livvy Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Haha, that it is, Spritzie. :laughingsmiley: We don't even have an Algebra 4. The highest we have available is Algebra 3, and I skipped that to take Pre-Cal and then Calculus AB. I do so enjoy mathematics. Quote
Spritzie Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Those are the ones my sister took as well. But I enjoyed algebra too much to skip it. Quote
livvy Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I didn't really have much of a choice. The magnet program I'm in pretty much controls my schedule in regards to maths and sciences. Quote
Wembly Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Algebra 3 and 4, that's intense, we didn't have that either. But I agree with you there Livvy, my high school left me with practically no choices. One free elective a year was practically it. Quote
Meeptroid Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 It's always nice to see this board still going strong, haha. Quote
Sofa Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 59671 (2 with this one) is a lot of posts on one board, hooray for general chatting, even if it has been about maths! Quote
Wembly Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I always thought it was odd then people say 'maths' and not 'math' I guess that's just my vernacular though. Quote
Meeptroid Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I'm certain that 'maths' is the right way of saying it. Not that I ever do it, of course. :P Quote
Wembly Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Why would 'maths' the the right way to say it? The whole word spelled out is mathematics and words that end in s don't usually save the s as part of the abbreviation. Quote
rugrat0ne Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I guess because it's plural. More than one math, like arithmetic, algebra, etc. Who knows? It's a British thing. Quote
Unstream Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 Thanks Theo. But base switch? I'm not even quite sure what that is :eh: But yeah, "maths" is more of a British-English thing. Same reasons why they spell color like "colour" - it's just the way it is. I dunno, I think geometry was like a puzzle for me, and I had to reason with logic to figure out a proof or something. I think I'm one of those lucky guys that's both. The only reason that I'm doing better in Trig/Precalc is just because I'm actually doing homework (I lost probably about 40 points or so every MP last year in Geometry because I was too lazy to do homework). We actually don't have Algebra 3 or 4. There's Algebra 1 and 2, then Geometry, then Trig/Precalc. If you got ahead, then you can take Calc or Stats senior year. Quote
Spritzie Posted January 25, 2011 Posted January 25, 2011 I'm surprised that everyone is saying their school didn't offer Algebra 3, 4. I never thought anything of it. I'm glad my school offered it. Quote
-Ryan Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 What's Algebra 3, 4? Did anyone else see something about an SQL error when they came here earlier or did I just finally lose it? Oh btw, interesting story. I was in the school library earlier today with a bunch of friends and were being rather loud and annoying. Then the librarian walks over. Librarian: You guys are in here everyday just messing around. Now you all can either leave or TAKE A SEAT! Then my friend Gabe picks up a chair and says: You mean we can have these? Lol, I atleast found it funny. :P Quote
Tyler. Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I really dislike both algebra and geometry Quote
Spritzie Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 What's Algebra 3, 4? Did anyone else see something about an SQL error when they came here earlier or did I just finally lose it? Usually they number it, per semester. So the first year of Algebra is 1 and 2. And second year is 3,4. I had it too. I thought my network changed something because it happened right after an update at work. Quote
Ruto Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 That's confusing. :eh: Our school just numbers classes by year, like Band 1, Band 2, etc., starting with freshman year. Quote
-Ryan Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Oh, our school kinda does that with some classes. It's stuff like spanish and computers though. Quote
Ruto Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I never did figure out the college-course numbering system. History 1301? Where did that come from? D: Quote
-Ryan Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Maybe thats the total of people who could figure out what the heck the number was for? Quote
Unstream Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I never did figure out the college-course numbering system. History 1301? Where did that come from? D: I can see this now: Me: "Wait, why are we learning about WWII? I thought this was History 1301." Professor: "It is." Me: "Then stick to the year 1301!" Professor: *headdesk* Usually they number it, per semester. So the first year of Algebra is 1 and 2. And second year is 3,4. Oh, that makes sense. We have Algebra 1 and 2, but they're both year-long courses, so I guess our Algebra 1 was your Algebra 1 and 2, and our 2 was your 3 and 4. Quote
Ruto Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 I can't think of much that happened in the year 1301. That's probably the year everyone went on hiatus. Quote
Spritzie Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 My HS did everything by semester. Every semester was 1 credit. The only thing that went by quarters, was PE. Quote
Unstream Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Oh, you had block scheduling? Yeah, then we're different again :P Personally, I think I'd hate block scheduling. Quote
Spritzie Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 And our school had so many credits of certain things required. Like for English/Language, you were required to take 8 credits before you could graduate. So you had to take it all year, every year. 6 credits of math, so I took Algebra 1, 2, 3, 4 and Geometry 1, 2 Quote
Unstream Posted January 26, 2011 Posted January 26, 2011 Oh, maybe we're the same again. School systems must've just been different, because we need half the number of credits to graduate, but a credit is a whole year. I only need three math credits, but I'm going to get four anyway, just cause colleges like that. I do a lot of things just because a college would like it  Quote
