Divya Bean Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Sorry to go back in the convo but... Okay, that is way too few words. What kind of essays are that short? What were some of the subjects for those ones? I know! They were: What is your favorite science topic? AND How does science affect your everyday life? x_x Alright then, CAV. What have YOU done to save the world? I could do 150 words. But I've always been a very concise writer. I like words; I don't like to waste them where they're not needed. Some people are really good at using words effectively in longer writing, but I'm not one of them. If I try to use a lot of words, I just sound long-winded. I understand that. I actually like righting longer pieces because it is fun to chop them down. :laughingsmiley: Quote
Spritzie Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Sorry to go back in the convo but... I know! They were: What is your favorite science topic? AND How does science affect your everyday life? x_x Okay, I could see how the favorite science topic one could be that short. But the second one would have to be really shortened down. That seems like a topic for a much longer essay. Quote

That seems like a topic for a much longer essay. They were both rather difficult for me. I went into way too much detail for my favorite science topic (Genetics) and the same thing with the second one. Quote
Spritzie Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Well, with genetics, that makes sense. I'd have said meteorology. :D That's my favorite. Quote
Divya Bean Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I love meteorology, that is my second favorite! :laughingsmiley: Genetics was very difficult to describe in 150 words though. Medel's experiment just isnt that short! Quote
Spritzie Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I've always loved meteorology. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't go to school for it. It's really the only thing I've been passionate about my entire life. Quote
jumpingbeans Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 I've never much liked meteorology; it's always been astrology for me. Quote
Spritzie Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 It's always been fascinating to me. Plus, if I were to predict weather in CO for a job, if I was right, all the better, but if I was wrong, well, it's CO weather. It changes all the time with no warning. I always loved astronomy as well. Saturn was always my favorite planet. Quote

It's really the only thing I've been passionate about my entire life. I have a lot of passions. I have always found meteorology very interesting. I love learning about those kind of things, meteorology and a bunch of other ologies. :laughingsmiley: Quote
Spritzie Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 My interests have just gone all over the place. For years, I wanted to go to law school. I'd love to be a lawyer. But the number of school years that requires is scary. Quote
livvy Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Mmm, genetics! Fun! Definitely one of my favoured biology topics. It just makes so much sense! Meteorology is really nifty too, but we haven't really studied much about it. They just don't include it much in the curriculum. But Spritz, if you enjoy it, you should think about taking a couple classes on it. Oh yes, law school and medical school require a RIDICULOUS amount of schooling. I'm not so sure I'm looking forward to that. x_x Quote
Divya Bean Posted November 16, 2010 Posted November 16, 2010 Spritzie, I know what you mean! The number of years is the only thing holding me back from medicine. Livvy, that is what I love! Genetics is so structured. I want to work on the Human Genome Project where scientists are searching to see what each gene does (hair color, addictions, etc). Quote

I haven't thought about that in a while, but yeah, that'd be way cool! Quote

Some people oppose it because once it is figured out, scientists are this much closer to figuring out how to change the genes and therefore people will get to pick what they want their baby to be like. Designer babies. Quote

People's health is being entrusted to them. Spritzie, I know what you mean! The number of years is the only thing holding me back from medicine. Livvy, that is what I love! Genetics is so structured. That does sound really awesome Divya! Quote
CAV of Gang Green Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Alright then, CAV. What have YOU done to save the world? I recycle stuff.. :P I also do the very best I can everyday in everything I do. I ALSO spread my message and opinions throughout the world, and I fight against war, political corruption, and all unjust things. THAT is how I save the world, in my own way. Quote
:)Doc Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I've never much liked meteorology; it's always been astrology for me. I really really really like astrology. :D I like meteorology, just not as much :P Quote
Spritzie Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 See? The lesson here is... science is fun. Always. There will always be some kind someone will end up liking. Quote
CAV of Gang Green Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 DID SOMEBODY MENTION ASTROLOGY!?!??!??!?!?!?!?!??!?! *bursts through door exctitingly* So who mentioned astrology???? Quote
:)Doc Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Yes, although to who brought it up, I am unaware :P Quote
Unstream Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I'm afraid I believe astrology to be a load of bullcrap. Astronomy, on the other hand...:P *spazzes* Look at this prompt! 2. "The most important lesson you can learn while you are here [at Furman] is that for your life to have authentic meaning, fulfillment and consequence, you must learn the importance of connection to forces larger and greater than yourself: to larger causes and to the greater community." Rod Smolla, President, Furman University With this in mind, briefly describe a current issue or recent event in your state or community and how it will affect its citizens in the future? More importantly, how have you, as a leader, made a difference in regards to this issue? Maximum Allowed: 500 words. What the heck am I supposed to say about that? I'm a HIGH SCHOOL student, for goodness sake! I don't have time to go out and save the world! I'm busy trying to keep my own little world from imploding! What if it isn't an "I saved the world" essay but an "I influence my community in a positive way" essay? Or a "what I do makes a difference" essay? Quote
CAV of Gang Green Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 I'm afraid I believe astrology to be a load of bullcrap. Astronomy, on the other hand...:P Whoops. School has got me so out of whack that a difference I can tell right away is rather difficult for me to figure out. Stupid school. It's pushing all the astronomy out of my head, and filling it with worthless Latin. Now that I can, I absolutely agree. The study of astrology gets you nowhere closer to the answers of the universe. Quote
:)Doc Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 Wait. What's the difference between Astrology and Astronomy? :P Whichever is the study of the planets, outer space, and all that stuff is the one I meant x_x Quote
CAV of Gang Green Posted November 17, 2010 Posted November 17, 2010 The study of the planets and such is astronomy. Astrology usually centers around TRYING to predict the future using constellations, unsuccessfully of course. Horoscopes are made using these predictions. According to astrology, I'm a Libra. I read horoscopes for a month as a test to see if they were real. They aren't, as each prediction was wrong. I now have a new set. Quote
