  1. If not black, then definitely dark colors.

Someday, I want to buy a red dress for funerals, because for quite a few years, I've wanted to wear red for mourning. (Completely opposite of the Japanese tradition of wearing red at weddings, I know, but that's me.)

  2. My mom feels that way, so we kind of did it like a dress rehearsal when her father died. People told stories I hadn't heard (and my mom told the one I couldn't tell) and we had a luncheon with cookout-y foods. (I helped my grandma make a lot of it and my uncle did the brats all himself!)

  3. We've talked about a lot of these in the cultural traditions thread, but it looks like we're headed for a new one.

I believe it was Siniri who said that people ignore funeral processions these days. My dad is a funeral assistant and he's mentioned before that people don't stop for processions.

I once crossed the street in front of a procession, because I didn't know about it back then. Oh, did I catch hell!

  4. I'm interested in cults, period. I liked Straight Talk About Cults (Kay Marie Porterfield). I realize it was supposed to be something like "how to talk to your teens about cults" or something like that, but it was fascinating just the same.

Ah...I just discovered (as I suspected) that I wrote a review before I changed my name:

I'm a senior in high school who just finished this book (among others on cults) and I think this book is quite useful. Who knew Kellogg's (in my own state, no less) and the Oneida silverware company began as cults?

It's not just good for understanding cults, it makes a wonderful writer's reference, too! My novel involves a cult, but this book helped me see that it was far too tame and stood outside the guidelines found in most real life cults.

    A must read!

Never wrote that book, by the way...

  5. I worked in a funeral home for two bits of nine months each. One of the best jobs I've ever had, actually...it was just a bit short on human contact. (Not because of deceased clients! I did paperwork and not too many people worked upstairs. Not like they do now.)

  6. Herrshmoo, I took your (NYT) dialect quiz! Apparently, I could be from Toledo, Ohio, Rockford, Illinois or St. Louis, Missouri--all because of the way I pronounce the words "caught" and "cot"!

Hert: That's right, you just got a king, didn't you? It's been queens for a while, right? That's cool. ^_^

Deb: The kids menu thing is usually only in sitdown restaurants. I don't think places like McDonald's enforce an age rule, because I got a kids meal when I was seventeen. :D

Siniri: I've looked up teeth dreams several times and they all seem to agree it's a stress dream that's especially common when you have braces.

    Lev: BAREFOOT! All year long!

When I went to Las Vegas in 2008, I danced barefoot on the patio at a magician's house and everyone was like, "Aren't you cold?!" Shoot, no. It was in the 60s that night and I go barefoot in the winter (inside the house)...my feet get a LOT colder then.

Oh and since no one answered...a wake is a visitation or viewing. Sometimes (depending on the culture), the family will have a separate party outside of the funeral home visitation.

I think it comes from the idea that you sit with the deceased for a day to make sure they don't wake up. (!) I don't know if sitting shiv (sp?) is the same idea or not, because I'm not Jewish.

In Michigan, we generally call the fizzy stuff "pop", but after my mom had a boyfriend for a while who was born in Delaware, I started calling it "soda". It's probably best to do that when you're in retail, because you never know where your customers are from.

I personally think it's "sinful" not to learn how to swim if you're from Michigan. We touch four of the five Great Lakes and have lots of inland bodies of water. There's no excuse!

And if you've ever seen something like this? It's mostly true. :D

  7. No idea for any of it. I don't even know which way one of the Ebil Groups is headed, because they're keeping mum 'til signup day. (Even if I did know, I wouldn't say, 'cause I've been building cred with them. ;) )

I was going to average out based on the last four years, but I don't see a rank listed for last year. Based on 2010-12, fifth place is a fairly reasonable assumption.

  8. I have the opposite problem, Sarah...I love being barefoot. I miss sandal season, because sandals and flipflops are the closest I can get to being barefoot in public while still behaving. (Conversely, I hate places like campground and dorms showers where you have to wear sandals...it's all wet and squidgy going back!)

In fact, I went out to dinner last night with my cousin and complained to my dad that if I wore sandals, it would probably start raining again. Smart dad...he said to take shoes and socks, just in case. :D I wore sandals to the restaurant and then it was kind of rainy when I got there, so I changed before getting out of the car. :)

  9. You know what? I've changed my mind. I do wonder what it would be like if my Neopets were around in real life. (How would I deal with eight of them?)

    • You wonder if a Neopets movie would be any good
    • You think of how vast the Pokemon universe has grown and how you've lost track...and decide you ought to stick with Neopets
  10. Em...why don't you just leave it out? xD

I've discovered how to get the coldest pop in the fridge...where the coldest spot is. I don't like soda from any other shelf, because it's not cold enough. (Our fridge is 40 degrees [4.44 Celsius], so drinks can be fantastically cold if you have them in the right place.)
