Working on what you hate because you need the money.

Has anyone been through this before?

I've worked 2 years as an English teacher (English as a Foreign Language, that is) because I needed the money, even though it was the most horrible and soul-sucking experience of my life.

And right now I can't help but feel like dog doo because tomorrow I'll start a 1-month-long training... to work as an English teacher in another course, again.

Once again, I need the money. Why don't I try something else? Well, there's nothing else I actually know how to do. I mean, I guess I could try working at a mall store, but the schedules (at least in my country) are slave-like and would leave me no time for University (plus my wage would be even more ridiculous than a teacher's wage).

So, yeah. I'm very depressed because I just HATEHATEHATE everything that has to do with teaching, but right now there seems to be no way but to endure it.

Any thoughts? :(

Commissions have pushed me to hate painting, so I know how you feel.

I'm finishing up my painting degree with a minor in art history..so, you can guess the amazing job opportunities that accompany those o.O haha (which is none XP)

I don't want to teach either!! and everyone's pushing me to get an art education degree. Even my art teachers. SO I don't know what I'm going to do

I kind of decided after I get my bachelors of fine arts in painting I'm going to do some sort of online trade school. Myabe for somethig like medical billing and coding (or something atrocious I would never want to do :( ) But I'll honestly take whatever I can get to make money. As long as I'm happy with my painting as a side job.Right now I'm illustrating a book (nothing like a big deal just for the local elementary school's special ed program) and that's a fun project.

I was asked to volunteer this summer again for a local art museum...but the hours are long (7 hours) and there's no hope for a permanent job as basically all their workers are volunteers. I couldn't even get the job giving museum tours as it's reserved for the old retired folks because there's no chance of them escaping for an actual paying job. lol

I'm not technically out in the wild yet (AKA the working world) as I finish up school. But I already know it's going to be difficult

I'm so sorry about your experience. I really hope you do find at least SOMETHING that is more bearable :( keep searching! maybe a job opportunity will just drop on your lap out of the blue one day. and let us know when it does :)

What are you going to school to do? What would you rather be doing? What about the job do you not like?

If I knew any foreign languages, I would take your job (so you could do something you like). I'm going to school to be a teacher (early childhood, pre-k to 3rd).

I was supposed to be majoring in History but I quit because of a myriad of reasons which I'm too tired to write right now. I'm studying Psychology now, and that's what I want to do.

I'd rather do ANYTHING but teach, but lo and behold, teaching is the only thing I actually know how to do. I wish I had any other ability or talent, but I don't. Or at least I can't think of anything. :(

Stay away from retail! I managed a jewelry store for nearly 3 years and a small piece of me died while I was there. At times I was working nearly 70 hours a week for pretty crummy wages compared to what some retail companies pay. Even in jewelry it was such a thankless job and a lot of people (in the US at least) can be downright rude to sales people and those working customer service. Not to mention it screws with every aspect of your life - your sleep schedule and eating schedule are altered and forget having the time/motivation to go to the gym or see friends...

I'm still bitter if you can't tell haha

Yessssss I feel your pain. I've been working a desk job doing payroll for almost 3 years now. No opportunity to move up at this company, but anything around here is not paying as well or about the same. I have too many bills to quit and search for something else or go back to school (I have a degree in accounting). It's boring. SO BORING. And monotonous. And boring. Did I mention boring?

Oh and unhealthy - sitting at a desk is awful for you, especially for hours at a time. I do Crossfit in the evenings, but I don't think it's enough when you're sitting all day.

I hope you find a way out of it!

I kind of understand. My job isn't soul-sucking, but I don't like it either.

Retail just isn't a lot of fun, and at my job they kind of throw you to the wolves as far as training goes. One day they stuck me behind the customer service desk, with nothing except a quick review of how to answer the phones and transfer calls. There was one other girl behind the counter with me and then she got sent off to do something else and I was alone. I had to keep hunting down a manager who was busy running the register (why they didn't put me there and her in customer service, I don't know) to ask what to do. I felt so unprofessional having to say, "I don't know how to do what you want, let me ask." Then, on the same day, they put me at the returns desk, something else I'd never done before. I know that's how it is when you do something new, you have to ask questions, but I'd have preferred someone actually being on hand to help me out.

I hope your teaching job is more fun than the last one was! Hopefully it won't be as bad as you remember it being, and you'll feel a bit better about it. If not, well, at least it pays, and it's only temporary. :)

I have had several of those jobs. But usually only when there was a lull in my nanny jobs, like when my family went on vacation or my kiddo aged up :sad02: . So I was lucky enough to never have long periods of time where I had to work somewhere I hated. But I was raising my nephews so I always had to have some source of income. The worst was when I was a 'reservation specialist' for Marriott. I was paid $15 an hour plus commission so I worked it every-time I wasn't nannying. But It was horrible. Luckily my longest stretch there was 6 months.

I am lucky enough to be a stay-at-home, un-schooling my kid and nephew, and having a little at home business.

I hope things start to look up for you :<

:hugs:
