Creating a Pet's Name

Recommended Posts

So, after dozens of attempts I finally won a PDE auction :D (of course I was going for the cheaper ones that all the resellers wanted as well!)

At the moment, I'm going to hatch it on Dec. 3rd because that's my birthday and I thought that'd be a nice present to myself.

So right now I'm playing around with names because I want to find one I really like that's still available. I have a few in mind, but I still think I can find something better and am looking for some inspiration.

I know names are a tricky thing to discuss because everyone has a different idea of what they like and if it's not taken they keep it quiet so no one steals it. So outright suggestions are not necessary. I guess I'm just wondering what do you look for in a name that you create, what inspires you, what do you like in a name, etc.?

Congrats on winning the auction! :D I like names that are fantasy-ish. xD Nicely spelt and sound pretty when pronounced. :)

Congratulations on your find! Any thoughts on what color yet? :)

Anyways I'll just give you a little tidbit of what I personally do for creating names. Google is your best friend. I type in exotic names and then go to the 4th or 5th page and start looking there. (I figure people have already looked over the first couple of pages, but you can start there if you like!) After looking for awhile I end up with something nice. ^^ :) Best of luck!

EDIT: I was also lucky and was traded a marcatite lupe earlier today with the name Xaudea. I fell in love with it because it's similiar to my own name - Xandria.

DOUBLE EDIT: I also just created a pet on my side account named Vindixie. I see her eventually being on my main because I love the name. Her inspiration came from a childhood book called "Windixie" just changed one letter.

I do a lot of fantasy sounding names, with weird sounds that don't really exist in English. So if they are taken, I often add more vowels or double consonants, or replace letters with letter combinations like arma->arwh'ma

It sound the same, plus it looks more exotic sometimes too.

THIS.

This is how I named my Cybunny, (and a character in a book I'm writing), Nevaneh. I usually think of two or three letters for the beginning and play around with them in my head, adding other letters or changing them until I think of something I like.

Congrats on your lupe! I remember that book, but never read it personally.

I have a few different ideas, so I don't want to paint her until I really decide or else that'll end up costing me a lot. I'll probably just paint her red asap because pirate's become way too common for my liking.

I'll be trying the Google suggestion.

I agree, I do like names that are nicely spelt and sound pretty when pronounced. Nevaneh is really nice, and you've suggested is how I've been playing around with names so far.

When I created my royal girl ixi, I went looking at Latin names for flowers (came up with Acanthe - actually that may have been French - it listed both Latin and French names), because they often sound pretty and that would suit a royal girl.

But often I'll just chain pretty or cool sounding letter sequences together when thinking up names or pick something from literature.

I forgot to mention that when I find a name I like on google I usually play around with it. I find it easier to look through the names as some sort of inspiration though... I guess it just makes it easier having something to go off of.

& YES! I agree. It's funny how they've become the least expensive draik egg now.

I would have thought that they'd bring down the price of basic eggs much closer in price to the PDE than they have. Buying the basic PB doesn't even account for the price discrepancy.

I like to name pets after my favourite characters in novels such as my Kacheek, Sara Crewe, from A Little Princess. I like names that make sense, and I love it when pets have a first and last name so underscores are a must for me. Just my opinion though. *shrugs*

I created a side account today as I eventually want to move one of my pets, and obviously had to create a pet from scratch. I decided I'd create a gelert as recently I'd decided that I realllllly want a pirate gelert as my next (affordable) pet. So of course he/she had to have the perfect name! I started looking up latin names for words that I would associate with pirates or the sea, but everything I liked was taken. I ended up with Hwesta, which is the elvish word for 'breeze'. I know elvish isn't a real language, but I like the sound of it, it sounds kind of welsh. Of course, originally my pirate gelert was meant to be a boy, but I thought Hwesta was a girly name, so a tomboy pirate gelert I shall have!
