Set Analysis

This got quite a good response the other day when someone was asking about their next weapon, so I thought I'd try it and see if anyone had any suggestions for improvement...

  • 72H
  • 74S
  • 76D

  • Static Cling
  • Bandage
  • Cranky
  • Sear
  • Lens Flare

  • Oversized Maractite Rune Sword
  • Royal Blue Cape
  • Randomly Firing Freeze Ray
  • Thermal Explosive Device

(I have the bracers of fury and boots of leaping, but I don't include them, as they're just there for my Shenkuu River Rush fun. ;) )

In terms of faerie abilities:

Shade is much better than bandage. The amount of damage blocked will be much more than the 5hp bandage gives you.

I would say that Icicle's 6 icons are more useful than 4x2 that you get from sear, but it's pretty close.

Items:

Your constants are pretty weak. I would recommend upgrading to something like the Scroll of Knowledge (11 icons, ~90k np) and/or the Scroll of Ultranova (9.8 icons, basically free) depending on your budget.

This is a great resource for finding weapons in your price range: http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/articles/viewarticle/basic-weapon-sets

fireembemphanatic gave pretty good advice, and it's cool he included the link to the basic weapon sets. They should give you an idea of what's out there and at least a decent estimate of the prices of the suggested items.

I also agree with his assessment of your faerie abilities. If you'd like to see our guide on those, it's right here.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/articles/viewarticle/new-faerie-abilities/

The ones with a dark gray background are the ones considered "best". However, since you have Bandage and Sear, switching those abilities will only cost you half of what they would've originally. That's how some people did it when the prices of Light Faeries was super high, like for the ability Lens Flare. I went for Throw Pillows, and then got Lens Flare at half the cost of the original blessing price to switch. lol

But Bottled Faeries NOW are SO darn cheap, that cost is not really a major issue. Since abilities are now level-based, in many cases if you know what ability you want to go for, you can just save up the specific bottled faeries you would need in your SDB from battling or get their blessings right away so that the numbers are bulked up. Before I got my pet to his current level, I already had saved enough Light Blessings for the ability I wanted him to get when he reached the target level. And I've already got enough blessings for my targeted ability when I reach the next Ability level.

Also, Cranky is good for a bit of offense, and there's not really a right or wrong ability to choose on that tier, I went with "meh" because I tend to be a bit more defensively-minded in my battling. ;) Not saying you need to change it, just saying that meh is a good alternative if you need a bit of defense.

Equipment-wise. Depending on who you battle in the BD, I'd suggest a Leaf Shield, especially if you go after Jelly Chia. ;) Your Strength and Defense stats are pretty even, and if you keep them like that, Leaf Shield may serve you well. Heck, I keep one in my battle set, just in case, and it's been there most of the time, for years. LOL And against something like Jelly Chia, it should be pretty effective, as Jelly Chia Mostly uses water, earth, physical, which the leaf shield defends again, and then if you had something that blocked darkness, like a dual duty such as Hanso Charisma Charm, for when he throws an Evil Snowball, you'd be pretty well set up defensively. ;)

Here is Jelly Chia's profile.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/oneplayer/viewprofile/142/

Hanso Charisma Charm.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/2664/

The Charm is about 400-500k on the TP it seems. 10 icon attack obviously isn't the best for the price, however, it does block ALL darkness while attacking with those 10 icons. The choice is really up to you. I have one, I like it, but I haven't been dueling any major darkness using opponents where I needed it for awhile now. But in a tough battle, every little bit can help. ;)

There are some other, weaker items that can block dark and some that are dual duty as well. I did a quick search for Kacheek items in the BD Database, and found this.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/1142

But even at the cheapest price on the wiz of 7900np, it's over paying for an underpowered item. Though it does have some dark blocking ability, I wouldn't bother with this and look for something else.

Still, I spent most of my battle career using cheap "budget-items" to take on opponents a fair bit stronger than my peophin. So, however you wish to play it.

Also, I'd recommend reflectors as another possibility. Expert Lens should still be fairly inexpensive for reflecting 50% Light, without any known chance of breaking. The following reflectors all do 50% but CAN break FOREVER and then they must be bought again.

Turbo Flame Reflector = Fire

Ultra Dark Reflectorb = Dark

Double Dryer = Air

Shovel Plus = Earth

Dual Battle Mirror = Light (Don't get this, Expert Lens won't break, from what we know of it)

Super U-Bend = Water

I hope that this helps with some ideas. :)

Best of luck!

I'm not going near the jelly chia any time soon, so I don't really need the leaf shield, do I?

Since sear is so close to icicle, I'm keeping it; though I'm trading bandage to shade as recommended. (I already had enough power stocked up--no problem there.)

So other than that, I just need something from the reflector list and I'm set, si?

Just the cloak, the freeze ray and a scroll? *blinks confusedly* That doesn't sound like much of a battle kit.

Thank you for your advice, but I think I'm going to wait and see if Aqua agrees with you or has a different suggestion.

The prices for the items below may vary. I should ask what your budget is, and are you planning on battling 1-player opponents, or other players? (2-player).

If you are planning on battling 2-player, you'd want to set up a bit differently. I'm not a 2-player battler. I go against the 1-player opponents 99.9% of the time. If you want to go against the 1-player opponents here is the listing of active battle challengers. (Not including the Obelisk War challengers that appear for the skirmishes)

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/oneplayer/index/

Study what icons the 1-player opponent uses in it's battle equipment. Then you can plan your battle equipment around fighting that opponent. It will give you an advantage.

You could certainly sell your Oversized Maractite Rune Sword, If you don't know it's stats, it has 7 offensive icons and defends 3 water icons. Sells for about 17k on the shop wiz as of this moment.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/2677/

Scroll of Ultranova is a decent deal. 9.8 icons using Fire, Light and Air. Hard to block. ;D

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/2838/

Some alternatives would be

Scroll of the Scholar (10 total icons, 2 each of 5 types)

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/2638/

Scroll of the Fool (10 total icons)

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/2900/

I checked the Royal Blue Cape's stats, and woah, not bad! Granted it's 12 icons divided by 4 types, so defends 3 icons each, but in those it blocks, it defends 3 Fire and 3 Air, not the easiest icons to block. And the price on the TP is around 300k.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/2697/

As for your freezer, depending on your budget, that's a decent one, as the Scroll of Freezing, CAN and WILL eventually break and need to be repurchased. RFFR requires some luck, but, it's not bad until you can afford a 100% Freezer.

If you're keeping your pet a Kacheek, a Kacheek Life Potion would be the cheaper healing way to go.

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/1148

I hope this helps.

Something I've always found helpful, and kind of fun, is when I would have some free time, I would explore a battlepedia just to get a feel for what weapons are out there and such. Go through some of the articles, do price checks, and if you see a weapon you kind of like, or your think looks cool, copy the name and enter it into the Battlepedia's search box to see it's stats.

Look at the top-rated weapons too, there are many in there that are not hyper-expensive.

Oh yes you asked about the Leaf Shield, no you don't NEED it. I used it as an example, but I do recommend it for some. Like I said, I've been battling for years, and only rarely have I found occassion to switch it out for a different piece of equipment.

I think I looked at the top ten list here for weapon choices...but those have probably changed since I last looked.

I primarily do 1p battles and the rune sword is supposed to be my primary weapon. But the way I've been using my set is freeze/flare, grenade/sear, sword/whatever. (I think shade, now that you've had me swap out.)

To get down to the meat and potatoes of your statement, you're saying, "Drop the grenade--there's no real use for it--and sell the sword for the ultranova scroll." Correct?

Yeah, pretty much. Depending on your budget, you might consider getting a Honey Potion, or skipping the once per battle bombs altogether as the weapons usable for every round are getting close to what the Honey Potion can do only once per battle. I'd recommend Rainbow Clockwork Grundo, but I do believe that was retired and will probably be inflated. Generally, the Ghostkerbomb is considered the best NP bomb in the game. There are the Grapes of Wrath and the Moehog Skull, but those are SUPER expensive from the smuggler's cove and a super rare haunted scratchcard prize, respectively. If you decide to not have a bomb in your arsenal right now, I'd recommend looking at the 1-use Snowballs. Fairly inexpensive and some like the Sticky Snowball, or Sand Snowball used to be the best options. Not sure about the new snowballs that have been released since then.

Interesting order to your battling.

If I may make a couple quick suggestions..

Generally, when the opponent is frozen, either with Lens Flare/Warlock's Rage, during that turn you use your 2 strongest weapons. Or if you use an item that freezes, the turn following the freezing.

For example. Say I'm up against Witch Doctor Tekkitu, on Mighty difficulty (the red/orange face). I use my Lens Flare to stop him from acting that turn, and in that same turn, use my 2 best weapons. In my case, Ghostkerbomb, and Stone Foam Finger. In Round 2, I would use, well, in my case I would use Warlock's rage (Does the exact same thing as Lens Flare) and my Stone Foam Finger along with my 2nd best weapon, having used my bomb in the first round. So I would choose Altador Cup Throwing Star.

Or, if In my first round, I used my Freezer, with a weapon, and lens flare, then in round two, I could use 2 weapons, and an offensive faerie ability such as Sear.

if the battle lasts beyond your freezing(s) then have something defensive ready. SPEAKING OF, I can't believe I overlooked this, but you should really get a Downsize!

http://battlepedia.thedailyneopets.com/index.php/weapon/viewweap/273/

It's relatively cheap, works Once PER battle, NEVER needs to be re-bought, and it's defensive ability? Cuts ALL damage by 50% for ONE turn! I freakin' love this except that I don't care much for Bruces. lol I did a quick shop wiz lookup, and the cheapest I saw is 4300np. You may only equip one of these at a time. So only buy one. ;)

WELL within almost anyone's battle budget!

Efficient battling comes with some experience, but mostly a good strategy before entering the battle. ;)

I hope I've answered your questions well. If you've any other questions feel free to ask. :) I'm good with budget battling and coming up with strategies for battles like that. Since it's how I battled most of my battling career. ;)

Best of luck!

Hey hey hey there!

Okay so first of all. You've been given very awesome advice by Aqua and Fire (It's cool how their names are element-based. I just noticed @.@).

Your pet has a very balanced set of stats. I do suggest you continue training your HSD (Health/Strength/Defense). You're pretty close to an 85 strength boost, which will increase the damage per icon that your weapons do. So I suggest you prioritize that (others might disagree with me).

A set would typically include two constants, a shield, a dual-duty, a healer, a freezer, a bomb and Downsize! (just because it's awesome like that).

As for a complete set, I agree with them. My advised (low-budget set) would be this:

Scroll of Knowledge/Scroll of Ultranova

Scroll of Knowledge/Scroll of Ultranova

Hanso Charisma Charm/Rusty Pitchfork

Leaf Shield

Randomly Firing Freeze Ray

Downsize!

Kacheek Life Potion/Everlasting Crystal Apple/Cursed Elixir

Robot Muffin

I also suggest Scroll of Ultranova since its icons are generally harder to block. Although Scroll of Knowledge (Offensive: 2 earth, 2 water, 2 dark, 2 hair, 3 light) deals more icons, but also more common ones. I suggest wielding Scroll of Knowledge x2 or Scroll of Ultranova x2 because it would stack up icons and make them harder to block.

I suggest getting Rusty Pitchfork because it's a great dual-duty (although expensive). It blocks a widely used icon (Defensive: 5 icons of physical) and deals some pretty sufficient damage (Offensive: 3 fire, 3 earth, 5 physical). Hanso Charisma Charm is pretty cool too (Offensive: 5 earth, 5 light; Defensive: All dark) and will be a keeper throughout your Battledome experience.

Leaf Shield is a beginner battler's best-shield friend (WHUT) as it blocks some of the more common icons for low-level battling (Defensive: 5 earth, 5 water, 3 physical). Randomly Firing Freeze Ray would be a beautiful addition to your set as it one of the more reliable freezers at a low price range.

Although Kacheek Life Potion is amazing for your Kacheek and would probably be a keeper (so long as your pet is a Kacheek), I suggested two other healers you might be interested in. Cursed Elixir drains 20 HP from your opponent (I use this a lot on the Chia Clown, HA!) and heals you 20 HP. This damage is also unblockable. Everlasting Crystal Apple heals you 30 HP and is a multi-heal item: meaning you can heal 30 HP over and over and over again, granted this also takes up a slot when you attack.

I suggested Robot Muffin simply because it would display a different set of icons in bulk from what you would use (Offensive: 5 fire, 5 air, 5 physical). Other muffins may be of service to you as well. However, you can just use a different muffin because it's cheaper and stuff :D

In terms of abilities, I suggest:

Static Cling (Offensive: 3 light), Cranky/Meh (5% add or reduce damage you do/done to you) Icicle (Offensive: 6 water), Shade (5% block damage of 3 random types icons) and Lens Flare (Prevents damage to be done by opponents).

Good luck! And just neomail me if you need more advice or whatever :D

I agree with you but I recommend Rejuvenating Jar of Brains (which heals 60 HP) as opposed to Kacheek Life Potion until HP is past 100 or so.

Also, I think you'd need more than 1 shields, so you could ditch 1 of your Scroll of Ultranova/Scroll of Knowledge and get another shield. Good shields I recommend (except Leaf Shield) are: Wanderers Cloak, Sophies Magic Hat, and Kiko Skull Pirate Hat (This is so underrated), Studded Leather Cuirass. Rotate them as needed.

Everlasting Crystal Apple is quite expensive at more than 2 million. You would outgrow these pretty quickly so I don't think you should get those.

Dang.

I forgot that her HP was 72. In which case, I do agree that you should get Rejuvenating Jar of Brains momentarily until you increase your HP.

I could also suggest Short Sleeved Yellow Tunic for a 75 HP heal. But Rejuvenating Jar of Brains might be the 'best bang for your buck', as someone else previously put.

I agree with the shields: you can simply purchase numerous shields and rotate depending on your enemy. I also suggest getting a Blue Draping Cloak, which work best for 2p (should you ever decide to go for it) and would pair wonderfully with Sophies Magic Hat (as the pair would block at least 3 icons of every icon).
