Do Video Games Make People Violent?

Naamah D.

Recommended Posts

They don't with me but, people differ. I play games like Mortal Kombat but that doesn't mean I'm a violent, terrible person. This subject brings me back to a time when I was talking about a video game(Mortal Kombat)and this happened.

Nahemah: So I learned how to pull off this move in Mortal Kombat Unchained.

Friend: That's wicked cool!

Staff member: I seriously can't imagine you playing Mortal Kombat...

Nahemah: Why?

Staff member: You're a girl, your gentle you need to play games with babies and animals.....

Not only was that sexist. but I had to tell him "All because I'm playing a gory violent video game doesn't mean I'm violent or a bad person"

So what do you think?

Over time it does I would suppose, people especially people under 10 are a lot more likely to be influenced than a 33 year old. People might think if violence is fun in games, and try it in real life, also I must admit that I do play violent games occasionally, though i have never thought about doing in-game things IRL.

I think that people nowadays are less violent than before. We are still humans and all of us can't be all fluffy and sweet. They are violent persons and it's always going to be like that, with or without video games.

Sometimes you hear some stories about a guy who did crazy things because of a violent game ... Seriously ? Don't you think that he was already fragile/instable BEFORE that and the game was just the trigger ?

I'm confused by your statment. When you say he was already unstable and the game was a trigger are you saying that he was violent in the first place and the game was a trigger? Or are you just flat out saying violent video games are a trigger for everyone?

Yup, I think violent video games CAN make people more violent. Well, not those people who are stable but those on the younger side like below 13.

It is quite a shock to think that even some girls play Mortal Kombat 'cause as a kid, I despised that game very much. Its full of fighting, blood and broken bones. Ughh. I know some people like it but I personally think its a very violent game for a kid. I mean, have you seen what Tara does? She just throws those people into a well of spike, and of course there's blood!

So yeah, according to me, violent games like Mortal Kombat CAN make people(below 15) very violent.

I don't see how it's shocking that girls play MK. I'm also 18 years old and know better, so to speak. Now, let's talk FPS games. Games like Left 4 Dead, I don't see the big deal. Your shooting a ZOMBIE. It's really no different than Carinval of Terror on Neopets if you ask me.

And trust me, if there ever was a zombie apocalypse, you'd want to learn how to defend yourself LOL.

I think that it can make children violent. Not because of the content, but more so they can't beat the game :laughingsmiley: My little brother has a hard time playing this game on Cartoon Network and he screams at it and slams the mouse. We give him time-outs and stuff, but yeah, kill those habits before they stay.

As for violent/mature games, I don't think kids should be playing them. Some kids actually do what they see. More mature kids are able to handle the content though, regardless of gender.

As for my video games of choice, Mortal Combat is not for me :worried: Too much blood.

The truth about this is.......if your going to go out and steal a car, pick up a prostitute, kill her, then take your money back.........You probably had some serious issues before you ever picked up the controller and played Grand Theft Auto. The game may have acted as a "Trigger", but if the game wasn't available, or violent movies, etc. If your that disturbed, a bad day at school/work could have just as well acted as a trigger.

Parents are quick to lay the blame on video games, TV, Movies, Wrestling, and Music. It's a lot easier than saying "Well...if I had of paid more attention to my kid, I may have saw the signs that this was building up." I watch some of the most graphic movies out there. I'm a huge MMA fan, I grew up with wrestling (Grew out of it as well), and I've played about every violent video game that came out. I was big into ICP and Marilyn Manson as a teenager...yet I to this day have managed not to go on a killing spree, become a huge drug lord, or anything like that. I've gotten in fights sure, but never once seriously hurt anyone.

Exactly! You're 18 and you won't get violent. Maybe their will be a slight changes for SOME people who are 18. In this game, Left 4 Dead there is blood, yes? Not all the girls play games with shooting, killing and blood. I'm not saying that girls shouldn't play it but when I used to play such games I almost died myself. Its shocking 'cause I never get used to seeing such violence in games for KIDS. When I played Mortal Kombat I had nightmare for days.

Mortal Kombat kind of reminds me of the movie, Resident Evil(the first one). There are some parts which are like so scary 'looking' and all but the movie is good.

I think it depends entirely on the person; yes, violent games will have some sort of influence somehow, but it's not always going to make a player violent in nature. Personally, I can tolerate a bit more violence and gore without cringing or being sick, but I can't go as far as splatter or scenes where it's just overdone. I avoid playing games like Mortal Kombat or FPS; I just don't see what's so fun about them. I like something that's just got a little more, like Okami; it's the only action game I really like, not in the least because it managed to make me cry a little at the end (and that's never happened before).

I also see this debate in sort of three different ways:

1 ) Violent/Mature games make the player more violent: I don't really think so if they were raised to think not, but they might have a certain influence. Such as guns kill people really easy. I get mad at certain people. Why don't they just leave me alone? Hey, I have a gun! It might lead to that kind of thinking, but not actions.

2 )Video games make players violent:

a ) If they can't beat the game, yes they can get very physical of cranky. I don't know if they might get out of hand, but they could break stuff.

b ) If the players get hacked, they can become violent. Oh, how many times have I seen this. People get violent when they get hacked, and I understand. You get connected to your game and you feel lost without it. People get violent and break stuff or get depressed or other ways of coping with getting hacked.

In short, Violent/Mature rated games, difficult games, or getting hacked can all lead to violent players.

At the same time I can argue that for me personally. I can be having a horrible day. Had a bad day at work, having a horrible day at home. Frustrated, annoyed, and generally fed up. I can sit down, and put in a GTA game, run around for an hour or so senselessly murdering people on the street, turn the game off and instantly feel better. So I could argue that these "Violent" video games actually help to get rid of some of the aggression in life.

There was a case on the news about a teen who shot his friend over a video game a few years back here in Louisville. Everyone was quick to point a finger at the video game industry in general. Fact is, that kid has severe anger issues. If it wasn't the two of them playing a video game, it could have just as easily been a game of basketball that didn't go his way.

I brought this up in your other topic XD

Okay, well, it does and it doesn't. I'm not very huge on 'killing' games, since the only games I play are nintendo and they don't have many. I like Zelda, SSBB, Metroid.. but no shooting games. I get shaky when I play them, knowing if I'm able to shoot someone in a game, how much does that justify that I can't do it in real life?

I always hear people at my school, usually boys, saying "I'm going to kill you!" all the time. I hear girls do it to, and I'm guillty of saying something along that line. And though we do not mean that we are going to literally end your life, it's just a popular form of threat that is just a joke. But, still school officials send kids to the office when they hear it, and you are suspended for suggesting violence.

I think it's honestly your own personal decision to make sure digital pixels don't effect your real-life actions.

wow really? THE STAFF REALLY SAID THAT!?!?!?! wow, talka bouta sexist jerk... I mean SRSLY. You could be a tomboy! I'mma tomboy. I LIKE left 4 dead. ( my bro and i used to playing. I loved it when Christmas came around. GINGERBREAD MAN ZOMZ! ) LOL. but anyway, i don't think video games could do that. I think it must have a been a problem building up inside for years, Then video games triggered it. Or just a bad day. It's just triggers.

Uh, can't say I've ever gunned someone down irl, no. Nor have I ever unleashed a rain of fire on the subway.

Seriously though, I can't believe people still think girls don't play ~violent games. Sure, I like tame RPGs with minimal bloodshed, but I also enjoy shooting people in the face. And I'm a pacifist (in theory, but anyway, that's not the point). I've never even gotten into a fight, and I don't own a gun.

Forthe person speaking before about how people are less violent now, here is a link to a video that you may find interesting.

Steve Pinker TED talk

I do not feel that video games make people violent UNLESS someone immerses themself in one to an unhealthy level. Someone who plays a violent game 12 hours a day with limited social interaction may have a tendancy towards violence based on the fact that the game has become their only outlet. A child who plays violent video games will not develop a problem with violence simply based on limited game playing.

No.

...What do you mean, my posts have to be at least seven words long?

In all seriousness, though, they can somewhat. The important thing is to supervise your kids if you're going to let them play, and let them now that the stuff they see in the video games should not happen in real life. If your seven-year-old sees the only consequence of slicing off people's heads being "You gained a level!" then he won't understand how little things in real life hurt. But adults playing video games already know this stuff. Teenagers know it. Most people by the time they've turned 13 have gotten in some accident and realize, "Ouch! Man! This stuff HURTS in real life!"

Also, young and impressionable kids see the cool weapons in video games/movies and think, "Oh, boy, that's so cool! I want one!" And if their parent is an enabler, someone could easily get hurt.

In the end, don't be stupid, and all should be well.

i think this is ridiculous and it annoys me everytime i hear its just the media scaremongering and governments and parents using games as a scapegoat to try to stop people blaming them for whats happening to kids and people in general.

I mean there was major crimes alot much worse then things that happen today and that was years before games i mean im sure hitler never played command and conquer before he decided mass genocide and conquering the world was the way to go and im equally sure jack the ripper hadn't run around on grand theft auto before he decided to kill the five prostitutes. I've played games such as resident evil, mortal kombat etc since i was about 7 and i don't have violent tendencies in fact i am the opposite i try to diffuse situations rather then rise to them unlike friends of mine who have never played video games and are happy to get into fights.
