HomuraAkemiTheHero
On Thursday I signed up to be in the school orchestra for next year. Although it was a bit delayed I'm happy they rescheduled the pre-sign ups. Also there's another yay! Thankfully my aunt used to play the violin but she quit and moved on to the piano and since it's been sitting around I could use it instead of getting a rental one. Also if anyone has ever played the violin is there any tips for playing such as holding the violin or the bow and maybe some tips for reading sheet music? I haven't really played any musical instruments before so i'm clueless. Angeló
Shelley
I used to play the flute from 5th grade until I graduated high school. I really enjoyed it but wish I had joined my school's flute club (yes, we actually have a flute club) or the orchestra. One of my friends at college plays the flute and I always go to her concerts. My mom plays violin and I used to play it from time to time. I wasn't very good and I found the violin extremely hard. I Could play a few scales, but I just found it really uncomfortable to hold and I couldn't get the bow from bouncing on the strings haha. I'm just going to stick to my flute. I've always been bad at string instruments haha hanalways
hanalways
String instruments are definitely tough! I played an assortment of instruments, starting with the piano and clarinet. I got a scholarship into college with my oboe though, although I quit band in college during high school it was one of my best memories was hanging out with the band kids. The best advice I can give is practice at least 10 minutes a day, every day. Even if you don't know anything now, give yourself a year and look back. At the beginning just work on good form of holding the violin and feeling how the bow is used on it. Good luck, band is so much fun! :) HomuraAkemiTheHero
cartoon_dreamer
hanalways is right! I don't have violin advice but learning guitar was something that I had to force myself to do every single day, after a couple of weeks you get into a routine and it'll come naturally! (Wake up, brush teeth, practice for a bit, eat breakfast, go to school)

I'm probably going to do more than 10 since the homework is to practice playing the violin in general and at the end of every week we are suppose to play one of the 4 songs that we learned that week from the teacher's choice. Novelista
I don't condone violins. (Violence. Get it? No one's beat me to it! :P ) ~*~ I hated practicing when I was in band, but I suspect that's because it turns out I never really wanted to be in band in the first place. (My mother forced me to keep going. UGH! It was so bad that I finally said, "If, for some highly unlikely reason I fail my senior year, I am NOT doing band again!" Seven years was way more than enough!) My mom used to make me practice for a half hour--the rare times she made me practice at all. (I'm surprised she didn't make me practice more often, considering she was the one who forced me into band in the first place! But I stopped bringing home my band folder in high school, so that may have had something to do with it.) I think professionals generally practice for something like eight hours...and maybe the major band geeks. My friend/acquaintance who now has a masters in tuba performance, I think he practiced something like four hours a day; but he was probably given more time for it when he was in college and had his core classes out of the way. *shrugs* Someday, when I have a harp...I will do my best not to let it collect dust. :P
