Neopets: then and now

I just gotta say, neopets was WAYYYYY better before. Me and my boyfriend always enjoyed putting on our fursuits and playing the card game, but nowadays everything just seems so bland. They should make it like it was before.

Nothing stays static in life. Things change and nothing can ever be like it was before.

Yes, there is a good part of people who will always miss the good old days of Neopets, before Viacom, blablabla. But there is a fair part of people who enjoy better Neopets as it is now. Wearables, NC Mall, Site Events...

In conclusion, it is impossible to please everyone and evolution (good and bad) is a normal thing.

There is more to do now - I stopped playing before because I got bored...now there is almost no chance of ever getting bored on neopets...between the dailies, the games, the plots and challenges, neoquest and being driven mad by Plushie Tycoon I could spend all day on here.

They thing I really do not like about the new neopets (which was the reason I quit for three years) is that they changed all the pets, I think that EVERYONE should of been able to choose wether they wanted to convert or not. And why don't they make old unconverted neopets available to those who do not want to have one of the new one? you should just choose

1)Old, beautiful design

2)Accessorize and dress your neopets.

Then everyone would be happy.

Also I think inflation is going out of control, at the rate things are going krawk trans potions will be 50mil soon, they really should make some things more available!!!

Other than that, I missed neopets and I am happy with it, there is also much more things to do now!

Really. I can't see why everyone's complaining.

In this current quarter period (September--present), we've had 4 freebies events, 1 plot, 2 site events (NGC and GMC), lots of new Customisation and battling items, 1 new site theme (from AoTA), a new world, 5 new avatars. . . the list goes on.

In this half period, we've had all of the listed above, the annual AC, new merchandise, about 2 more avatars than the 5 avatars in this quarter, updates to virtual worlds and flashy games (namely Petpet Park, KQ), another new virtual world on the way (World of Neopia), you know, there's been so much that I can hardly remember it all.

On top of all that, we've been able to send our games scores 10 times a day from mid-November-the end of the year.

Viacom had a rough start with Neo. Those first few years of Viacom's reign were hard. In 2009, Viacom have done what many thought was impossible -- have new plots, add a tonne of new items, partnered with Nick Virtual Worlds to bring us more stuff -- they're trying to keep us happy.

As V said, evolution is a part of life. Think of life as a Pokèmon game -- by evolution, you can make more moves and keep everything entertaining.

Personally, I like what Viacom has done with Neo.

As a side fact, I read in this topic that someone said inflation was annoying them. Think about it this way -- inflation isn't caused by Neopets... it's caused by us. In a way, it's kind of like global warming.

Well I agree with you we have a small part in inflation also but neopets is also responsible for example when they release a new avatar that needs said item (Bag of peanuts?? anyone??) the prices will go up madly!

And secondly they do not release some items enough in neopets to go with the demand so the prices will also go up madly (Draik egg/trans, krawk petpet/trans??)

I mean come on, how would it hurt them to release a little more items that everyone wants, not too much tough cause if they become too available it won't be as special to have them and then no one will want them (I really do no think krawk or draik would be as loved if they were available trough create-a-neopet) but please I mean there is limits too, there is something to be done.

So what? People are allowed to complain about what they don't like about Neopets, just because things change (and lot's of people hate change) or they add new things that some people think are good doesn't mean the site is wonderful and perfect and everyone has to love it. Blind devotion is ridiculous.

I agree with every word Lion said

Reasons I like it now

  • I love site events
I actually loved the plot. It was entertaining and it was fun to watch people fight over pixels :P
    Games are fun :P
We're getting more avvies with great artwork
the graphics are 356767328963863408640598850 times better
    the AC is awesome :P

And, as said, Viacom had a bad start, but it's getting better. One day, Viacom might make a neo that's even better than the "Golden Years" 2004-2005. Neo isn't worse because of NC and customization. Most of all, we have to realize nothing will ever stay the same, and if you hate the new neo, quit neo altogether, it's not like they're making you play

I can't say that I don't miss the old Neopets.. But not because it was a lot more fun, but more of the memories it brings back.. Honestly, if Neopets didn't change this radically with all the new additions, better graphics etc, I wouldn't have gotten back to it :P. I do like the idea of hitting a certain high score and winning magical plushies though! It was a wonderful incentive to camp the games :D. I do like the new idea of wearbles though! Finally, pets don't have to all look the same! Individuality ftw? Hopefully, Neopets would become less commercialised though.. Doubt that will happen; afterall, TNT is running quite a lucrative business!

I like some of the old stuff but at the same time, the rules had been a bit over-aggressive for a while. You couldn't even say 'Hugs' at one point.

Having been on neopets now for just around half my life (i know i know, rather sad) on and off, the only thing that I think has really changed about neopets is the people, and prices (correct me if i'm wrong: I started playing when i was 11 and may not have had the most experience with members back then!).

I mean, I remember when rainbow neggs were 40k, and it only took me 400k to get my lab ray. I dunno, maybe the rarity of the lab maps changed or something, but now everything is ridiculously priced! (this is where i get to members)

We've more or less turned neopets into a kind of capitalist society... There are the super super rich, the n00bs and then everyone in between sometimes. The rich neopians are the ones who get everything in the end, and its strange to become so greedy over a game.

This is just in my opinion, happy to hear yours :)

Hmm mixed bag The commercialization is a bit annoying but I'm glad people are enjoying the site. I also grow a bit nostalgic for the old looks of things and old games. Such is life.

There is a problem with your argument on Neopets being capitalist. Neopets is an equal world. Everyone starts off with the same opportunities and circumstances. There are no born poor or born rich or even poverty. There is always a free way to feed your pets, always a free way of gaining neopoints (called games), and an almost free way of starting a shop. If you want to be rich then there is nothing stopping you. It is sad that there are some who are poor and some who are super rich, but in reality it's the user's fault not Neopets society.

Also I think calling the rich neopians "greedy" is hypocrisy. Just because you don't get something yourself, does not make the person who did in the wrong.

I don't know. This topic is kind of hard to debate. I mean new improvements pretty much mean that something is getting better, but on the other hand, too much change isn't good.

Personally, I dislike the new layout. I grew up with the old layout and liked it just fine. I was okay with the side bar and the whole unorganized Pet Central. I loved it. I also loved how the Neopets looked at the time too. So many sites are competing with each other on how well they can do their site graphics, that it is sickening. Which is why we always have something new graphic-wise within the site. D:

I don't just dislike the site theme layout, but also how they made the pets. Each pet has a paw, wing, or hand sticking out into a fist and the other down. I'm not sure if anyone caught that. None of them have a special feature on them like the olden days. They are all the same and its because of the customization section; which I am also not a fan of. I think it's pointless... but then again... a smart way to make money for their site.

I do like, however, just the fact that shops and worlds seem real. I didn't like it at the beginning, but I've grown into it. I mean not everything they do is horrible, but again, improvements are always needed in my opinion.

I am thankful though, that they didn't take away guilds. Those are the love of my life. xDD

I mostly agree. I liked the old site, especially the bad graphics. It was nostalgic. And I definitely second the thoughts on customization. It does seem pretty pointless to me.

Plus, the bad graphics were nice because they loaded quickly! With all these fancy new graphics, my poor little computer has trouble handling them, and sometimes it doesn't work, which means I can't play the site! Personally, I think the graphics aren't worth the cost in efficiency of the site.

I'll tell you what I miss:

painted pets keeping their clothes on in the pound, some old looks of certain pets, original versions of most games that gave out more np's, posting ideas in the forums and instead of being reported for spamming actually have people like your ideas, the lack of any new items sold in toy stores so we could redeem the codes, more mcdonalds neopets.

NC mall is a waste in my opinion, spending real money for items you cant even sell for NP's. If you could sell them for NP's then I would be ok with it.

Well, no one's forcing you to use the NC Mall. I see a lot of people complaining about it, but I don't see how it existing is that much of a problem to anyone. It doesn't affect you if you don't use it, so why care? Lot's of people like the NC Mall including me. People are too greedy on Neopets with their NP. That's why a lot of people can't buy anything in the shops, everything goes for more in the user shops and the trading post. It's just like real life, the rich getting richer, and the poor getting poorer. It shouldn't take 100,000 NP+ to get one item of clothes. NC Mall is the way for everyone else to customize.

I don't even remember what Neopets was like 6+ years ago, so it doesn't really matter to me.

Alright, for me to answer this, I'd have to explain my neoets experience.

I joined WAYY BACK WHEN

basically 6 years ago. Which wasn't when neopets first came out, but it was before it became super popular. I enjoyed it, but obviously not that much since I played for a year or so, then left. The account was so old when I came back, TNT told me I couldn't get it back, it had been inactive for far too long. This was upsetting, but I ignored it and created a new one.

Left again for 3 years and then, finally came back recently :D

Neopets has a drastic improvement on their graphics ! I love it, I'm a bit sad I missed all the plots and events D: I can't get those avatars now D:

but, I know more will come out soon. I find it bogus and rude they made the NC mall, neopets was supposed to be a free haven for people who just needed to gt out of the real world. Now, anything good is either outragiously high priced, or you have to spend real money. No way am I going to spend my hard earned money on pixels, not until I'm extreamly rich at least XD

but, you really can't get bored. I've watched my days off go by, without even knowing it. Spent entire weekends on it, creating stories and pathetically trying to get avatars and neopoints... but, it's fun XD

I'm a senior in high school and I enjoy neopets more than i did in 6th grade, which in itself, is a bit sad, but I'm a shut in writer XD

no really I have friends I swear. Actually I get mad they put all the plots and stuff during the school year cause I can only log on daily for hours during the summer. But, I'm learning.

I think it's impossible to make everyone happy. So you just have to find joy in the little things, so no matter what, you don't become some angry person that says "I don't want to play neopets anymore cause i can't get what I want." sure, neopets has become far more commercialized, but money makes the world go round. And all that internet space they have to get in order to support the millions of users, it costs money. So you can't blame them for trying to find ways to support themselves and keep the basis of neopets free, ya know? so yeah, the things that cost moeny, have to be cooler than the things that don't, other wise people wouldn't pay to get it. Just accept it the way it is, embrace what you can get, and find ways to get what you want !!

P.S.-- sorry for the super long post o_O

I have been on Neopets for a long time now, 7 years in fact. So I can certainly see the argument that certain things used to be better in the past, but I believe it is wrong to say that Neopets was "WAY better before." Like others who have spoken before me I also dislike how commercial Neopets has become however in order for Neopets to remain a free sight it has to be, how else will Neopets be available for all the people who go on the site? I also dislike how all Neopets have the same generic pose now. Yet I also like how the ability to clothe your pets means that they can really look individualistic now, making my island Acara different from another island Acara. I also like the improved graphics and feel that they help make the world of Neopets appear more realistic, providing character. Yes things used to be quicker in the past but if Neopets suddenly reverted to how it was years ago I believe many people will be disappointed, there is so much to do on Neopets now, and new improvements means new pets and new worlds. I don't think things were way better before people could get a Magma Xweetok etc. The main problems people have, appear to be a result of the large number of people on Neopets (commercialism and adverts on Neopets and everything being so expensive) yet surely this is just a sign of Neopets being popular and loved by many.
