"Indonesia? What the hell are you thinking?"

The man kept smiling. "You want to be free, right? This is where we go."

Something wasn't right about this man, but Sahetow couldn't figure out what it was. She decided to just stay quiet.

He continued, "So, little missy, what's your name?"

"Sahetow."

"Last name?"

"Why do you need to know?"

"It's part of the service. I need to record every passenger's name."

"But you just said you were escaping too. Why do you need my name?"

The man's eyes darkened. "You wanna tell me your last name, or do you want to be thrown to the sharks?"

Sahetow's uneasiness increased, so she quickly made up a fake name to keep the man off her back. "It's Sahetow Traipy. Happy now?"

He smiled. "Thank you, Sahetow, but I think you got your last name wrong. Try again."

"What are you talking about? Traipy is my last name..."

"I don't think so."

Great. Stuck on a boat with a man who treated her like a serial killer.

"I know who you are, Sahetow. You're Marissa's sister, aren't you?"

Leon frowned as he deactivated his connection with the phone network. Truth be told, he was a lot more worried about the police call than he had let on. Some elements of the radio chatter that was now passing between police units all over the city indicated that this was a much bigger case than a simple stolen boat. E-mails had already arrived in the inboxes of several high-ranking government officials, although he had seamlessly wiped them from existence shortly afterwards, and there was even evidence that a Philippino destroyer that had been on a training exercise several kilometres out to sea had been mobilised to hunt down the missing boat.

Suddenly, Leon realised what all the commotion was about. They're looking for something that was on the boat!

((I have no idea what the thing on the boat could be - Lena should probably find it though))

Asteros wasn't particularly hungry. Running very hard from someone whom you thought wanted to kill you, followed almost immediately by hiding behind a pile of boxes that couldn't be more than 50 cm tall and 20 cm wide, did that.

The police had come looking. There were only three of them, but he was scared. A voice that gave the impression it was coming from just over his shoulder, though it was actually coming from his own brain, said, "I warned you..."

He payed no attention to this.

It was cramped. One of them was coming over this way, and it had already been at least five minutes. He was starting to ache. He wished he could stretch out, and that the policemen were somewhere else. Maybe being cut into pieces themselves.

Suddenly the ominous, ringing footsteps stopped.

He looked around the corner. It was empty, so, with no hesitation for a further check, he wandered out.

Sahetow couldn't believe it. How could that man have known that she was Marissa's sister? Maybe, his grandfather or great grandfather told him about that tragedy when she drowned. But, wouldn't this man think that, after all these years, Sahetow would be dead by now? It was over a hundred years ago, for God's sakes. Was he immortal, too? Surely not. Sahetow didn't know what to say, but finally asked, "What do you know about Marissa?"

The man chuckled. "Only what my great-grandpappy told me. That there was something different with her. She didn't act like the people around her, but rather kept to herself in crowds. My father, grandfather, and great-grandfather couldn't figure out why."

Sahetow brought herself to ask, "Did you ever find her body in the ocean?"

He looked surprised. "Body? She didn't die in the ocean. She disappeared one day. Poof. Gone. Vanished into thin air. Didn't you know that?"

Nothing could have prepared her for that answer. She didn't drown. That accident never happened. The fisherman had lied to her. So what happened to Marissa? Surely she didn't run away.

Sahetow didn't want to think about it. She didn't want to believe that her sister turned out to be just like her parents: cowards, suicidal, stupid. Had she abandoned Sahetow as well as her parents? Was she truly alone in this world?

She certainly was now.

((If Sahetow is the 20th century immortal then she wouldn't know about the group because the Immortals haven't found the 20th century immortal yet. Just thought I'd throw that out there.))

Lena Looked over the horizon and saw the destroyer.

"Crap, they must be getting ready for a military exercise. I had better get out of the Celebes Sea. As soon as I enter Indonesian waters I should be a good distance away."

Easier said than done though, the Celebes sea is over 400 miles in diameter.

No-one jumped out at Asteros. He did not think this was odd; there was probably nothing in the collective human imagination that he would have found odd. He wandered onwards, back to the now-deserted harbor. ((It just occurred to me that the harbor not having anyone in it is somewhat convenient for Lena...))

In fact, the policemen weren't anywhere. In the places where the policemen that had been searching for Asteros had been were several neat and packaged sets of butcher's meat, just as Asteros had imagined them.

Asteros was getting hungry now. His friend seemed to be nowhere (his brain's other half was actually wondering what the @*#$ had just happened) and no-one had dropped any food or anything. He wondered, wistfully, when he would next get to eat,

Eventually he sat down on one of the piers and dangled his legs just above the water with complete disregard for safety from sharks or aggressive fish. He had never seen the ocean before, and thus mistakenly saw it as a very big bathtub, without the bubble soap.

Gradually, it started to rain. Asteros had, some weeks before, decided that the rain wasn't so bad compared to the shower, as the latter was much harder to get out of. He didn't understand how one kind made you catch your death of cold if you stood in it for too long while the other made you catch your death of cold unless you stood inside it for, in Asteros' opinion, far too long. He had accepted this, in the way he had accepted facts such as "there's no such thing as a chocolate-brick house" or "you can't eat mud", as an Adult Thing.

Still, he wished that the 'help' that his friend had mentioned was here.*

*((@Levy: this doesn't have to have an effect on Lena's current situation.))

(( :laughingsmiley: "you can't eat mud" - Asteros must have one versatile digestive system.))

Leon's fingers were racing back and forth faster than the human eye could track them. Within several seconds, he had cracked the Philippino military's radio encryption wide open, and was bombarding their systems with huge quantities of meaningless information. Half a minute later the communications ports simply overloaded, taking the military's entire computer network with them.

"Now that's what I call five-oh-threed." remarked Leon, fulfilling his obligatory lame joke quota for the hour.

((*buffs out scratches on desk* I'll admit Sahetow shouldn't have thought about that group. But she is assuming that there are other Immortals in the world. Post fixed.))

Despite Sahetow's shocked gaze, the man continued the conversation. "So, you look like you cared about Marissa. Tell me about yourself. Why are you here now?"

She didn't want to answer him, but the man insisted, so she merely said, "I want to leave the country. Too many painful memories."

The man shook his head. "Those memories of yours must be pretty old, eh?"

Sahetow tried to act like she didn't know what he was talking about. "What do you mean? I'm only 17..."

"Don't play that game with me..."

Trying to change the subject, Sahetow quickly asked, "So, if Marissa didn't drown, what happened to her?"

"Hmm...I heard she scurried off somewhere."

Sahetow sighed. Of course. Let's abandon your baby sister who has nothing left.

He continued, "Though I heard she was kidnapped. Can't really tell who's lying. I don't know, quite frankly."

She sat upright. "Kidnapped? By who? And to what place?"

The man wiped his brow in the heat of the sun. "You sure are inquisitive..."

Sahetow grabbed the man's shirt. "You must tell me!"

He stared at her calmly. "I only heard that her captor traveled to America to flee pursuit. Must have brought her with him. But what does that matter now? She's long dead, girl."

She let go and slumped onto the floor on the boat. Taken to America? Not drowned in the ocean? She couldn't find her sister alive and well there, but she could at least find out who kidnapped her and where they dragged her. She could relax her mind once she discovered Marissa's fate.

"Could you take me there?"

"What?"

"America. Could you take me there?"

The man looked at her in suspicion and confusion. "Why would you want to go all the way over there? Certainly can't travel there in this dingy boat."

"But I need to get there..."

"No can do, young lady. We're going to Indonesia for now. You can do whatever you want once we depart. So sit tight and enjoy the ride."

Sahetow sighed and stared out of the side of the boat.

Leon leaned back in his chair, massaging his useless legs to restore their blood circulation. There was really nothing much more he could do now but track Lena's boat on satellite and hope that the Philippino military had advanced far enough into the information age to become reliant on their computers for tracking targets.

Just as Leon was reaching for his cup of coffee, one of his speakers began to emit a quiet beeping noise. Woops, phone call, he thought, reluctantly withdrawing his hand and clicking the blinking 'pick up' button on his screen.

"Good morning Leon - it's a really early morning at that. It's not healthy to be up at midnight you know."

Glancing at the atomic clock he had built and installed on the opposite wall of his room, Leon chuckled. "Your clock is off Darwin - it won't be midnight for another 14 seconds."

"Whatever." replied the sleepy man on the other end of the encrypted line. Darwin was a CIA computer fraud specialist that had met Leon a decade earlier when investigating a mysterious hacker that had managed to compromise the entire American military computer network. Leon had helped him track down the offender in return for a few of the CIA's intelligence reports, and the two had been fast friends ever since. "Look, I was looking forward to actually having at least four hours of uninterrupted sleep tonight, but you just ruined that for me, so just keep your mouth shut for a few seconds and pay attention okay?"

"Go ahead, I'm listening."

"Okay, here's my question: What the heck were you thinking bringing down the entire Philippino national security network?!"

Leon raised an eyebrow, despite that fact that it would be impossible for Darwin to see the expression without a video link. "And you think it was me because?"

"Don't play dumb with me Leon - there's nobody else in the world who could have pulled off a stunt like that in less than a minute. I was watching the whole thing from Fraud HQ. One moment, all their nodes were working perfectly, thirty seconds later, poof! Do you have any idea just what was on the boat they were chasing?!"

"Nope." answered Leon truthfully. "But if I can get in contact with the friend of mine that happened to need a mode of transportation, I'll be able to find out pretty fast."

Darwin suddenly burst out laughing - over the telephone line it sounded like an elephant with a cold. "Well that's a huge relief - I was afraid that you knew something important that we didn't, but it seems you were just helping out one of your associates. I suppose I can't complain, considering the number of favours you've done for me."

"You've been just as helpful to me as well Darwin - and you know I'd contact you immediately if there was anything the CIA needed to know. With proper moderation of course."

"Well you can't go without moderation these days - let one word slip and the press will be all over it in a flash." Darwin let out a nostalgic sigh. "Well I'm going to get some rest - if you can find out what's on the boat, I'd be grateful if you dropped me an e-mail. Don't call though - I'm too old to be hanging around this late."

"I'll let you know." Leon said, closing the line. As long as I can actually manage to get in touch with Lena.

The boat finally reached the waters of Indonesia. Sahetow was expecting a mob of people to come and keep them from entering their country, but no one seemed to notice that they were there. She and the man climbed out and stepped onto the hard land. He looked at her with a hearty smile. "Well, I s'pose it's been a pleasure bein' with you. You do whatever you want, 'cause this is where we part ways. Have a nice life, Sahetow Cayn." He disappeared into the crowd.

Did he just say her last name? She never told him, did she? Sahetow tried to call out to him. "Wait! Mister! I need to ask you something!" He never broke out of the crowd to answer her. She couldn't even find his face anymore.

So, here she was in a foreign country with no way to get to America. Maybe someone else here could help her get there. None of the faces in the crowd looked too friendly, and they didn't seem like they would take time out of their busy schedule to tend to her needs. Sahetow looked around. There were people lined along the edges of buildings, just sitting there, looking miserable and unwashed. They must be homeless, she thought. Like me.

((Sahetow is going to be in Indonesia for quite a while. I'm not really planning on her actually going to the U.S.A.))

Lena locked the steering wheel and went below. It was going to bee a long ride.

Beneath the deck she noticed a large something covered by a plastic cover. She lifted the cover and saw what they were hiding. Thirty-five year old computers.

She turned them on and waited to see what they did.

As writing littered the screen her eyes widened.

She took a step back in disbelief.

She found a satellite phone and called one of the numbers Leon gave her.

Leon was just about to hit the refill button on his coffee dispenser when a call notification popped up again, this time from one of the special numbers he had passed to Lena. He quickly plugged in his headset and engaged the link. "Good evening Lena - what's up?"

"I need you to get me out of here! This boat is a terrorist boat! The computers I've found contain old Soviet Union nuclear weapon launch codes! And I don't want to test if I can remotely detonate something..." She frantically said in a quiet frenzy. "I don't know what else is on board... How do I destroy this stuff without setting something off?"

"Well that explains a lot." Leon glanced over at the satellite feed, which showed a number of Philippino coastguard speedboats racing up and down the shoreline in a frenzied search. "Okay - I can't help you much as far as getting out of there is concerned, although I'll probably be able to call in a favour or two. Now, the satellite phone you're using is a... Globalstar Globalstar GSP 2020. Look on the left side of the phone - there should be a small USB socket meant to be used for data transfers. Just find a corresponding hub on any of the computers, and I'll get rid of the data for you."

"The computer is over 35 years old, there is no USB port!" She said. She heard the boats in the distance, "I got to get out of here. I'll try to head for an Indonesian port town. There's an inflatable raft with a motor up top. How much time would I have to get off this thing?"

"I said a corresponding hub, not an exactly identical one - the Soviets were working on a USB-like technology long before it was released as a standardised technology. Just stick the port into any socket that looks roughly the same shape - as long as I have contact I can work.

"And you don't really have to worry about the boats at the moment." Leon added. "Communications are down, and I'm keeping it that way, so they essentially have no idea what they're looking for, or where to look for it - they have about as much chance of stopping you as a Windows system has of being even slightly secure. Don't stick around too long though, just sail off and look casual if you catch my drift."

"I could never understand your humor." She said unamused, then found an unusual port on the right side of the computer and attached the link. "There's still a chance there could be more on the boat I don't know about. I would rather get off if I can."

((I hope that doesn't mean she's not coming. XD

And Asteros doesn't have a versatile immune system, but he expected the mud to be something like chocolate, so it was.

Asteros is waiting. There's not much for him to do, right now...))

Asteros, the fear having ebbed away, was still not hungry. This was partially due to the (half a) large chocolate croissant that he held in his hand. Presently he took another bite out of it.

He was still sitting on the dock. He couldn't specifically remember what he was waiting for at the moment, but it was soothing. Looking out at the ocean, he thought, What a big bathtub. Imagine if I had the bubble soap right now...

"Just hang tight Lena." muttered Leon as he expertly manipulated a computer console with each hand - the one on the left was linked to the computer network aboard the boat, transferring the data aboard the numerous storage devices to Leon's databases. The computer on the right was hosting a video chat with a very sleepy, but obviously anxious Darwin.

"Thanks for the help Leon." said Darwin, nodding as he stifled a yawn. "Whoever you are on that boat, turn to bearing 067 and we'll have a couple of Apaches covering you - an Osprey will pick you up and take you wherever you want to go, no questions asked. Just don't poke your nose into anything."

The message came a bit too late. Lena had dropped the phone near the computer and gone up to the deck to inflate the raft. Ten minutes later she was on the water and heading to the nearest Indonesian island in the distance.

"Hmm... she doesn't seem to have gotten your message, but at least she's heading in the right direction." Leon reported while simultaneously wiping the residual data of all the computers on the boat and sending a copy to Darwin.

"Well let's hope the Apaches don't spook her too much then, eh?" joked Darwin, attempting to lighten the mood. "I'll have the crews try to make it very clear that they're friendly, although knowing the general character of your associates, I think that'll be a bit difficult."
