So as of today I am putting myself on a diet. The diet is not to lose weight but to be healthy and stay the same size. Here are the things I can and can't eat.

I can eat

Fish

Chicken

Veggies

Rice

Pasta(sparingly)

Candy(only occasionally)

Cheeses

Yogurt

Bread(sparingly)

I can't eat

Red meat

Pork products

Chocolate

So, my question is, have any of you ever been on a diet similar to this? The things I can eat cover all the food groups so I think I'm safe.

Actually you might be better off cutting out candy and eating chocolate sparingly. Dark chocolate has some pretty good health benefits and chocolate in general can get your 'feel good' chemicals going in your brain :) And watch out with your yogurts. Most of the popular brands (Dannon, Yoplait) put a LOT of sugar or artificial sweeteners in their yogurt. Greek yogurt is the healthier choice. Making sure you eat brown rice and whole wheat bread/pasta will also be a health benefit.

As for diets? I've been on a diet almost constantly since I was at least 11. I'm mid-30's now and heavier than ever. So it's good that you're seeing it as a life style change as opposed to a diet. Diet is a four letter word :\

I've heard that dark chocolate has health benefits. Plus candy just makes you sick to your stomach. I actually hate the taste of popular yogurt. It's too runny. I pefer nonfat Greek yogurt. I also like whole wheat bread opposed to white bread(Wonder bread is disgusting). Plus, I exercise on a treadmill for 40 minutes a day and walk the track at school.

Yep, I'd cut out candy completely and look for 61% or higher dark chocolate - it has less sugar and more actual cocoa solids :) Not sure what brands are readily available to you but Lindt is always a good go-to for store-bought chocolate.

I'm a fan of Greek Yogurt and Granola! If you have time to make your own Granola, this recipe is wonderful - sometimes I sub honey for maple syrup and dark brown sugar. Yummy! It'll satisfy your sweet cravings, too.

I don't have any actual advice on healthy eating other than portion control really is key! You can still eat good food - just not a lot at a time. Using olive oil in cooking, avocados instead of mayonnaise, small things like that also help. I've had to put my dad on a small-portion diet and I've had to pull some tricks out of a hat so he doesn't cheat. Oatmeal is a big thing for him, it's filling and full of good stuff, so he always has that in the morning. If you can find five-grain bread, that will also fill you up (try and find one that's made with at least half whole wheat flour). Also, have you tried brown rice? It's less processed than the normal white rice you'll get, therefore more good stuff like fiber is on it - very filling as well so you'll be eating less of it.

Anyway, enough of my food rambling. I can't stop once I start - so um, good luck :) I hope you can keep at it and maintain your goal! ^_^

The problem with me is that whenever I eat, regardless of what it is healthy or not, I feel like I'm going to gain back to 235 pounds(what I used to weigh). You also need to consider how much I exercise. I'm happy weighing 205-215, preferably 210 :)

the reccomended dietary guidelines here (can't remember where i learnt it, probably from the heart foundation) are the half and quarter plate thing, half your plate should be veggies, a quarter protein and the remaining quarter a grain (rice pasta etc)

the heart foundation here reccomends eating an oily fish once a week (oily meaning deep sea, so tuna and salmon are good choices). lean red meat is also a good source of iron and essential amino acids which you need. otherwise dark green vegetables are also going to be high in iron which is necessary for red blood cells.

to be honest i make an effort 3 days out of the week and the rest i'm usually lazy and eat anything. i do exercise morning and evening although i need to up my intensity now (but a bit lazy since my gym membership expired, just doing walks round the block atm (its hot and sticky and i have being uncomfortable) i also have no control when it comes to lollies. i should know better but i generally eat a sweet once a day if not more.. (especially icecream/sorbet) and usually have a died fruit bar in my bag (but its seriously high in sugar...)

good luck with your lifestyle change, i wish you all the best :) let us know how you go? i'm supposed to be doing some health challenge thing, and this reminded me (i signed up and forgot) *goes to check it out now*

Good luck!! Maintaining weight should be easy, especially with the exercise you're doing.

I put myself on a very similar diet this year, but not only to be healthier but to also lose weight, and I'm down 14lbs and feel much better than I used to when I ate nothing but junk and huge proportions. ^^ Basically I switched out white breads/pastas/tortillas to whole grain, cut out pop and junk, and limit red meats and breads. I've made chicken, fish, sweet potatoes, pasta, and fruits the main things I'm allowed to eat, but will also eat anything else homemade every once in a while. At first it was difficult getting used to but well worth it.

Wowee, that is some dedication!

I can't do diets, I fail because food is just wayy to yummy. :P

I don't diet, but occasionally when I choose to eat less, its not a conscious thing - my mind just goes GIRL YOU ARE NOT HUNGRY - I get that for about a week every two or three months. For that week or so, I don't eat recess, lunch, I snack occasionally, I eat small dinners. I just don't feel hungry at all... It's odd, really.

But for a short period two years ago I did a kind of "diet" thing, not a stay healthy, but a eat less. Because I was just eating... a lot and in fact, it was my parents who pointed out I was on the chubby side... so then I cut out recess. In Singapore, during recess, students basically eat lunch, so lunch itself is like a second lunch. What I did for a few (tough!) days was to bring food - and bring less - and stay in class during the break. Eventually I just bought milk every recess - nutritious and filling! - and downed it. After a bit it wasn't really a hard to do thing, I just got used to the littler amount of food. I also took late (and big!) lunches and little or no dinners sometimes.

I didn't realize it until my friend from two years back visited school almost couldn't recognize me, and my aunt couldn't tell it was me - the previous New Year she had very openly declared how fat I was. :P Then I was all "Cool, I lost weight :D " but it wasn't really something I put a whole lot of effort into. The sad thing about that was that I was actually within the healthy BMI range, so I wonder what I used to look like! :P I lost size, but not (much) weight - I can't figure why, though, because I did no exercise. At all. I hate to exercise, and therefore even "fitter and toned!" would never entice me. :P

And now I'm back on crazy mad snacking/ eating, so efforts down the drain! xD I'm right now about 121 pounds - probably heavier, this was at last check! - and standing ta 5 feet 5¾ inches, according to google. xD(1.67m) Yes, us Singaporeans are very short! :P

Personally I focus on trying to eliminate sugars, especially those that are processed. Try and avoid carbs/fuits high in sugar after 6pm, because your body won't burn it and then you'll sleep on it. I also only drink water and tea- I've completely cut out pop, and although I occasionally drink juice or ice tea, those are also cut out for the most part. I understand how it can be frustrating- I eat pretty healthy (in my opinion, and most of the people I know's opinion) and I exercise quite a bit but I can't seem to loose weight. When I get back from my exchange I'm going to focus even more on eating healthy- because I left at a bad time where I just didn't care WHAT I ate. Also, in terms of exercise, you should try and incorporate some weights into your routine- cardio is only so effective. Be careful though, start out slow with cardio and then incorporate weights as you get comfortable- and start out very light- you don't want to hurt your body too much. Protein is always a good option after a work out too :) (I enjoy Chocolate Almond Fudge Clif bars- they sound terribly unhealthy but they aren't actually that bad for you- natural ingredients (no HFCS!) and they have lots of protein. Plus, the usually curve my chocolate craving for the week/day/whatever). I don't have a gym here and I really wish I did- it's too expensive for what I'd use it for though. So now I've taken up outdoor running- but it just doesn't burn as many calories as my usual gym routine.

Lindt is acutally the only chocolate I have at time to time. Dark one. If you get hungry quickly, I'd recommend you a smoothie. I make them myself. But you have to watch out which veggies/fruit you use. We have a big garden, so I mostly use what we grow, if not, I got to a local farmer, who I know I can trust.

I've also heard that green salad with tuna is good for loosing weight :)

I wish you the best of luck! :)

After getting chubby ish post-baby, I've lost 47 lbs in the last two years...

I found what worked for me, is not cutting out ANYTHING fully because else you just crave that thing, I stick to a certain calorie goal every day, which is worked out for me by the website My Fitness Pal. This works out the correct calorie goal for you, if you're trying to lose weight, stay the same etc, gain weight.

It offsets input and output, so if you exercise more, you get more calories to eat, and it adds up all your calories, fat, sugar etc and tells you whether your under or over for the day, it really tells you off if you don't eat over 1200 calories a day!

So if i want chips, I have chips, but I have smaller portions, and then eat really extra healthily for the rest of the day, this was, it doesn't make me grumpy and I don't feel like I'm missing out.

I am SUCH a foodie, and have to cook for a family every day, so eating just salad and stuff is no good for me, but if you're interested, have a look at My Fitness Pal (or there's another one called Livestrong.com), they're a great way to monitor what you are putting into your body, especially for people like us who are on the pc a lot!

Good luck, but be sensible <3

I'm very much a foodie too and I don't think my post about what I'm cutting out and keeping was very sensible. I'm going to try the my fitness pal thing:)

  • 3 weeks later...

Because I haven't been moving around so much lately, I gained some weight, and I've been on a diet. I cut down my carbs intake (no more pasta, rice, etc) and increased high fiber foods. It's helping me feel fuller, without high calorie intake. It's been a month, and I've lost the pounds I put on and more. :-)

Candy you can have time to time, but I wouldn't go overboard with it. ;) I've been on a diet for a few months now. Rice I used to eat a lot, but once I cut it down or didn't have it at all. I could really feel a difference! Best of luck with the diet! :)
