Future of tablets?

I know there are many technology geeks here. So let's the debate begins. The question of today is

"What do you guys think about the future of tablets?"

- Will tablets evolve to an innovative stage & replace laptops?

- Will people get tired of tablets after several years (like ultrabook)

- Will Ipad still be a leader after several years?

- Will tablet's price be dropped down so cheap to $30 - $50?

- "Create your own plot for tablets here"

I don't think tablets will replace laptops because tablets can seem complicated for some people.

People will get tired of tablets, they aren't that great. Cool, but not great.

I pad might be the leader but it will lose popularity to Galaxy and Windows might come in too.

Tablets prices will not drop because the materials like metal are becoming more scarce.

A lot of boards for a day lol.

I highly doubt tablets will replace laptops. Laptops might keep getting smaller and more tablet-sized, but touch-screens will never replace the sheer convenience of keyboards. Touch screens are just far too finicky.

I also doubt people will tire of tablets. We didn't exactly get tired of portable music players - I don't see why we'd get tired of ultraportable computing systems.

Probably? Apple are still innovators, even without Steve Jobs. They're very good at the whole "make everything newer and shinier" deal. I doubt they'll fall in popularity any time soon either.

And no, tablets will probably never be that cheap. Graphing calculators are still nearly $100, and tablets can do a lot more than they can. So it's not likely they'll get a heckuva lot cheaper.

Definitely agree here - the keyboard thing is a major player. You can get keyboards for tablets, but then they're pretty much just like a laptop anyway lol

I don't pay much attention to these types of trends though, so I can't say I'll know who will be the industry leader in a few years or how much tablets will cost or whatever.

I don't think tablets will go away anytime soon. They used to strike me as more of a "complement" to computers, but as we can run more and more programs on them, maybe people will start using laptops less. Can't see it happening for a really long time, though - as long as everything is marketed like an interconnected system (e.g. iPhone/iPad/Mac & iCloud), companies will be able to make more money by selling more devices rather than making one device obsolete. It wouldn't really work to their advantage. :P

I feel like everyone is going to catch up with apple soon. Which will be great, they will have to lower their price to match their rivals. The reason a lot of people I know buy apple products are because they don't lag and freeze 24/7. Which is also because Apple designs the software and builds the product so they're in control over the whole process. Google on the other hand has a good software (android) that a lof of different companies use. However the cheaper companies sacrifice stuff that makes the final product lacking and gives a bad reputation to android. I just hope they'll catch up with Apple and can push the prices down by a few 100 within the upcoming years. :)

Tablets don't have the computing power that normal laptops to, and they can't for the size and portability that they offer. Also, with tablets, unless you jailbreak one, you can't have standard software on it like Microsoft Office, or Adobe Photoshop or even Adobe Flash - which would make it impossible to play neopets xDD. The fact of the matter is, if your running between class and taking note or playing games, a tablet is a wonderful, portable device. But if you need it to do any more than that, you're sort of stuck. A lot of tablets are now marketing as one of those "transition" equipment, as in you do your work on your tablet and "sync" it up with your laptop/desktop - and I think that is a pretty ingenuis way of looking at this technology.

I do think that in the way way way way way future, we may incorporate touchscreen technology with the heft of a 500+ HDD/6+ RAM laptop but I'm sure there will always be a market for nontouchscreen things. I mean, I still know tons of people in Seattle that don't own cell phones, let alone smartphones.

Not only that, but I freaking HATE the app market.

On that note, I personally own a cell phone that is over 6 years old. It calls people, sends texts, has a physical keyboard, and can't access the internet. I'd love a new phone, but I'd have to find one with those same super limited capabilities because that's all I really need a phone for. I could never buy a phone with a touch screen keyboard. They're just too finicky and too easy to break. (A single crack can completely screw the touch receptors.) So yeah, I agree that there will always be a market for physical keyboards. If I'm that particular about my phone keyboard, even more people will be particular about their computer keyboard.

I don't think tablets will ever replace laptops because laptops have great keyboards. I do think tablets are here to stay. Everyone loves them! i also think the price will drop. Just look at the first generation ipod nano price. It's 20 dollars! Also, Apple is great with marketing so yea, I think the ipad will be the more high end tablet.

Agree with elbandito.

Based on my personal experience, you can't use a tablet for actual computer work. I can only use it comfortably when I'm sitting back in a couch. They'll probably still be used as more versatile versions of clipboards, business people love it.

So tablets won't replace computers, they'll co-exist because people need the variety.
