Well, there goes the results gong for day five - this is AA, bringing you our usual daily report direct from the Colosseum, and what a day it's been! Perhaps not an especially intense day for many teams on the field, but today has certainly been the most crucial match so far for three of the teams in the Cup. Terror Mountain, Virtupets and Tyrannia all walked onto the field as underdogs last year, but this year all three teams have shrugged off that dusty old outfit, striding out proudly to claim comfortable positions in the first and second tier right from day one.

For the Tyrannian Fossils, today's match against Kreludor was the moment of truth, a chance for them to finally prove to all of Neopia that they were here to stay as a tier one contender. While analysts and fans from all quarters are still hotly debating the conclusiveness of today's outcome, the results themselves are telling: after a hard fought match, Kreludor and Tyrannia were dead-even on the Yooyuball field. Tyrannian Team Captain Loryche and her fearsome squad of forwards kept up the pressure on Kreludor all day long, but Derlyn Fonnet's well-practiced team managed to slip in enough goals to keep pace with the Fossils. Stellar performances from both teams stoked the fires even higher in Make Some Noise, with neither teams' fans managing to cheer loudly enough to drown out the other (but nevertheless setting a tournament record for the most cases of critical ear damage handled on a single day). Team Kreludor did emerge the victor in Shootout Showdown, but as expected the Tyrannians stayed on top easily when it came to Slushie Slinger, leaving the overall match at a draw.

While they probably didn't get the decisive result they were hoping for, most Tyrannian fans are in a celebratory mood nevertheless, as is evidenced by the roaring business still being done at the slushie stands. Most analysts agree that after today's match, Tyrannia has clearly established itself, if not as a well-rounded emerging powerhouse, then at least as a powerful second-tier contender.

"Well done to Tyrannia!" acknowledged Coco Metrone of Team Kreludor, taking a few minutes off to recover from the exhausting match. "The team played really well, and I'm really impressed by what they were able to come up with to counter our usual strategies. We're definitely looking forward to meeting again in round two."

Over on field 6A, the players coming off the match between Team Terror Mountain and Team Virtupets were no less exhausted. Both teams had already proven their potential on the field, but this was the face-off that would decide which of them would be able to declare itself the prime contender for this year's 'fledgeling powerhouse' spot. That title looks like it may well go to Team Virtupets this year, as the Robots rolled off the field with an outstanding Yooyuball victory, and a win in Make Some Noise as well. The Chillers might have been outmatched, but they certainly weren't daunted, and they managed to come away with Slushie Slinger and Shootout Showdown under their belts, still well within reach of a tier one position.

"You win some, you lose some," conceded Terror Mountain Team Captain Prytariel, "this is the Altador Cup after all - it happens. We're doing far better than anyone would have expected us to at the start of this season, and I'm not going to ask any more from my team than that. Nobody scales a mountain in one leap, not unless you want to come crashing back down again right afterwards. We're on your way up - just you wait!"

Waiting may not be what's on the minds of the teams directly on Terror Mountain's tail however. Meridell and Brightvale both bounded ahead with near sweeps over their opponents, straining to put more distance between themselves and the tier two hopefuls below them. The Brightvale Wizards blasted past the Lost Desert Mummies in Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, losing only Shootout Showdown to the Mummies' determined efforts. Meanwhile, Team Meridell hammered Kiko Lake across the board, scoring victories in Yooyuball, Make Some Noise, and Shootout Showdown. The hardy Kikos weren't about to let anyone hit them with a second sweep however, and their focused efforts in Slushie Slinger brought the side game to a draw.

Elsewhere in tier three, Team Shenkuu met with yet more difficulty on the Yooyuball field, unable to pull off the stealthy stratagems that worked so well on Brightvale against the watchful Roos. Roo Island was all too happy to take advantage of the resulting holes in Shenkuu's defence, coming away with a Yooyuball victory, and a win in Slushie Slinger to boot. Shenkuu's fans kept their foot in the door when it came to the remaining side games however, out-cheering the Rooligans and bringing Slushie Slinger to a draw.

Mystery Island and the Haunted Woods both struggled against their far more highly ranked opponents. The Krawk Island Pirates were back in form after yesterday's dousing from Team Maraqua, sailing past the Zombies in both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown, although they weren't quite swift enough to break the tie in Slushie Slinger, and ended up losing Make Some Noise to the Haunted Woods' deafening chorus of supporters. The Citadel fared slightly better against Mystery Island, taking both Yooyuball and Make Some Noise, and drawing the remaining side games.

It was a battle in the skies (figuratively speaking, as the committee still bans actual flight during matches) between underdogs Altador and Faerieland yesterday, as Suns and the Faeries both looked to soar clear of the lower tiers. This time around, it was the Faeries who emerged the clear winners, gliding away with all but Slushie Slinger, where Altador's fans buckled down and managed to secure a victory.

Heading back down to earth (and below sea level), Maraqua and Moltara came away from their clash bathed in quite a bit of steam. The final result was a sweep in Maraqua's favour, but no-one can say the Moltarans didn't give Team Maraqua a match to remember, with Moltara's Team Captain Aldric Beign moments away from evening the score when the clock finally ran out.

One of our reporters managed to slip past Maraqua's tight security after the match to have a brief word with Maraquan Team Captain Elon Hughlis. The top scorer was uncharacteristically sporting, albeit seemingly tired and distracted, in his remarks.

"Hmm? Oh yeah, Moltara played well today. Kudos to them. Good team. Great match."

The reporter in question is currently being treated at Altador's General Hospital for fourth degree plasma burns, where it is reported that she is in critical (but thankfully stable) condition.

Well, that's it for the day's matches. Looking ahead to the next day, it seems like things might get a little easier on analysts, with enough data available to make most match outcomes at least a tad more straightforward. However, many observers are eyeing yet another match between a pair of rising stars: Team Terror Mountain will be facing off against Team Brightvale. Both teams are hanging on to the lower end of tier two for the moment, and neither is willing to give a single millimetre just yet.

Best of luck to all teams! This is AA, reporting for The Daily Neopets, signing off.

Aww, what? Lost again?

Hmm... Maybe we should start burning the other players more often now...whistle.gif

Just kidding! Anyway, great job Maraqua. The experience will certainly help us against the salty sea swashbucklers.

Very well played to you too. ;) Do pass on our compliments and a solid Yooyuball match to our old war rivals if you can. :P

I must say though, the burn joke was in somewhat bad taste seeing as one of our reporters was just shot with an AX plasma weapon. :eh:

Only one sentence on our near-domination of MI? T-T

Anyway, I see nothing suprising in these resulkts except maybe thw KI/HW match.

Anyway, good job all teams, FL in particular. I'm rooting for you guys this year. ^^

And theres only two good match-ups today.

RI/DC

and

HW/VP.

MQ and SK might be interesting too, altough theres no doubt in my mind that MQ will win.

Oh... right. Pardon me for my bad timing. Guess I was just being careless.

I saw that coming, I knew it would be a clean sweep against the Magmas. In fact I got a bit excited when I saw Moltara was the opponent yeasterday, I was thinking "Oh boy! Easy match!" And since I had finals the next day, I didn't play because I knew the Mermaids would do well without my help. I had to get work done anyway.

But today, I go up against my former team. I expect at least a couple wins...I'm playing for sure tonight. I hope I can still achieve an All Star rank without YYB, but at the rank I'm going now it doesn't seem possible...

I will say that I am very impressed with Tyrannia and Virtupets. They've started slow in the past, and look at them now! :D

I'll admit I might be a little scared going up against you Cavemen and Robots!

Maraqua bring it on we not scared of u and will defy the daily predecrtion says like we always do . But gd luck

That's the spirit. ;) There are no set results in this tournament, so GLHF!

Well, was it really that surprising? :P

There are three teams left that have no YYB wins. One is Lost Desert. sad02.gif All I can do is keep calm and carry on, though I have to say our side game wins are totally random at this point.

A general assessment of LD's composition still gives it some of the best recovery potential of any cup winner - don't give up just yet!

Oh... right. Pardon me for my bad timing. Guess I was just being careless.

Well hey, at least we aren't whacking each other with benches any more (unlike in the practice rounds). xD

As I read this, I note something in our losses:

Why is it that we always lose because of a last minute lag? I bet that clock hates us on purpose!angry.gif

But I guess it shows what potential we have. That's how I interpret it, at least.

Well, you could say it's one of the hallmarks of a rapidly developing, but inexperienced team. It takes a while for them to get a feel for their opponents' play style and put together a game plan to overcome it effectively. As the team spends more time on the field, this process will get quicker, and with time they'll even be able to keep pace with opponents adapting strategies multiple times during a single match.

Either that or I'm just lacking creativity. :P

It almost was. MI is a decent YYB team. Either way though... Only one sentence for 2 wins and 2 draws? T-T

MI is a stellar YYB team when they play in top form, but that's something that we don't see too often, sadly. :( Really the focus in these reports is on 'interesting' matches, and that's a rather subjective point. But hey, congrats. ;)
