I once read that it was supposed to be Krakatoa erupting in the background and causing "the scream," but I can't recall exactly. Hope you get lots of votes for the CC. I think you are right, though, that the judges probably go with the first instance of seeing a particular idea. Tena and I often seem to hit on the same ideas for captions.
