Today it got a colour change and is now Snow! The Petpet I've been zapping was changed into a Pile of Soot on its first zap and has since been a Blue Wheelie, a Faerie Ghoti, and then another Pile of Soot. Today it was zapped into a Jelly Slorg! After that, I have never (ever) gotten a species or color change. =__= Always a stat change. (Sigh.) I'm trying to zap pets for adoptables too. As for pet pet, I mostly get nothing or name change.
