missmadiemay
I know there are some people out there who collect stamps. But if you're just now starting, is it even worth it to try? Some stamps, coins, shells, etc are not even on the market anymore. Others are 25 mil? Definitely not anywhere near that. At least with the expensive ones you have a goal, as unattainable as it may seem. It's pretty discouraging though when you look up a few and they are NOWHERE to be found. I started with just a couple of pages trying to finish one at a time before I realized this.
Rebecca~
It depends on why you want to collect them. I like collecting them just because I like collecting- adding a new thing to any of my collections makes me super happy, so to me, collecting makes sense. If you're only collecting because you want to eventually complete them, maybe not. XD
Emily
Many stamp collectors have been griping about this for years, myself included. I agree with Rebecca. If you're hoping to eventually collect all of them, you may find yourself frustrated. I have numerous pages that require four or less stamps to finish, but half of the missing ones haven't been for sale in years or they cost 100 mil+ each. However, if you're just doing it for something to do and not necessarily worrying about completion, it can be quite fun. It might be worth focusing on full pages that don't yet have avvies, as they're usually cheaper to complete and don't have as many stamps that don't exist in the economy. The sea shell page is a great one to work on. All the items are readily available, and the most expensive one is about 6-7 mil. You get the accomplishment of actually finishing a full page, and you're set if TNT ever releases an avvie for it :D Mouseykins, Lamppost, Duma and 2 others
rinoa812
I have heard that some of the unbuyables get auctioned off now by a neo team account but I doubt its too many
Rebecca~
I have heard that some of the unbuyables get auctioned off now by a neo team account but I doubt its too many Yep they do, but they still start the bidding in the hundred-million range, if I remember right. They've also done less than 10 stamps since they started a couple years ago, so they aren't really flooding the market.
Neomancer
On the one hand stamps are supposed to be valuable and rare, on the other, this kind of makes collecting pointless for 95% of users. Though there are still plenty of cheap ones you can fill your collection with.
Lamppost
If your goal is to get as many stamps as you can rather than to finish pages, you can get pretty far without worry about those stamps that don't exist in the economy. You can probably get 400 stamps without spending much more than 100k per stamp, and there are a bunch more that are just over 100k. It's all about what your goal is. I am missing 5 right now, although I've made offers on 3. I can't seem to find the deep sea shell anywhere, and the golden shell I've only found one for 12 mil. That one will just have to wait I suppose! Thanks for the replies everyone. I am doing it pretty much for something to do, I just know that once I complete a page as far as I can those ugly little squares are going to bug me so bad haha. And it stinks that there are.. 5 or 6 avatars? that are pretty much unobtainable. Maybe TNT will decide to give us another chance later on down the road, but I don't have high hopes for that. Does anyone have any other pages they would suggest that are actually able to be completed? I see the maractite coins are not all even out yet, is this correct? The Scarab page also has one missing, though that will be released soon. The Scarab page is pretty good, with only a few that are ridiculously expensive- though the Collectable Black Scarab is hard to find for serious collectors too, I think. The Evil Coconuts are pretty cheap to collect as well- I think they're all at about 100k, so it should be only about 3 million for the entire page. :) missmadiemay
missmadiemay
Thank you! I am actually just playing coconut shy in hopes to get quite a few coconuts so I can save some money :P I believe I've gotten 4 so far. Speaking of, I need to go put them on my page! I didn't realize the Evil Coconuts were that cheap. I think I'll keep trying Coconut Shy for a while though, to cut down on costs. Right now, I'm trying to get enough stuff collected to be eligible for a trophy. Though, I'm taking a break from hunting until I recoup my on-hand cash. I'm hoping that, after taking out the next to impossible to find stamps, there are enough left for the avatar.
negohawk
Evil Coconuts are cheap except Flaming Evil Cocount which sells for 40-50mil. So overall Coconut album is NOT cheap. How do u know the last scarab will be released soon?

lianakos
When I saw your post yesterday, I tried to calculate how much do the avatars from stamp collection cost. It's a lot!!! I don't thing I will ever start (never say never :D) but for the time been I don't think so. If getting the avatars was cheaper, maybe I would have gone for it. It's so much, and a lot of the stamps for the avatar pages are not even out there to buy :shiftyeyes_anim: Evil Coconuts are cheap except Flaming Evil Cocount which sells for 40-50mil. There's always got to be at least one crazy priced one doesn't there? I didn't see that one on the trading post or auctions either, I just checked. Maybe I will be lucky enough to get one at Coconut Shy, I just got another one this morning :laughingsmiley:
passiflora
Maybe I will be lucky enough to get one at Coconut Shy, I just got another one this morning :laughingsmiley: Dang, you're way luckier than I am! I'm with most people on the "just doing it for fun" though - I don't think I'll ever make it to the high scores list, but I just love collecting things. :) I just set goals based on # of stamps, not pages. For example, I'm going pretty slow but hoping to have 200 by the new year! missmadiemay
jcpet
I see stamp collecting as something that I would like to do, but only when I have extra NP to splurge on it. Until then, I prefer to invest my NP on other more achievable goals (like the battledome). Right now, my album only consists of super cheap stamps (1-2k or less each, I believe), and the stamps I get for "free" from site events. lovedwallflower
I've been using this guide to help me start of my stamp collection: http://www.neopets.com/~narazok I only have 50-something so far, but the collector in me can't resist, even though the avatars are impossibly out of reach :(
Breezescout
Space coins are fun but really expensive. I have most of the shells and scarabs so it off to coconuts for me!
2_crazyman_2
Loving all the comments and diaologue! Ive been considering starting serious stamp collecting the last few days, but honestly the idea of not completing the pages/getting the avvie is a bit of a bummer, but after reading other collector's attitudes and experiences about the fun in collecting what you can has really motivated me to go with it. Thanks! Bodhi and missmadiemay
_snuffles
I know what you mean, I only want to get the stamps for the avatar related pages...I wish TNT would release some as a plot prize or something. I know part of the fun of stamp collecting is the rarity and value, but how many people on this site can honestly afford a 25 mill stamp? And God forbid you want more than one UB.. :(
missmadiemay
Right? I don't even know how long it would take me to save up that much, especially considering my buying habits
Venus0523
I recently started collecting stamps for the avi's, but after reading all of the posts here, I believe I will spend my NP's on a goal more likely to be able to be reached. Thank you very much for the link, it was quite helpful!
spazzy_child
I'd like to get some of the avatars for the stamps. But who knows when that will happen! I also just like building up my account to make it looks nice with collections of things :)
nadabrovitchka
It makes me sad that side of collecting stamps, however it's always awesome when I had something nwe to the collection. Even if the page is never complete
