get snow until November last year, when the previous winter, we had snow by mid-October. But we had snow as far in as May. And we haven't had much of a normal summer. We've been having severe thunderstorms nearly every day. (With the temperature in the 90s, before and after.) Normally thunderstorms are a spring thing here. Quote
rachiee Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 This summer was abnormally hot, especially because of that heatwave last month. Weather-wise, this was probably one of my least favourite summers because of how hot and humid it was. There weren't any days (that I remember) where it was 80-85 degrees, partly cloudy and breezy, the way I like summer weather to be <_< Quote
Spritzie Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 It was hotter than normal here this year too. We beat records quite a few days. Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 I'm lucky that I don't get the actual hurricanes, and just the remains of them where I live. It'd be a Tropical Storm at worst when it gets to the vicinity of my area, but I expect no extreme damage. Hurricanes actually weaken when they get to colder waters to be honest. Quote
Naamah D. Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 Oh yeah! September 6th! New Heroes of Might and Magic! I even gave myself a new theme song. Now, let us sing the Inferno Cheer! "Go go Inferno! We rock everywhere from Earathia to the Conflux Go go Inferno! In the name of Urgash goes the overseer Equip your self with bastilla gear Get your spell books out We'll show you what the Inferno's all about GO GO INFERNO!" That wasn't my theme song, by the way. Just me nerding out. Quote
khaos Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 What Anxiously waiting for Add or Subtract 2011 to start so we can win AGAIN :woot: Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I never been to an Add or Subtract event before here at TDN, this could my first one. I'd like to try. ...and I'm still dreading over Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene, and hoping that the damage isn't brutal. Quote
:)Doc Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I guess it's good that I came back; I want to participate in the Add and Subtract... thingy. :D Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 Welcome back Doc. One more thing, I may or may not have power outages in my area due to Irene; if I do get said outages, I won't be on often. It stinks to live in/near the path of a hurricane or tropical storm. Quote
rachiee Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 I took a nap for about three hours during near the end of the storm, and when I woke up, it wasn't windy or rainy. o_O Oh well, at least it's (probably) safe to leave the house now. Quote
Tedhaun Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 ^ Glad you got your power back, Rach. Worst for me was 30 minutes in my area. No trees were downed in my area, but downed in some other cities near where I live. I'm also glad that Irene downgraded due to colder waters, and some folks in Northern New England won't be lucky.
