keithp
To learn another ability in the same tier, you must un-learn another first, to learn the other ability again you have to pay half of what is cost to learn originally. say what??? Lets say you have bandage, meditate, and shade in a tier. You pay to learn meditate. You cannot also learn bandage and shade. Now lets say you want to learn shade. You must un-learn meditate and pay to learn shade. If you want to know meditate, you get rid pf shade and must re-pay again half the price to learn it, instead of having it forever! Now in the old battledome, youd have shade and meditate as learned abilities and switch to use them at will. Now you must pay to switch abilities this is insane and I can see why people are saying they wish abilities had never been touched. whats next neopets becoming a mandatory pay to use site? xSummer
i totally agree. why change something good in the first place
Rebecca~
I wouldn't say they were changing something GOOD... most of the old abilities were completely useless, and you had to pay for the ones that did nothing before you could get the ones that actually were useful. The new system is definitely different. I'm still getting used to it, but I think I like it. I like not having to pay for abilities in tiers I don't want. I like the extra push to train my pet more. I think that it makes the BD more difficult that you can't have EVERY ability there is. You can have a maximum of 10 abilities- the same as everyone else, regardless of how rich they are. EDIT: Also, why the leap from this to a "mandatory pay to use site"? The new BD has absolutely nothing to do with NC aside from the Claws that give you wearables. :worried: Bubbleline, Lamppost, Mouseykins and 1 other
Lady Lyuba
I don't quite like not being able to have all the abilities, either, and it seems harder to obtain that it used to be. Now, your pet has to be over level 100 to achieve Burrow or Drain Life. But it's possible there are more useful abilities now. I'm planning on training one of the new free abilities, which one should I start with? Static Cling, or Drizzle?

There are definitely more useful abilities from what I've seen. :) And yeah, they are harder to obtain, mainly to encourage more people to be more active in the BD. Here is a good guide: http://www.neopets.com/~_mariokart_ Th Battlepedia also has a guide here: http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/articles/viewarticle/new-faerie-abilities Well, Drizzle is the most powerful of the three, with four water icons, but it only actiates on the round AFTER you use it, so if you're in a pinch it's not too useful. The other two are like normal, but less strong. I have Haliatosis (or however it is spelt), and it has two earth icons, but it lasts two rounds, so it ends up being four icons- just spread out. Because it is free, you can try them all out, I think, and see which one you like best. I like earth, personally. It doesn't seem to be blocked in one player very much. :) Lamppost and Mouseykins
Dragons
Well, you could just learn all the abilities and forget about the faerie bottles, but then it would be boring, so then TNT invented that you have to forget the old abilities if you want a new one. :)
lovedwallflower
I don't agree with the OP: the abilities were useless before and I like the way they are spread out and more useful now. Having said that, since I am relative newbie at battling, I have no idea which abiliy is the best in each row, so I guess I'm going to read guides and helpful TDN-ers' posts (:p) to point me to the right direction. All-in-all a job well done imo. Rebecca~ and kris10ly
coltom
Static Cling is the very best free ability, you get THREE attack icons of Light every turn. Think about that, some of us spend millions of np to up grade to a weapon that will do an extra 3 attack icons over our last weapon (just as I am considering upgrading to rainbow clockwork grundo from honey potion). I have also gotten BANDAGE and POSITIVE THINKING. Bandage is worthless for a mid to higher level pet but I was playing around and made a mistake. However, POSITIVE THINKING is an amazing ability for a mid to higher level pet. So my daughter's pet has 400+HP, on round one she get 22 hp returned, sometimes for the second round and even the third. This matches in usefulness most midrange healers. Edit It seems something has changed, and I have not got a multi-heal on positive thinking all day. Must have been a fixed glitch. I am now setting my sites on "Lens Flare" as the most useful and affordable item I should be able to obtain before the war starts without shelling out a large amount of points, lovedwallflower and Rebecca~
kris10ly
I like them! There were only 3 or so useful abilities in the past; as things are now, I'm holding off on buying faeries until they deflate a bit more but even the free abilities actually do things. I like that there's strategy involved, now - we're forced to weigh options and make sacrifices, and one player might choose a totally different set of abilities than another. It's much more interesting this way than the old way of just collecting everything until your pet was mindlessly superpowered into a clone of all the other mindlessly superpowered pets. I forsee this making 2-player battling a little more fun. Rebecca~ and Lamppost
Crystalline
Honestly, I kind of like it. As others have said, most of the past abilities were useless, and then the few good ones were at the last tier. Frankly, the current ability system reminds me of the talent point system that are common to so many RPGs these days. It gives you incentives to level up and customize and think about your choices. Now if only training up to those levels didn't take so long! (Reducing the cost of training couldn't hurt either :P)

Pojman
The other thing with the abilities is that you can use up to 8 each battle. Before after burrow and sink, you were done. Prices would be even worse if they did not release them in the BD. The regular stone have gone up, but the red have dropped like a "rock" That is what convinced me to training properly. I just needed to get my level to 250 so I could train with reds, which are a lot cheaper than regular. I will wait until after the plot to buy my regular codestones back and restart training. Codestones, dubloons, and the new faeries are all being released. The other thing with the abilities is that you can use up to 8 each battle. Before after burrow and sink, you were done. coltom
... Once you get the Ninja school you can't go back to the regular training school. Once you get your level to 250 you can only use the red codestones from there on out. I studied risk benefit before spending January "dashing" up to level 250. Scratchcards every day, buying the Quest fortune cookies (ah, the first $10 I ever spent here), and getting eight codestones a day. I studied the longterm price of codestones over at a place that has that information, and in the last number of years has spending eight regular codestones been on average less expensive than a single Mag Codestone, PLUS, you go from training daily to once every four hours. Historically, given you can cancel with a time penality the more expensive Red Codestones, then it is just an easy decision.

I'm not saying it's the wrong decision (I myself am trying to get up to level 250 as soon as possible), but the way the post was worded made it sound as if they wanted to be able to use the red codestones for the duration of the plot, and then go back to the regular ones once they deflate again. I just wanted to make sure they knew that wasn't possible. Lamppost

But I have seen the new Faerie Abilities guide on the TDN Battlepedia. I also got that message. The TDN Forums included the period at the end of the sentence in the link. Try this one: http://www.neopets.com/~_mariokart_ The information should be pretty similar to the Battlepedia guide, since we worked together. Balance
I will point out that we were never able to have all the abilities we had bought equipped at once. The fact that we have to choose a subset of abilities is not a change. The differences are that (1) most of the abilities at least work now, and (2) we have to expend resources to swap them. Essentially, it's like spending in-game currency to respec, which is fairly common in other games. I consider it a fair trade. neojbc
As an veteran player, I'd like to say that I really like these abilities. It entirely changes the way that they game is played. There still are some useless ones, but then you don't have to buy them! And, abilities are still in beta, so who knows what could happen next. Also, I wouldn't recommend getting too many abilities now with the prices of faeries. I just got Lens Flare and An Icicle and stopped there. Prices should drop heavily after the war. Ditto on the "don't have to buy useless ones"--remember that with the OLD faeries, you WERE required to get the useless abilities :P Prices should drop heavily after the war...buuut it's still *somewhat* worth it to buy them now. The price of freezers is up up up, so I managed to sell mine for a hefty profit and use that profit to buy Lens Flare and Warlock's Rage. It's basically like having TWO freezers now, but for a small fraction of the price.
