The First Olympics where held in Greece. They were held in Olympia (hence the name Olympics). They began in the late 8th Century

I seem to recall that they had wrestling, discus and a race where all the men ran in armor. Only "free" men were able to compete (meaning no slaves and no women)

I did this in History last year :D

EDIT: A number between 1 and 10? I pick 8 :D By the way, congrats Metroid

The Olympic Games originally began in 776 BC, Olympia, Greece.

A popular legend surrounding the creation of the Olympics game is as followed:

The Olympic stadium and the surrounding building were created by Heracles as an honor to his father, Zeus. A 'stadion' was a distance that he created by basically walking in a straight line for 400 strides. This myth is why a modern stadium is 400 meters in circumference length.

Of course, there are a ton of other myths revolving around the creation of the Olympic games. This one is just my favorite for some reason.

Speaking of stadion, one particular event was the stadion race.

The contestants basically had to run about the length of a stadium.

Also, winners of an event would receive an olive branch, fame, and usually large amounts of money.

(History at school sure packs on the homework and classwork.)

Sorry Zac, I forgot to remind you XD.

Ahh close call guys! I'll read the answers after I send the items to Zac.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Okay, I hope you guys agree with this decision because, it has been very hard to pick a winner. I have chosen Meeptroid as the winner because, he spent a while posting his answer; however, as Loocem and DOOM posted at the same time I have decided to do the following:

Meeptroid: Because you're the original winner, you can pick your number from our Potions Shelf.

Loocem and DOOM: You will both get a consolation prize (not junk nor something cheap) because you also put an effort. Edit your posts and pick a number between 1-10.

Congrats everyone! And as a reminder, Meeptroid because you're the original winner, you can't answer the next question.

I will send the prizes to Loocem, DOOM tomorrow and Metroid when he posts his number.

Next question will be up tomorrow at ANY time. I'm trying to post at different times during the day or night so everyone gets a chance. It really can be at ANY time. Good luck!

EDIT: I need someone to post here so that I can post the question any time without having to double post. Thanks!

A man named Hans Lipperhey invented the telescope. He was born in Wesel, Germany and made his home in Middleburg, part of the Zeeland province in the Netherlands. He was married there in 1594, and became a citizen in 1602. He was a spectacle-maker by trade. Many people think that Galileo invented it but they are sadly mistaken.

There are many recorded attempts throughout history to make a telescope, however it is Hans Lippershey who is credited with the development of the first telescope, in 1608. Born in Wesel, Germany he lived most his life in Middleburg, in the Zeeland Province in the Netherlands. A spectacle maker, Lippershey applied for a patent for the device. Others have claimed they were first but as he was the first one to apply for a patent he is therefore credited as the telescope's inventor.

The telescope as we know it today is the result of centuries of fine tuning, ingenuity and innovation. The first known patent application was filed by a Dutch spectacle maker, Hans Lippershey, in 1608. Lippershey's telescope consisted of a positive lens at one end of a long, thin tube, and a negative lens at the other. It was used not in astronomy, but to observe things a long distance away (he had intended it for the Dutch military). His patent was not granted, as others (also spectacle makers) claimed the invention.

The most historically significant of the early telescopes was Galileo's model, which established the Copernican system of heliocentrism (as opposed to geocentrism, the accepted theory at the time). He improved upon the Dutch design after learning about it in 1609 (but never seeing it), raising from the 3 power instrument to instruments that were 8, 20 and 30 power.

Many other scientists contributed to what is now the modern telescope - the Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope - popular in amateur astronomy because of its small form. The Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope was invented by Bernhard Schmidt in 1930 and incorporates a spherical primary mirror and a corrector plate which (surprisingly enough) corrects spherical aberration - the skewing of an image as a result of the spherical primary mirror. The telescope is co-named Cassegrain because it incorporates parts of it: namely the convex secondary mirror, a perforated primary mirror and a focal plane.

edit: hurrah, prolixity. I think I'll go for 11. Thanks, Ellie. ^_^

We have Good news and Bad news.

Bad News

I'm sadly to inform you Loocem that you have been disqualified. As I stated on my first post, you CANNOT copy and paste from a website. You can use websites as reference, but you have to reword things! Meaning, write the answer in your own words. People informed me about this matter and I have triple checked. As you can read on my first post, the penalty for this is a disqualification.

Good News

Isabel and Eric did a great job! But, I have chosen Eric for posting such a well written 3-paragraph answer! Eric, pick a number and edit your post! Make sure you read the list of numbers that have been picked!

Our first Bonus Question winner is of course, Xepha!

Here's an article about the elevator project. It's very interesting!

It takes a French speaker to answer a grammar question ;p

The word whether doesn't need to be followed by an "or" because the sentence can express explicitly or implicitly the possibilities.

Example :

I can't say whether I will be able to visit Paris by December 2008.

Implicitly, it means that I don't know if I will be able to visit Paris OR not. But my sentence is still correct.

Edit : I'm picking number 21
