Naamah D.
I've been considering a break from Neopets and may just have to take one because my mom is going to start needing her computor again, my laptop doesn't run games on Neopets(I can still log on just no games), and have to wait for my old one to get fixed. I'm also feeling guilty for playing Neopets due to past events. I really enjoy being on Neopets but I'm starting to consider a possible hiatus. The main source of this wanting to take a a break is guilt and feeling childish for playing with virtual pets. The thing is, is that I really like my virtual pets. Good stress relief. So, is it worth quitting/hiatus all because of guilt and feeling kiddish?
Mela
You could always stop playing for a period of time, and see how you feel. If you feel you want to come back then come back. Ive taken a hiatus here and there. Oh and if you do take one, heres some advice. Write down as much account information as you can, especially your birthday. I forgot my account information and I lost a really old account :( Good Luck in the future :)
Leila
Very good tip, Mela. That's how I lost a lot of my older accounts as well. Can I ask, who is it that is making you consider giving up Neopets? Is it because you feel other people are judging you based on playing, or are you judging yourself? Because giving something you love up to appease other people never works out. But if you feel you've "outgrown" (or should have outgrown) your virtual pets, definitely take Mela's advice and take a break. If you miss it enough, you'll come back. (I always do. :))
ahtaxotep
Another option is to just reduce the amount of time you spend on Neopets/how dedicated you are to it. So maybe just log on once a day to do your dailies and check news posts or quickly catch up with your Neofriends or whatever, just keeping in touch with the game without leaving. You might find that, removed from the feverish obsession of getting all the avatars or getting the perfect pet etc, you really have outgrown Neopets and don't need to play anymore. But on the other hand, if you realise you do still really like it, you'll still be 'in the loop' and not missed out on any huge NP events :)
Emily
There's no reason you should feel "guilty" for playing because it's childish. I would go so far as to say there's more players in their late teens and up than children. Just look at the TDN community. We have college students, professionals, high school students and everyone in between. You shouldn't feel guilty for doing something you like. If it's actually interfering with your life though, then I would say it's time to cut back a little, lol.
Nika
If you're looking for reassurance, there's lots of old threads where people mention their ages. I'm in college but I know a lot of people have graduated and have even mentioned really cool jobs. One of my neofriends has grandchildren, so I'm a big believer in the idea that Neopets is for any age. Cutting back can work--during school I only invest in stock and do dailies for avatars :) But I wouldn't stop doing anything at all because of what other people think though! Batman
In all honesty you shouldn't do things because of what others think of you. If you enjoy playing neopets do it for yourself. That is my moto. Oh and yeah my mom even plans. I find it to be a great way to wind down from a long day. Moral of my story, if it makes you happy why stop? Lydia Trebond
And I just lost my long reply. Oh boy let's see if I can recreate it. Are you feeling guilty for playing Neopets because you're worried about what other people might think? I would think of games you can think of that you can play without using flash. Solitaire, Pyramids, 21, NQ and NQII, if you've got an account with 13+ availability, dice-a-roo is also available and profitable for the food and other prizes from the later dice (green and yellow I think). Also, the Random Events are profitable. So then the question becomes, are you going to feel guilty for leaving your pets in the Neolodge for weeks/months at a time? I don't know how long of a hiatus you are talking about, but I think you mentioned something about that in an earlier thread. I celebrated my 20th birthday recently, and my boyfriend is about to celebrate his 23rd, and we both still play. It is very good stress relief. Don't feel pressured into doing anything. chero
As most people have said above, don't worry too much what others might think if they knew you played~ How often are you like "sorry guys, just gotta do this 'n that on Neopets" while they are over at your place? I'd assume not very/if ever? Maybeeeee it's getting a bit too obsessive if that is the case though :P I was introduced to Neopets within the first year of it releasing (seems like ageesss ago now!) and was in primary school... now im studying to be a primary school teacher and in that 11 or so year period have "quit" half a dozen times... then returned... as i am now~ It's a little fun on the side. I do admit to there being times where i spend just that few extra hour...s on Neopets when i really should be doing something else, but it's a moderation thing; little bits here, little bits there, and we are all happy and get the best of all worlds. Zexxa
I have been down this road before. I thought I was too old for neo and quit several times. I am 24, married, and a college graduate. The site was initially created for college students if I remember right. The site has since been revamped to be suitable for all ages. Many of my neofriends are older than me and play while they are at work or whatever. It's actually no different than facebook in my opinion. I can chat with my neofriends, play silly games to occupy my time, read interesting stories, and collect pixels. I'm wondering about your laptop. Why is it unable to play flash games? Most modern computers can play flash games. If it is a speed issue, I can bet that you can speed it up enough to play. (Download and run CCleaner, Malwarebytes, and a virus scan). Also, some of the games I enjoy are the php games(solitaire, pyramids, etc) so games aren't 100% out for you. Overall, don't let anyone make you feel self-conscious about it! Also, try not to post that you are on a hiatus if you choose to go on one. And, if you think about it, log on once in awhile(every 90 days or so) so that no nasty hackers mistake your account for inactive and try to steal it. Also, if you have it linked to a hotmail or a yahoo that you don't use regularly, change the email address to gmail or one that you check regularly as that is another way that hackers get your account! I hate to see you go, but you must do what is best for you! Hope to see you back tho!
Naamah D.
Thanks for the advice everyone. I won't be going on hiatus. Quitting or not playing because of what other people have to say is not a valid reason. Play Neopets and be happy!
