CAV of Gang Green Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I ate dinner at a normal pace, since I have nothing to do. Quote
antiaircraft Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I'm partway through cooking my lunch. xD And I only just got a new laptop (a netbook) which actually has a working battery and is thus portable - so I'm happy. :D Quote
livvy Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 My present battery lives for about... 45 minutes? I'm going to need a new battery or new laptop before I go off to college. This one is useless without a cord. Quote
CAV of Gang Green Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I've kept it charging for so many times to the point that it destroyed the battery. Instead of running for 90 minutes, it runs 20. Quote
antiaircraft Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 My old laptop's battery degraded to the point where it lasted about ten minutes, then somehow started messing with the power supply so the thing wouldn't boot at all. I removed the battery and started using it as a paperweight. Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Great idea! I never would of thought of using a laptop as a paper weight! Quote
antiaircraft Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Eheh, I think I should clarify that statement: I kept the laptop (it worked fine with the battery removed) and used the battery as a paperweight. xD Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Oh... Here I was thinking you were using a laptop. Quote
Unstream Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I don't see the purpose of paperweights (I'm not even entirely sure what they are!) :P My Macbook apparently has 10 hours of battery, but that's only if you leave it on and do nothing on it. It'll usually last for over 6 hrs or so (really depends on what you're doing). Apparently using up and recharging your battery at least once a month is good for your laptop. But that might only be for lithium batteries. Quote
antiaircraft Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Yes, that's correct. Most large lithium-ion batteries (like the ones used in laptops) have fuel gauges that are used to monitor how much juice is left in the battery. As you charge and discharge the battery constantly, this fuel gauge gradually slews off until it becomes very inaccurate, so it'll probably indicate that the battery has less power than it actually does. Emptying the battery and charging it up fully resets the gauge. And a paperweight is something you use to hold down paper. It mitigates the problems caused by fans and air conditioning. Oh... Here I was thinking you were using a laptop. Well to be honest, I do use laptops (and various other electronic devices) as paperweights plenty often. I'll use pretty much anything as a paperweight if I need to. xD But laptop batteries do a pretty good job. Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Oh, look, a cat. Come here, kitty, and you can be my new paperweight. Right now, I'm using a bag of erasers, pencil sharpeners etc. as a paperweight. Quote
Revenge Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Yeah, my laptop lasts for about five hours when not plugged in, but since I always use it for more than that, I just keep it plugged in all the time. My dad does the same with his laptop, except that one only lasts two hours. I often use my laptop to flatten my magazines when I'm not reading them. That way they don't automatically open to a page I spent a long time reading, and are generally neater this way. :D Quote
Divya Bean Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I do that too, Revenge. I actually dont travel too much with my laptop, so it just stays on my desk plugged in. The battery lasts for roughly 3 hours which isnt too bad... Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I feel so jealous. I don't even have a laptop. :( Quote
̊ ˉˉ ̊ Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 All this talk about working laptops, I'm glad I was finally able to get rid of mine. It lived far past its expiration date. Much happier with a working desktop! Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I didn't know laptops had expiration dates!:laughingsmiley: I've always used a desktop. Quote
Noog Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I'm pretty sure that was a figurative phrase. Well, all computers will stop working EVENTUALLY, but I don't think they have expiration dates. Quote
̊ ˉˉ ̊ Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 There wasn't an actual expiration date, but it was in horrible shape. The battery was long dead when I got it. Then the back light on the screen died, then it's fan died. So I took it apart, and used an external monitor, keyboard, & mouse. I took out all the parts that I didn't need, & had a regular house fan blowing over it to cool it off. I used it like that for a few months :tired: Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I know... It would be funny though... "go use that computer" "but it's expired!" Quote
Revenge Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I think it would go more like this. "Go use that computer!" "...And what?" "..." "You're weird." "...I know." "I can't believe you're my boss." "You won't tell the other guys about this, will you?" Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 No, a correct conversation is: Boss: Use that computer Worker:Sir Yes Sir! Quote
Revenge Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 And then he sits there for hours because he was never told what exactly he was supposed to be using the computer for, as one has many different functions. Get it? Quote
jumpingbeans Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Yeah, I get it. But then, when he's about to do something on it, he realizes it's past it's expiration date. Quote
Theresa2 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 my septdauter whants a laptop now I dont know if ill get once since i see they have to manny problems Quote
Spritzie Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 I think it depends a lot. My husband has a fairly new Hewlitt Packard laptop, but he abuses it, and it's finally died. I'm using my dad's old work laptop. It's a Compaq and it's so old, it came out with Windows 2000. I don't have any issues. Sometimes, it's a little slow, and can't run fancy games, but it works well. But my dad took great care of it, and I do the same. Quote
