Labor laws say you can start working at 14, but you need to be 15 to handle food. That being said, most places won't hire 14-year-olds and usually want people who are at least 16 (so they're more mature or something). That's the case for Pennsylvania, at least, but I think it's probably the same nation-wide.

I should apply for a job.... *sigh* But I won't. I'll just hope for an awesome scholarship, or there's no way I'm paying for college.

Getting a job isn't really going to pay for college. Trust me, minimum wages after taxes is really low. I just work for a little extra spending money.

But knowing you, you're gonna get a scholarship :P

That law is nation-wide. I've seen requirements for fast food joints. And like I said, I would NEVER work for McDonalds.

Thank you, Will. I certainly hope I do. :D

And of course I don't expect minimum wage to pay for college. Goodness, after Econ class, I hardly expect anything to pay for anything anymore. 0_0 *has a very cynical Econ teacher* Incidentally, we're studying labor laws and suchlike this unit.

Thanks Bean. ^_^ Right now I'm not so worried about getting a scholarship as getting the scholarship I really need for the particular college I really really want to attend. They give out 4 of this scholarship each year, and it's full-ride. Meals, board, tuition, everything. And it totals to, oh, $180,000?

Wow, that's not that many scholarships. Good luck!

Divya you'll probably get a scholarship too. 1400+ on the SATs Freshman year is pretty promising :laughingsmiley:

I doubt I could get a scholarship to JHU, which is my first choice right now. It's hard because my parents insist that I go to one of the nation's top colleges, and it's just unlikely that I'll get a scholarship to those. A full one, that is.

Thanks Will! :D

And I know what you mean. My parents are like that too. It will be hard getting in, let alone getting a scholarship.

I wonder how much MIT would cost. That's where I want to go.

It's roughly 38k for the tuition, 11k for the room and board. Another 3k for books and personal expenses, and multiply that for 4 years, you're looking at $208,000 for your full 4 years.

Edit: Yeah, it's gonna be rough. And it's like good grades isn't exactly gonna cut it either. I wonder if getting into those colleges is even going to make financial sense for me.

Will, are your parents Ivy-League-only parents? I have a few friends whose parents do that too. I'm really glad mum is okay with me not going to an Ivy. I mean, I could - I've got the grades for it and stuff - but I don't want to. I've fallen in love with a little SC college called Furman University. :wub_anim: And it's close to Ivy status. Furman's chem department is fourth in the nation, after 3 Ivys.

EDIT: Johns-Hopkins? Excellent school! I really hope you can get enough of a scholarship to go. =]

Well, there is Financial Aid. Only it is hard having your loan around your neck for the rest of your life...

livvy, Furman's looks so cool! Just googled it. :wub_anim:

Well, I better step it up if I want to make it there.

Bean, you're smart. I'm certain you're going to get some kind of scholarship to whatever college you apply to.

EDIT: I KNOW! Isn't it gorgeous? You should see the whole campus... BE-A-UTIFUL! And they're constantly making changes and stuff to make it more energy efficient... it's way cool.

Yeah, Johns Hopkins is a great medical school. Honestly I haven't visited too many schools yet, but at the moment it's my first choice.

But yeah, my parents want me to go to an Ivy League school, and if not, just one that's really prestigious. But even the good ones aren't good enough. I hear my friends get excited over Penn State and to my parents it's the equivalent to going to a 2-year community college x_x

Furman College looks pretty cool though too. I've heard it's one of the top liberal arts colleges in the nation. Hope you get in

Um, what exactly is paying off? :eh:

Sorry, I'm kinda out of it right now. Might be because I'm stressing over German homework right now. I've gotten so bad at that language after last year. It was when we learned a ton of new grammar and stuff like that really fast and now it's just a jumbled mess in my mind x_x

Mhm! The campus is how I first considered Furman. We had to do a college research essay in 9th grade, and when I was choosing my two in-state colleges, I remembered the gorgeous campus at Furman (I had been there for something quite a while ago, but have no idea what.) After doing the research for the essay, I concluded that, of the 6 colleges I'd researched, Furman was the best fit. Then this past summer I spent a week at the Summer Scholars program on campus. You know how they say when you visit the right college, you'll feel a spark/connection/right? Well, they lied. But after you spend some time on the right campus, you'll realize that you can't imagine spending the next four years of your life anywhere else. :wub_anim: /hopeless romantic.

EDIT: Seriously? Penn State is a great college! And they offer really good scholarships.

And yeah, I totally understand. x_x I lost a lot of French after we introduced a bunch of different tenses.

Will, their pushiness! It is definitely working if you are aiming for JHU!

And livvy, that is so sweet. And I think that you will get into Furman. :)

Will, I just remembered that you're Chinese. (Chinese, right? I think that's what it was.) That kind of explains the push for Ivy schools. (I hope that doesn't sound awful.)

@Bean: Even if their pushiness is working, that doesn't make it a good thing. Being pushed to do college stuff is stressful. x_x The whole concept can be unimaginably overwhelming.

Oh goodness gracious. I was using that as a compliment showing that I think that Will works hard and his high aims make sense to his talent. Sheesh.

If there's ever a need for that last parenthesis, I wouldn't say it. XD
