The whole reason I'm wary of credit cards is the whole 'spending money you don't have' kind of thing. I'm sticking to debit cards. :D (I think you're the first non-American I've heard mention credit scores. Have they suddenly become more important in the UK? I've never heard anyone here mention them.)

I can't remember when credit scores became a thing over here, they certainly weren't in 2000 when I got a mortgage, but they very much are now, annoyingly. : /

Lol, whilst trying to find out I see this gem on Wiki . . .

Quote

United Kingdom

See also: Credit scorecards

Credit Scoring in the United Kingdom is very different to that of the United States and other nations. There is no such thing as a universal credit score or credit rating in the UK. Each lender will assess potential borrowers on their own criteria, and these algorithms are effectively trade secrets.

 Yeah, you apply for a credit card and are refused because your rating isn't good enough, but you're not given ANY information pertaining to this, just a flat refusal. And the real kicker? Applying for a card and being refused has a negative impact on your score, thus making it even harder for you to get credit, it's unbelievable.  I think I'm lucky I was accepted for mine.

I'm gonna take a guess at about 10 years for how long we've been lumbered with 'em.

@jellysundae Oh man, that sounds really random/unfair!
I just checked the Dutch Wikipedia page for Credit Score, and it mentions that Holland and Belgium don't really use them, but banks can check up on this kind of information through some kind of credit institution, but this mostly seems to be done when people are applying for a loan. I'm hoping it stays this way in Holland. XD

Your country seems to have a lot of common sense, so I think there's more chance than normal of you managing to avoid this modern scourge!

I guess it's distance that makes that possible. Nothing looks as bad when it's far enough away to not affect you personally.

Good point. I'm still happy to live here though, it's just that it feels like we're moving in the wrong direction.
