Customization layers/zones quantities

I want to customize my neopet with as many different layers/zones as possible. Is there a max of each zone/layer that can be put on a pet?

Example: Background, foreground, hand held, higher foreground etc. (plus any I'm not aware of)

As far as I know there's no limit other than just one item per layer?

As @jellysundae said, you usually can use one time per layer.

However, there are some items that occupy one or more layers. 
For example:

 

DTI is extremely useful in these situations because it has the items separated by layers on the customization window

I didn't know I could check the zones like that!! Thank you!! I love using foregrounds and background's together, so I always get really disappointed when one or the other disappears so that's really helpful!

DTI has a lot of functions. That's why I love it so much and can't customize without it anymore!
