Hi! Goomy's Thoughts is an idea I've been thinking about for a long while. I thought I would do on this article on this website once a week, showing how Neopets compare to the real world, and anything what happens that relates to the real world, so with that introduction, here is the article!

~ Article I: Does Neopets exhibit real governments? ~

Neopets is just a playful, innocent website that does not compare to the real world right?

Wrong.

Neopets has a dark side, showing very real world governments that compare to real countries today. In the "innocent" world of Neopets, you notice real-world governments such as totalitarianism, monarchies, federalism, anarchy and socialism. Let's begin with totalitarianism.

Totalitarianism is shown well through Darigan Citadel and Virtupets. Darigan Citadel, an island off the mainland of Meridell, is run by a ruthless, implausible ruler, Lord Darigan. Lord Darigan does not let you visit, talk or even see him, and he names the Citadel before him. Lord Darigan can be compared to the pigs, mostly Napoleon, from the book Animal Farm as Darigan has protectors which do not allow you to see him, and hypothetically if you speak to him the wrong way, you would get attacked, just as Napoleon would do. Also, do you notice how there is only one shop in the entire citadel? This can be assumed that Darigan did not allow many shops, and that he has total control over anything that occurs in the world. Now let’s visit Virtupets. Virtupets, as Darigan Citadel, is run by a supreme ruler Dr. Sloth. Dr. Sloth, as the official Neopets guide book of Virtupets says "[he] plan back in Y2 to turn every Neopet on the whole of Neopia into a mutant. However, things did not work out as Sloth had hoped" (Neopets). From then, he has ease up with his total control over everything, but he still does not allow many things, and the space station still has weapons in the open, i.e. Lever of Doom, making the citizens of Virtupets fearing him, and not let them start up a revolution. You can compare Darigan Citadel to North Korea, while Virtupets is a like a modern day China or the past Soviet Union, as China has SIZs, or Special Industrial Zones where foreign companies are allowed to build and grow things. This correlates to Virtupets, as Dr. Sloth has allowed an arcade to grow and flourish for money.

Next, monarchies, monarchies are littered through the various worlds, but the main two are Meridell and Brightvale. When both King Hagan and King Skarl were young, their families owned both Meridell and Brightvale, and when they and their hatred grew, the two split into Meridell and Brightvale. Monarchies today include Spain, and Canada. Brightvale would most likely compare to Spain, while Meridell is more like Saudi Arabia. Spain is a developed country, with wealth spread around the country, while Saudi Arabia has a rich government but many, but not all poor people. A Monarchy is characterized by a king and a semi-open market. So both Meridell and Brightvale are great examples of Monarchies.

Moreover, federalism is shown through Neopia Central. A federalist government is characterized by an open market. Neopia Central is littered with shops and stores, and there is no one ruler. Various neopets own shops, and do you ever notice that no one has been revealed as a ruler of Neopia Central? It may be assumed that Neopia Central changes its "president" and it is unimportant for TNT to update their ruler so often. A good example of Neopia Central in the real world is The United States or Hong Kong, as people are able to create their own ideas and shops without much struggle.

Finally, we go to anarchy. Kreludor shows a great example of anarchy, as Orange Grundos run the moon, while there is no real leader or regulations. There are few shops, and very little live here. There are no real life situations that correlate to Kreludor.

Neopets is not just a friendly, innocent game where you play flash games for fake currency, but real life situations if you analyze the descriptions of various worlds.

I really like the idea of having articles like this being posted weekly. I find things like this to be quite interesting and I never though about the similarities to Neopets and the real world.
