hickt0wn Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 Recently, I have noticed a couple new trends/other little things about PC chatters. People are still obsessed with Draiks, even though they are getting so much easier to obtain from the Forgotten Shore. How has their value not dropped yet? Almost nobody adopts out anymore. Even if they have a low value pet, they tend to want to trade. 3L and 4L names - whats with this?! I understand that you want a WN pet with something pronounceable but it seems like anyone trading ONLY wants 3L or 4L names. UC pets - I personally think some of the UC pets are not as nice as the converted. I don't understand the obsession with this. While some pets look better UC, like Faerie Pteri, I guess I just don't understand the whole thing. Those are just some things I've noticed about the PC board lately. Do you have any comments about my observations? Anything you have observed? Quote
miemieh Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I think people want to look 'rich' on neopets. If you have got a lot of pets that are 'popular'='valuable' they will have more Look-up views and Neomail. Even if it's only mail like: 'Do you trade your 3 letter UC very-expensive Draik' Quote
Artios Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 People want Draiks because of how they look and because they have been (until recently) hard to obtain cheaply. UC pets.. are UC. There is no way you can obtain it unless you've been playing prior to the change/miraculously found one in the pound. Regardless of how they look, it's all about having a pet that people would not normally have. Plus, it's pretty much the only thing left about old Neo. Quote
Welcome Back Apathy Posted January 20, 2013 Posted January 20, 2013 I still have no idea how idea how three letter names are supposed to be "well-named"...hard to get because of popularity, yes. Well-named, no. Pronounceable, no unless there's a vowel. All of my pets have names that are actually pronounceable. (Hanomian, Mellitah, uber_music_faerie*, and Zaplavine.) (*Remember when Uber faeries were a thing? Yeah...) Quote
Kaana Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 1. Draiks are still the most expensive pet to get, so as far as converted pets go they are top of the food chain species-wise. Where they've really dropped in value is in relation to UCs - to some people draiks are status symbols and with the right combination of other things (stats and the "right" name, mostly) you can still get UCs with them, however the UC will be of a lower "value" than before the forgotten shore. 2. On that, I counted three draik UFA boards yesterday within about an hour's time frame. There are so many pirate krawks UFA it's getting ridiculous. I also know a lot of people just list their UFA pets in already established "adoption agencies" because then they don't have to advertise as much/at all, hence less UFA boards on the PC. 3. Same deal as UCs - you can't make them yourself. Neopets now requires created pets have at least five characters in their name. There is a limited supply, they get put on a premium. 4. I agree with you, but people will like what they like. It's not really our call to say that it's wrong for people to aspire for them - I just wouldn't do it myself. Quote

Somewhat recently, I managed to create a four letter name. That was 79 days ago. Quote
Nika Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Miemieh, I totally agree about getting more attention for looking rich. When I see flashy lookups that say "omg I am soooo tired of all these neomails and friend requests!" I do a little internal eyeroll. It's like a rapper telling everyone to stop talking about his cars and jewelery.* Whatever, bro, you know you love the attention. Back to pets though, can UC pets be traded? I thought they couldn't be transferred without changing, so I'm surprised they're important to people who don't already own them. *Okay. No more analogies for me today, I promise. Zephyr 1 Quote
Zephyr Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 Huh, I thought those trends have been around for quite a while now. I think the 3L/4L trend is slowly easing up. Last year 3L & 4L boards were everywhere. But when I was lurking a couple of week back, sure they're still there, but not so much. I also don't quite get the Draik thing. I suppose just like an item trade, different traders value pets differently. If I were a trader, I would lean more towards what Kaana had mentioned. PDE custom vs UC, I would value the latter more as they're unattainable. It could also be a matter of personal preference. I'm aware that a lot of members like customizing Draiks & hence the price drop hasn't put a dent on their popularity yet. What I really don't get is the thing with Google searches. Like what's up with that? The more returns the merrier because it means it's a common & highly sought after name? Or that it's so rare, the name falls off the Google radar? UC & converteds, I love both. I started playing when the pets were still in their UC state. But I'm a change-happy person so when given the option I converted all of my pets & have lots of fun dressing them up. But looking at some of the UCs, I do miss some of them like the unique pose of the RB Kyrii and how the grey pets have various ways of looking depressed & adorable at the same time haha. I think what I miss is the distinction each color & species seem to have instead of the same old standard pose & grin. But in the world of status symbol, it's often about out LE the other person: I have a Draik~ So what, I have a Draik with the most expensive color :P Psh, my uber pricey Draik has a RW 4L name /talk to palm Naah, mine is only 3L. Guys, mine is the UC faerie Draik with just 1 letter!* Nope, my UC plushie is alphabetically ahead of yours ... I have a bajillion UCs on my side! *Just an example here. Not saying that all the owners of a single letter pet are after status symbol or attention Back to pets though, can UC pets be traded? I thought they couldn't be transferred without changing, so I'm surprised they're important to people who don't already own them. Rotfl on the analogy  No, they won't change either via a transfer or when picked up from the pound :) Emily 1 Quote
hrtbrk Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 The value of Draiks has dropped a lot, compared to what it used to be imo. I see a lot of adoptions haha. Their boards die rather quickly because the PC moves so fast. Additionally, a lot of people request apps for their adoptions and have an adoption agency via pet page instead, but they are there. 3 and 4 letter pronounceable names are rare, which is why they are so sought after. I can understand the desire for an UC pet, but I personally wouldn't go crazy trying to get one. Granted, I wasn't as invested into Neopets during that era, so the nostalgia and preferred art is probably a big selling point for a lot of people. And of course there are the people who use it as a status symbol. The PC used to be insanely vicious, but I feel that since Krawks and Draiks are more readily available, it has calmed down enough and more people are able to achieve their dream pets. It gets a little feisty during a purge, but that's understandable as people have had their eye on names for years. All in all, good job, TNT! Emily and hickt0wn 2 Quote

Somewhat recently, I managed to create a four letter name. That was 79 days ago. Really? O.O Hmm, I swear I heard that from somewhere. Oh well. But yes, basically it's usually an elitism thing. There are, of course, other reasons people want them, but I'm pretty sure that's how it started. Quote

I mean, I was around during that time and I can understand the nostalgia, but I might be the only person who honestly thinks that a majority of the converted pets look better. I dunno, maybe it's just my art taste. Quote

I dunno, maybe it's just my art taste. You're not alone. There are a handful of UCs I like (mostly grey or faeries) but that's because they actually look unique. Not solid with wings drawn on. Love the UC faerie yurble or techo for instance. The rest are useless to me. I've been on neo for 10 years or so, I have no desire to own pets that I used to own. Quote
dummydumpty Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 The UC poses were much better. The default "holding something" pose annoys me. That being said, I've lurked a few times on the PC. While I do like shorter names, I'd rather have a pronounceable longer names than an unpronounceable 3-4L name, so I don't get this trend. I remember seeing some RW that I find rather ridiculous (common and uncommon), and people who claim to have a RW/RN, but they're uncommon or misspelled RW/RN. C'mon, haha. ~Xandria 1 Quote
lovedwallflower Posted January 21, 2013 Posted January 21, 2013 I think that if you like a pet - UC / draik / krawk - then you should strive to get one and good luck to you. what annoys me personally is the 'im-so-better' attitude of some users when it comes to others who do not have the status symbol pets. I personally don't mind UCs for instance, but there are very few I'd go crazy for because I like customisation more than I like the UC artwork. As always in life, just live and let live :) hrtbrk, karmacow and Emily 3 Quote

Well I'm glad I'm not alone. Though to go off what dummydumpty said, I hate the converted pets pose of them "holding" things in their hands. I know it's for customisation but it's a little silly. That's my only complaint. Quote
Queen Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 I tend to joke it's their fighting stance. It always looks like they are going to punch something. My draiks always do, anyway :P and I agree 100% about the unpronounceable 4L names...or the really outrageous RWs. People take the RW thing a little far, to be honest. Quote
hickt0wn Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 I agree, Queen. Like my Aisha is named Meliana and I just adore that name and I think she's VWN...but others would argue she's not just because it's not a shorter name. Quote
