  1. I'm sorry to hear about your grandma, but glad things are going well for your aunt. My aunt also had MS and it was difficult to watch her go through that. A lot of autoimmune diseases seem to pop up in my family; unfortunately many of these illnesses just happen and there's not much (if anything) anyone have done to prevent them. It sounds like you are close to your family, which I hope you can find comfort in. Even if it means you have to share in greater sadness when times get rough, you have seen the other side too - it feels really great when things start looking up. :) Wishing your grandma good luck in her treatments!

  2. Wow, I didn't know 1-player opponents could use abilities multiple times. :O I have both Lens Flare and Warlock's Rage abilities, so I usually only battle opponents that I can beat in a couple of rounds.

Also, what happens when both of the players use Lens Flare in the same turn? Is it completely random or does it has to do with the stats?

    Thanks :)

Every time I've used Lens Flare on the same turn as Jetsam Ace, it's given the advantage to me (he's frozen and my attack goes through). It doesn't appear to be random, and I'm not sure if it has to do with stats or not.

  3. I think a lot of the non-flash games are good! Things like solitaire, pyramids, cheat, neggsweeper, etc.

Time Tunnel (equivalent to the "real world" game Mastermind) is like kou-jong in that there's a time bonus, but running out of time doesn't lose you the game. :)

There's also a few things that are a longer commitment or aren't typical games, but still fun things to do:

    • Don't forget about dailies - some of them offer a bit of a challenge, such as the Negg Cave or Faerie Crossword.
    • Neoquest I and II - you can search for guides online. You go at your own pace and earn NP each time you level up, plus a trophy at the end!
    • Plushie Tycoon - again, lots of guides out there!
    • Contests - but if you love writing or art, or want to learn to code, these are a good option!
  4. It's been mentioned already, but I've also heard that the stock market used to be influenced by users purchasing stock, and that it doesn't work that way anymore to prevent abuse of the system.

The stock market is random in that you can't predict which stocks will go up and down and by how much, but it still has some consistency (for example, certain stocks like VPTS and KSON tend to stay high).

  5. It always sucks to forget to collect your interest, no matter how much or how little it is! It's definitely not the first time and won't be the last that someone deposits NP before collecting interest, though. :p

As for the negative neopoints, it seems you've already found that having 0 NP on hand doesn't protect you from those bad events in the dailies! However, don't forget that some of those dailies can also steal items, and you can prevent that by placing the items in your safety deposit box. When I was going for the apple bobbing "imposter" avatar, I only kept a couple impostor apples in my inventory.

Keeping your neopoints in the bank is still good for building interest and protecting your neopoints from random events like the tax beast, so it doesn't hurt to put them away!

  6. I'm also a book collector! I got a Kindle for Christmas last year but I'm still addicting to buying hard copies of books.

I guess I also collect quarters, but not in any serious manner. The Canadian Mint seems to release a lot of 'special edition' quarters, so any time I come across one in my change that isn't the typical caribou design, I just throw it in my quarter bag. It's very heavy and I use it as a bookend. :laughingsmiley: I also have a very tiny collection of different international currencies.

I collect beanie babies. Well not so much anymore, I'm ready to pack up my collection and store them somewhere because they are taking over my room. XD I used to have a little collection and then when other people found out everyone bought me beanie babies for every holiday and now I have so many I don't know what to do with them all. :weird:

I used to be a diehard Ty beanie baby collector! I probably have hundreds of them in boxes in my basement. I don't think any of the ones I have are very valuable, so I don't know what to do with them either. :p

  7. Like Nammah, I tend to first think of either food or music!

It's been fun to read all the ones about Canada. I'm Canadian but I'll up the ante: more specifically, I'm from Saskatchewan! ;)

So since I'm the first poster, I can't analyse anyone yet, but I'm from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What do you guys think of when you think of it? :)

I think of the movie "Rio", with the birds. :P Lots of bright colours, fun music, and dancing!

    I'm from West Virginia :3

Take me hoooome, country roooads... to the plaaaaace, I beloooooonnngggggg....!

As for me, I'm from New Orleans and I can pretty much confirm that all of your stereotypes are true but I'd like to hear them anyway.

I think of the "Battle of New Orleans" song by Johnny Horton hahaha. I also think of the cuisine - dishes like jambalaya and gumbo. I used to work at a hunting Lodge, and we had hunters come up from Louisiana. They were very loud, passionate about the LSU tigers, and forced me to eat head cheese. :laughingsmiley:

I wonder what people imagine when they think of the UK...lots of rain? ><

Rain was the first thing I thought of! But I also think about the accents and how they're so different but so distinct hahaha. And tea!

I'm from Portland, Oregon and we're awfully proud of our stereotypes, even though a lot of them are exaggerated. So I'm curious to hear what you guys think.

I don't know much about Oregon other than I've seen pictures and it looks so beautiful. :) Stereotypes about the people? I think of the show Portlandia, I guess. I'm pretty sure it's exaggerated though, LOL

  8. I really like that one of the prizes is a book! NC is taking forever though... :p

I fee like the 20,000 NP and a book are pretty significant prizes, but everything was awarded right when I opened the homepage today (as opposed to having to navigate to a specific prize page). What if I had left a side account logged in? Can people get in trouble for claiming this on a side?

  9. My bank account has reached the "Ultimate Riches" category but like other have said, I certainly don't feel rich. ;) I'm not even close to where I need to be to achieve all my goals, haha.

I never thought much about the value of items & investments, and it's hard to even guess the value. I have a few unbuyable items in my closet and safety deposit box but I doubt I'll ever sell them so I don't know if they really count. :p

  10. Are you a hoarder, or do you like to keep your Safety Deposit Box neat and tidy? If you like to hoard items, why?

I've never been a hoarder, first of all because I'm a neat freak, and secondly because people always talk about discarding items being beneficial for opening up server space for TNT (I've heard it speculated that this was the reason for the rubbish avatar and the events to get rid of junk items). But has TNT ever come out and said that this is the reason they run these events? Is discarding items actually helpful to them?

The reason I ask is that recent events like the Coincidence and Charity Corner have made me re-consider hoarding items. However, this seems to be counterintuitive if I want to be helpful re: server space. What to do?! :sad01_anim:

  11. Disclaimer: I can only speak for my experiences - I don't know what it's like in other countries!

(Really the only good thing I can think of are minimum wage.)

Actually, I feel like some of the most basic worker rights (minimum wage, safety, etc.) are now legislated by government and apply to everyone, not just unionized workers. So unions aren't needed as much in this regard anymore; their benefit comes in advocating for higher-than-minimum wage, overtime and shift differential pay, pensions, and other benefits. They will also advocate for you if you feel discriminated against. Of course, everyone is protected from discrimination by law, but I think unions provide a more direct/immediate benefit in this regard (issues are often resolved before they need to be taken to court).

I've never heard of anything like the stories you've told, but the unions that make the news here tend to be the ones that represent specific groups of people (public employees/government workers, healthcare workers, specialized professions, etc.)

Case #1 - There was a guy working who wasn't very good. He took a lot of vacation time (that wasn't allotted), made unnecessary expenses on the company card (no, you don't need to play golf or invite people to it. Especially since you didn't ask!), faked an injury to get time and money off and just wasn't a good worker. But because he was in a union, he couldn't be fired because of that.

Union workers can be fired, it just requires a lot of documentation, and I think sometimes managers don't think the documentation is worth the effort. I know 2 people that have been fired from unions - one was related to abuse of vacation/sick time, and another was related to coming in late and abusing allotted break time. Neither were good workers, but the grounds for termination was regular documentation and progressive discipline (verbal warning, written warning, suspension, regular meetings with the union) related to direct breaches of the collective agreement between the union and the employer. The union would protect someone from being fired for "just wasn't a good worker" - the union and the employer define together, objectively, what makes a good worker. If the employee doesn't follow this, they should be able to be fired, even if they are in the union.

    ---------------------------------

In my experience, the worst part about unions is that they generate complacency. Even if people are good workers, they aren't motivated to be great workers because all benefits/promotions are based on the number of hours you put in (seniority) as opposed to the quality of your work. Unions tend to benefit those who already have secure jobs, rather than new employees or young professionals looking to enter the workforce. This is probably because more experienced employees and less turnover is generally beneficial to companies, but in some of the unionized workplaces I've been in, I don't think this is necessarily the case. And, despite what I said in the previous paragraph, it is true that "bad" workers will push the limits of their rights and often abuse the system.

  12. I won an Ugly Bruno (TCG) from the Coincidence daily. According to TDN's page, there are others that can be won as well, but I think it's pretty rare, and there's also a risk of adverse events (pet loses stats or an item disappears from your inventory).

I got an idea of prices for mine by asking on the Neoboards, so you could always try that before buying. TCGs are hard to sell though, so some people might be willing to give you a pretty good deal even if there are only 1 or 2 of that item on the trading post!

  13. Thank you for posting those links! I was really worried, I tried reloading and clicking different links and all these different things and somehow it never took me back to that timer page! Your link took me there though. I don't know how I managed to mess that up! Not so disappointed anymore :)

No problem! I think the page with the timer is "hidden" once you navigate away from it after completing the quest - you can't get to it by clicking anything because the Adopt-A-Neopian button won't appear again until the next day. Hope that makes sense. It's kind of weird that they have it set up that way though; I totally get why it panicked you!

  14. Officially Stockholming right now. I stayed up late to see what today would bring and was a little bit... sad? disappointed? when nothing inflated. LOL. I wasn't looking to profit (if I snagged a pricy item I would have given it away or sold it cheap), but why did I even stay up so late?!?!

I wish there could be some kind of balance - it's not very exciting when things stay less than 100 NP. I think a little bit of competition is a good thing, but when things go unbuyable then I think it's ridiculous. I just feel like if something was going for >10k but <99k people would be a little more charitable towards those who are less well off. But I suppose that's not a guarantee.

I guess I'm tough to please. :laughingsmiley:

  15. I'm really disappointed, I have 7 of the adopt-a-neopet donations done, but it looks like I won't be getting the avvie because I missed days 1 and 2 and I can't do any more donations and not even a timer! -le sigh- Thanks tonsil surgery for making me lose yet another new avvie!

Are you sure you're on the right NP "side" of the event? There are two different URLs -

    One for donating toys: http://www.neopets.com/charitycorner/np.phtml

    One for adopt-a-neopian: http://www.neopets.com/charitycorner/adopt.phtml

If you completed today's adopt-a-neopian, there will be no adopt button on the first link, and the second link should show the timer.

The even runs until the 31st, so you still have 8 more days to complete another quest!

  16. I managed to snag the music box and arrow launcher for a combined total of about 150k; going to bed now and here's hoping the kebab deflates by the time I wake up. :(

3 items going UB in like 15 minutes is actually ridiculous. I'm not sure why TNT is even selecting items that aren't really "junk" in the first place; the music box & arrow launcher were probably undervalued before, but not commonly given out across the site AFAIK. Maybe there's a reason for it, but it seems weird. I guess my biggest issue, assuming the prize for completing 8 days is an avatar, is that it's looking like you'll have to spend almost 1 million NP to get it - maybe more if things continue the way they are. If this is the only shot at the avatar (assuming it'll "retire" after the event), it's a dent I'm probably wiling to put in my bank account (which has taken years to build, BTW! Goodbye, sweet neopoints :sad01_anim: ). But definitely not very fair for people who don't just have that kind of money. I suppose the easiest counter to that is "Life's not fair", and it's not, but still - uncool. At least with other expensive avatars, they're always available so you can save up for them. If this somehow becomes a daily with a more easily obtainable avatar I will rage, LOL.

Stayed up too late. Sorry. :p

Did the Strange Growling Box prices drop right before midnight? I checked at early evening and it was still UB. I'd like to know to see if I should wait to get the Wocky T-shirt

FYI, in case you didn't stay up, the t-shirt stayed pretty much UB until midnight. A few started popping up on the SSW for 99,999 but you had to be super fast to snag one.

  17. Did the Strange Growling Box prices drop right before midnight? I checked at early evening and it was still UB. I'd like to know to see if I should wait to get the Wocky T-shirt

I think I checked around 9 p.m. NST and it was still unbuyable. :( I'm not sure how late the prices usually drop, though.

I wonder if the end prize will affect the prices - if today is a book, some people might be willing to pay more of a premium???

    -----------------

Is there a guide anywhere that shows where the items are available from e.g. which dailies or battledome challengers (if any) give them out?
