Funny how much difference ten years makes

I don't know if it was that well-known, but for a while in the early 2000s, Neopets had it's own official magazine. I found my copy of the first issue that was produced, and it has an article about the top ten most talked about items on the site, along with the approximate prices. I couldn't believe some of them. Here's a couple:

Thyora's Tear - 10M

Faerie Paint Brush - 185-200K

Darigan Paint Brush - 750-800K

The Darigan Paint Brush hasn't increased all that much, but man oh man, the Faerie Paint Brush and Thyora's Tear have skyrocketed in the past ten years.

Just thought some people might be interesting in this.

I agree. It's too bad that there wasn't a way to keep the old poses while still being able to allow customization.

I still weep at how much personality most of the Faerie and Grey pets lost in their conversions. It's partially one of the reasons I decided that my Aisha looked better painted Darigan, though I miss the better-than-thou glare the old one had.

That's very interesting actually! I didn't know that Neopets even had a magazine back in the day.

Yep, they did. It was in publication for about four years; the last issue came out in late 2007 if I recall correctly.

I own six issues and although some of the articles are outdated (like the one the OP mentioned), I still like looking at those back issues from time to time. Mostly because it's amazing to see how much has changed between then and now.

Yeah I remember buying both a Desert and Halloween PB for a total of 500k. But it was harder to make np back then. No KQ, no Habitarium, no BD dumping codestones on you. It's like when minimum wage rises, so do average prices of things.

I remember them! They were sold at local small shops and magazines stalls under the magazine publisher known as "Beckett". I had known Beckett because I used to LOVE their old unofficial Pokemon magazines, which provided all of the latest Pokemon stuff. (They also had a Digimon one). But I think they later got sued by Nintendo for selling unofficial magazines under the Pokemon name (even though it stated clearly that it was UNOFFICIAL.) With Neopets, they were actually the OFFICIAL Neopet's magazine; so I thought that was cool that they got the chance to official endorse something.

I can't believe that it had stopped only in 2007! It only seems so recently that I had seen the Neopet merchandise EVERYWHERE. I remember seeing the little virtual Tamagotchi-like pets in Toys-R-Us, I recall seeing the Trading Cards being sold, and I remember being 14 (I'm 23 now), and going to McDonalds to collect the plushies! They had good qualitie minature happy meal Neopet plushies. My sister purchased a lot of their toys. She still has a stuffed Babaa Petpet, and the Tamagotchi Kougra.

I remember playing on Neopets back when the games room was some kind of games cabinet, but I don't remember much about the items and prices. I remember the friend who introduced me made a huge fuss about getting a petpet from the kitchen quests or something.

That's kind of interesting to read, though. I don't know if I could be making 10k+ off of games so easily, though - there were few to no click 'n' pay games like Fashion Fever or Catch the Petpet.

Been playing Neopets for more than 10 years now. Probably my biggest regret was having my pet converted. I only had one pet before (for some strange reason, my younger self couldn't really fathom the thought of maintaining more than one pet LOL). Back when they introduced the customization part, curiosity got the better of me, and I ended up converting my dear old pet.

What I do like about Neopets now is that it's a lot easier earning NP and getting items... that's the thing that I struggled most back when I just started out playing Neopets more than a decade ago :P

Lose their personality? I don't think so. Before we all had the exact same un-customizable pets that only had different backgrounds, now we have TONS of items to make our neopets whom ever we want! My Trecci is a tough chick with a softer side, that's why she always carries her doll around, and DrMayo is sort of a good guy (girl) with an evil mind XD

Haha I have a few issues of the magazine in the top shelf of my closet. x) Not gonna lie it is really nice to flip through them once in a while. The nostalgia! One of the issues has pages on the new "mystery pet release" which was the yurble lol.

I will always be pro-un...convertedness? I totally agree that the high end colors (faerie, royal, darigan, grey, etc.) lost some REALLY great art because of conversion. I can't even look at a converted maraquan krawk without getting agitated. xC Plus even IRL I think putting clothes on pets is pretty creepy lol. I love having backgrounds and trinkets but the default poses of some of the pets are just god awful.

It's also annoying because quadruped pets can't hold clothing like swords and staves. They just stay stuck in the ground, and it looks silly. They could at least tilt the item in a way that the pet could hold them in their mouths or something.

I plan on painting my Eyrie Pirate at some point, and I hate that he won't be able to hold a sword.

Faerie Paint Brushes used to be sold in the Hidden Tower for 200k. I bought two back in the day. I painted my other two pets Desert when that was about the newest and coolest color. I used to think I was pretty well-off. Maybe I kinda was. *nostalgia*

It really is quite a shock to see how far neopets has come and changed. I remember my very first account. I remember having only 100k in my account and considered it to be a lot. I remember the yellow layout that was to the left. I also remember when the new layout came out and there was huge uproar and everyone HATED it there were seriously like 100s of topics about it all over the neoboards complaining about it. I remember when there were no premium memberships and no NC mall. I remember the old graphics, the 'worlds' before they were redone.

I could go on. While i miss the old neopets, i also like the new neopets. Don't get me wrong, there are some things im not a fan of. I'm not a fan of of customization(clothes) for the pets and i don't like the NC mall much. However viewing it from a corporate standpoint i can certainly see why they would add this stuff to profit more money. I think if it had stayed the same then it wouldn't have gained as many members as it does today as it would have aged it self. Everything is changing around us and if neopets had stayed the same it would have died.
