deboratibi
A kid's website? Maybe that wasn't what they were going for; it sure doesn't sound like it, after all. I mean, just because something has (somewhat) cute graphics doesn't mean it was ever meant for children. I don't know, maybe it isn't. But if it's not meant for kids, there should be a disclaimer about these things.
Breaziecat
Yeah, I agree. I certainly didn't expect...that when I first went to check out the site.
nightfall8705
I do agree a lot that this isn't appropriate for kids. It's masochistic in the sense that the way the suffering is presented, it's just somewhat amusing because it is presented so horribly that it's almost comical... cartoonish if you will. I don't like that your pets can starve to death and die and be resurrected (even at the risk of having their graves robbed), and I don't like the gambling/obese/trash/decapitating fairy aspect either. It doesn't belong in a website clearly hoping to bank on curious kids, and if it isn't meant to attract kids, why is everything on the surface so cute and innocent looking? Yes, a disclaimer would be a good thing, however, as sad as it is, a lot of kids are damaged from parents who gamble or hurt them in other ways. It doesn't mean that should be exploited either. Yes, in real life, graves get robbed, people go to prison, people are fat and trashy and horrible, but kids go onto sites like this to escape things like this. Adults do this too, but kids are more susceptible to this kind of thing, in my opinion. All that being said, whenever I randomly adopt pets in order to zap them and hopefully give them a better chance of being permanently adopted, their little faces before they go back into the pound get to me. "Don't abandon me" and "Leave me to die" are the kinds of things that tug at my heart strings. Whenever my pets are sick or hungry or otherwise suffering, it makes me sad. It's not that they aren't real, it's the principle. It's called compassion, and more people in the world have less of it than they used to. True, Neopets don't die (as everything in life does) but in Marapets, it's almost like the suffering is expected. Hurting pets, either purposely or accidentally is NEVER a good thing. Even if said pet is digital. The principle concept still applies. That's something about Marapets that I've greatly come to dislike. Deboratibi said it best. The fairy should have a chance to recover and make a lesson of her struggle, instead of succumbing to the demonizing stigma that addicts are just losers anyway, who shouldn't have any hope to recover. Not appropriate anywhere, but especially a kid's site.
Duskitty
Neopets wasn't all that kid-friendly either back in the day, but at least they had the sense not to put in a drunk faerie, eugh.As for Icepets, it's even more of a blatant rip-off... they even have morphing potions and paint brushes, and I discovered these not 20 seconds into reading the front page:Yeah...And, uh, do some of the colours on Icepets remind anyone of the ones on Neopets? I know it's hard to come up with completely unique colours and things that no other virtual pet site has thought of before, but :I Edit: I rest my case. nightfall8705
brynchilla
It's important to remember that when Neopets was created, pet sites were in their peak. So there are going to be things that look the same. Take it as fanfiction, many of them have similar ideas but they have their own twist. lovedwallflower
Naamah D.
The reason I love Neopets is that it's a website that any age can enjoy. The Trashy Fairy and the fairy that decapitates pets are just over the top. In Marapets you can strap a pet into a guillotine!
brynchilla
Different people enjoy different things. Not enjoying a few aspects of the site doesn't make it a bad site. Avia loves Chias
lovedwallflower
How different is Marapets prison from the Cockroach Towers at the NeoLodge though? :p
010_pipsy_010
I vaguely remember when Marapets first launched. It was obvious then it was just a cheap copy of Neopets. I did sign up for both to compare and I soon left Marapets to join Neo full time and I've never looked back! :) Here is a neat little comparison between the two sites, (although I'm not sure how up-to-date this site is). http://www.kidzworld.com/article/18471-marapets-vs-neopets Happy reading :)
brynchilla
What I don't like about Marapets is the scoring system. You can only earn 1.5K from each game (each time you play), but for some reason the score doesn't stop there. It will say 'Congratulations! You earned 32,400 Points!' but in actuality you only earned the 1.5K. What's the point????
Venus0523
Not gonna lie, I played Marapets for a few years. I'd go there whenever I got bored with Neopets. The trashiness amused me :P I also liked that we had our own character we could customise and dress up, even if it was poorly drawn. You couldn't dress up pets though. Anyway, it's definitely not to be taken seriously, and as others have said, it's definitely not appropriate for kids. Not only was there the Decapitating Fairy, but there was also the Obesity Fairy, or something like that. There was also a drunk fairy (I can't remember her actual name). Pretty messed up. It seems to me that this site is trying to attract the adult NeoPets users with it raunchy content....Based on the adult responses here, they have missed the mark! Mumtup
Oh that's hilarious. I checked out their trades and they have a flea plushie that looks like a real flea. Eewwwww.
Finn the Human
Took a quick look through marapets. They have a nice 48 hour scam policy and seems they reply to tickets fast. At least they make it seem they care about their players.
Mumtup
I read that comparison and it said there are human characters you can dress up and change their hair....and take them to the plastic surgeon. LOL

LOL The plastic surgery could be compared to the lab ray, just without any fru fru words
Miranda_est92
I remember this site back in the day. (& now you cannot mention it on neo-board its a bad word) The graphics have gotten some what better than what they were. Now this was a really long time ago, but I do remember how they copied 5 neopets & they were not even close as in drawing, but the names were so similar & you could kinda tell what they were coping. All aside I am sticking with Neopets & always will. I am though in shock this site is still up.
nightfall8705
Wow, the replies on this thread have exploded in the last couple of days! I've been away cause I've had to work, but it's nice to come back and see all of the talk going on in this thread. On a final note from me though, Neo always has been and always will be the best! :)
