  1. WEEK 2 UPDATE: They're definitely getting real feathers! Now it's mostly just the head and neck that are still yellow. Look at those cute tailfeathers! Also, I swear they must be almost twice as big as they were when we got them. We had to expand their box into a little chicken condo, and they'll need more space soon.

The lantern is a nightlight type thing so they have light on the far side of the box (the light from the heat lamp doesn't go that far). I don't know that they need it, but I think it's because my mom wants to be sure they can reach the food/water at night.

  2. The last two days I got cheap items so I went ahead and did it. I don't remember the exact events I got but both of them did nothing. Today it was expensive again so I declined. Hopefully I'll get something worth it eventually.

  3. Finally finished A Storm of Swords!

In addition to starting A Feast for Crows, I've got myself a copy of Finding Darwin's God. It's nonfiction, talking about how God and evolution can coexist. I already believe that, but I'm very interested to read the book. Hopefully it will give me better arguments when trying to present my case to people who believe the two are mutually exclusive.

  4. I know that feeling, and I've gotta say: Go finish your assignment! Let neopets be your reward, you get to play when you're finished. It can be hard to stay motivated through the entire semester, but those points are important. Don't let the hard work from earlier on be ruined by a moment of weakness now, so close to the end. You can do it! :)

  5. You don't have to keep the males separate unless you really want to or have religious reasons. Fertilized eggs are no different unless someone is brooding (sitting on them.) You also don't have to refrigerate fresh eggs as long as you roll them every day. That's how they were kept in the days before refrigeration.

Do you know what type of chicken they are? If they're broilers (not to be gross, I'm a vegetarian anyway) then they probably won't brood and might not lay well. I can't wait until next year when my little guy is bigger so we can try to start a new flock. Good luck, they look great, healthy and happy baby birds! :)

Oh good, so we don't have to separate them as long as we take the eggs out? That makes things a lot easier!

I don't know for certain what type of chickens they are, but someone has suggested that they may be leghorns. They appear to be growing white feathers, in any case.

  6. I've had a couple of chicks before--they're so fun! When they got big, my dad ate their eggs. I hope the weather is good where you're at! :)

I'm definitely looking forward to trying some fresh eggs! I've heard they're better than store-bought, and I like those plenty already. Maybe five to six more months and our girls will be ready to start laying. I think we'll have to keep any roosters separate, though, to avoid fertilizing the eggs. Not sure how we'll do that.

I'm in central Texas, so the weather is pretty reasonable most of the year. It gets hot in the summer, but the winters don't get very brutal. Many chickens can handle cold down to something like -20F, so that shouldn't be a problem. It gets hot in the summer here, though, so we'll have to have good ventilation in the coop to make sure they don't overheat. I've read tips like feeding them frozen watermelon and adding ice to their water, or having a mister if it's not already too humid. We'll figure that out in a few months when the time comes, I guess. Hopefully this year isn't like last year, where we had something like 100 days that were over 100 degrees. Not in a row, thankfully, but it's still way higher than the average. Winter was cold this year, so hopefully summer is cool as well.

Awww fluffy little babies! My parents had chickens for a while but I recall them saying it was a lot of work. Hopefully you have better luck!

It is a bit of work. Right now we're changing out the wood shavings twice a day, and changing their food and water daily. Also, when they're this young (it's a little gross, sorry) you actually have to check their butts for dried poop. It can block them up and then they'll die. They're doing good on that front, though, so far. I'm sure cleaning up after them will get harder as they get bigger, but right now it's not too bad.

  7. Awh, I'm sorry. :(

I used to dislike the Habitarium, too, but it IS a good way to earn np if you want to go the morphing potion route. You level up slower as you get farther in, because it requires more experience for each level, but you also get better np rewards per level increase. I'm told you can make tens of thousands (even 100,000) per day once you're at level 50, which is well worth it.

Just leave it running in the background while you're online (don't worry about leaving it going 24/7, I've heard rumors of people who do that getting "locked out" of their Habitariums), and you'll level up pretty quick. But don't forget to check in now and then to make sure the little guys don't need to rest, and to see how they're doing with resource gathering/egg laying. It's pretty low maintenance once you get a system going.

  8. I don't know that it matters what order you do it in, as far as reading the book or watching the movie first. I've done it both ways, and I can't say I like it better one way or the other.

I tend to look at the book and the movie almost as separate stories, though. Sometimes they're very close to each other. Silence of The Lambs was almost word-for-word the same as the book, for instance. A lot of times, though, the movie is an interpretation of the book, and not a literal retelling of the story. Wicked is a great example of this, although it's a play and not a movie. It's the same basic story, but it really is an interpretation of the book, made to be family friendly and more suited to musical numbers. It's not the book brought to life. If you go into it expecting it to be the same as the book, you'll be disappointed. But if you look at it as two separate things, you can enjoy them both.

    Although if I have to rant about one movie that I'll never get over: Avatar: The Last Airbender. Oh my goodness, to day it was "freely adapted" is a gross understatement. I wanted to hurl my popcorn at the screen three minutes in -___-;

I never saw that one, and from what I've heard about it I'm glad I didn't. Even just the trailer looked wrong, to me.

  9. I've been attempting to finish Moby puppyblew for over a year

Took me a minute to figure out what "Moby Puppyblew" was. Classic filter action, there. xD

In addition to (still) finishing A Storm of Swords (900 pages in!), I've started reading the collected short stories of Guy de Maupaussant. I'd read a few of his stories before and loved them, so I bought a whole book of his stuff. Finally getting around to it.

  10. First of all, congrats for getting not just one but two evil coconuts! :) So far I've been lucky enough to get one, but that was a long time ago.

If you can't find something in the shop wizard, always check the trading post and/or auctions. From my searches, it looks like the Golden Evil Coconut is worth about 150K, and the cheapest I can find for the Wailing Evil Coconut is 175K. So, in total you could make a cool 300K by selling them on the TP.

Whether you sell them or not is up to you. Think about if there's something you're saving for that you could put the np towards, or maybe you want to start collecting and put them in your album. You can also hold onto them in your SBD and sell later, but who knows what the price will do. Unless you really plan on collecting them I probably would just sell them, myself. But, like I said, it's up to you.

  11. I've taken a few classes online before, and I'd only recommend it if you're highly self-motivated. It's very easy to fall behind when you don't have a class to go to every week and are on your own to budget your time and get your studying done. I also wouldn't recommend it for math classes unless you're very confident in your math skills. I've found that math is just so much easier in lecture format than when reading through the book or slide presentations on your own, but maybe that's just me.

Overall, though, I think online classes are a good alternative. Especially when your schedule is too crazy to make it to class, or you have medical problems, or whatever other reason to not attend traditional classes.

  12. I think TNR is the best way to handle the growing feral cat population. They become an invasive species and can wreak havoc on the local wildlife, as has been mentioned, so curbing their growth is a good idea. I have a friend who would probably go so far as to propose to euthanize feral cats; he studies ecology and is very against them and what they do to the ecosystem. So, in comparison to that, TNR is much more humane.

Putting them in shelters isn't an option, in my mind, because they're wild animals and don't adapt well to house life. Besides that, being in a shelter long enough leads to being euthanized anyway. You're condemning them to a death sentence if you do that, when you could instead let them live a normal life and just not be able to reproduce.

  13. Been stuck for a few days now. I need 3x Box of Wheat Flakes and I'm too stingy to buy them. :P I bought 3 Stagnant Puddle of Water on the first day (got a great deal on the TP) and had nothing really happen, so I'm hesitant to spend that much again for nothing. Maybe if I can get a good deal, or if the price goes down to something more reasonable. Right now it's 20K, which is too much when I need three of them. I've decided not to ask for them, though, because other people are a lot lower on np than I am and could use the help more. Maybe I'll try to arrange a trade with someone.
