Lab Ray Questions

So I have the lab maps for both the traditional and the petpet. If I zap my pet/petpet and it changes color or species, is there no way to remove it without it reverting so I can change and change back or sell the new one? I didn't know that was a thing, but maybe I am doing it wrong? Any thoughts?

Petpet's do revert if they're removed from your pet, yeah, I think this is intentional so people can't create and then sell rare petpets for basically free?

I find that handy actually if the ray's zapped them to something gross and then leaves 'em like that forever.
