livvy
Oh, that must have been interesting. I wonder what Alaskans get school canceled for. Additionally, why doesn't canceled need to ls? It should!
Spritzie
Probably nothing. They're used to having to cross-country ski/snow shoe 20 miles to school, up-hill, in 6 feet of snow, carrying a trombone, tuba, and baritone. Or was that my dad's version of going to school on snowy days??? :laughingsmiley: And I have no idea. Chrome tells me both canceled and cancelled is right.
Aidensmomma
I always heard, we used to walk uphill both ways, carrying my sister, we spilt a bologna sanwich, barefooted.
Spritzie
I always heard, we used to walk uphill both ways, carrying my sister, we spilt a bologna sanwich, barefooted. My dad would pretty much say what I typed (not including the snow shoeing/skiing, as he grew up in Colorado) Including the snow, instruments (He played all 3) etc. Then his dad would be like, "Yeah, that walk across the street was tough." :laughingsmiley: His family lived across the street from the school. livvy
Haha, Spritzie. See, I never thought I would actually hear the "three feet of snow uphill both ways" story, but one day a few years ago, I DID. I was talking to my grandfather about why I don't like riding buses to school, and he said "When I was young, we didn't have school buses. We had to walk, carrying our lunch in little pails. There were snow drifts above my knees, and my shoes weren't too warm. Then the schoolhouse was heated by a coal stove..." Well, you get the idea. :rolleyes_anim:
jumpingbeans
Aren't we so lucky to live in a time where you can get to school in the freezing snow, or the pouring rain, and barely get affected by the temperature. ...Of course, in a few years(maybe fifty?) there will not be any school. You'll just program your brain what you want to learn, and then play video games the rest of the day :)
Spritzie
:laughingsmiley: Ironically, I just talked to my mom. My dad is in Alaska right now, for work. He called my mom last night, and told her he went on a hike where he was slipping and sliding all over glaciers for 8 miles. It made me think of this conversation. My grandma told stories like that. So did my grandpa. Where as my dad did it, just to be funny. And I guess we have tons of flash flood warnings right now. I called my husband and he headed outside, I could hear the thunder over the phone. And it's lightning like crazy. <_< Have I mentioned I hate rain? Aidensmomma
I'm not sure if we're having flash floods warnings, but it all of a sudden POURED for like an hour. Thought I was going to have to put my son on my shoulders and swim to the door.
Spritzie
I love driving in rain. I do not like being out in it. And I get off work in an hour. So it had better stop by then. I don't feel like getting wet.
livvy
You have. You've also mentioned that you hate anything cold and wet except cold drinks on hot days. That actually sounds rather unpleasant, Beans. As horrible as school is, I think one of the biggest things you learn there is how to learn, and it's a really important skill to have. Besides, what else would you do with your childhood? Having fun all the time would get pretty boring.
Spritzie
Exactly! Cold drinks are acceptable. That's it. It's allowed to rain all it wants.... once I get home for the night. And I have stop by my mom's after work.
livvy
I love rain, as long as it's the good, heavy, satisfying kind of rain. I hate wimpy rain that produces enough humidity to make my hair frizz and not enough water to make it stay flat. <_< If it's a good rain, I'll run around in it like a little kid. :laughingsmiley: (Even though it does turn my yard into a swamp.) Spritzie
I loved rain when I was little. I remember running around in the driveway with an umbrella, not caring at all if I got soaked. It was awesome.
Divya Bean
Whenever it rains enough, I dance in the rain. It is so fun! I love getting wet from the rain. :laughingsmiley:
Spritzie
I get cold too easily. Even if it's warm out, the rain makes me cold.
Divya Bean
That is true. I love WARM rain. :laughingsmiley: I hate it when it is windy and raining. Then it is freezing!
Spritzie
It's almost always windy here. The last time I got caught in the rain at work, it was so windy, my jeans were soaked way past my knees. And the AC was blasting here too.
IrishLiz
Ryan, that poster is awesome. It actually snowed 6 inches (it has never snowed, EVER) and we didn't get the day off. A lot of kids were marked as skipping school because they were afraid to drive on the iced over roads. One of my friends almost crashed from the ice :( That's insane! You should totally get the day off for that. We never get snow days or anything here. There are a few days during the monsoon season here where I think you should get days off, especially when there's flash flooding. Our drainage systems aren't the best. I've never had a school day canceled. That story made me laugh. :) Oh and Firefox says that only canceled is right. I'm pretty sure it just has one l. Divya Bean
That sounds terrible! I would have died. :laughingsmiley: I like it when it is raining and I have just come back inside and I am all wet and then I go have a hot chamomile tea. :wub_anim: EDIT: We had a huge blizzard in December and we got a 6 day weekend!!!! :P
IrishLiz
Oh and I love when it rains, but it doesn't rain a lot here. The monsoons storms are beautiful and a bit scary at the same time (microbursts are the worst) and the smells are awesome, where it's in the desert with the cresote and other plants or in the higher altitudes up north with the pine trees. Oh and Divya, tea is the absolute best on cold, rainy days. well, it's always good...
Spritzie
That story made me laugh. :) Oh and Firefox says that only canceled is right. I'm pretty sure it just has one l. Chrome is hereby, FIRED. <_< How dare it confuse me??? That sounds terrible! I would have died. :laughingsmiley: I like it when it is raining and I have just come back inside and I am all wet and then I go have a hot chamomile tea. :wub_anim: EDIT: We had a huge blizzard in December and we got a 6 day weekend!!!! :P It was horrible. It was bad. I was freezing the rest of the day. Even my hoodie was soaked. The only blizzard we got, was when we got stuck in Denver. Divya Bean
Stuck in Denver from the snow? Ouch! I dont think I have ever gotten delayed because of snow, except I have from school! :P
Spritzie
It was bad. Every highway out of Denver was closed. We didn't get home until 6 the next morning. The highways didn't reopen until 4:30am.
Divya Bean
Oh wow. Evil snow. But I love it because it is fun to sled.
Spritzie
I always dread snow. I hate driving in it. And ice. And scraping the car. I'm moving to Florida.
