jcpet
I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to this. I usually only play about 5 or 6 flash games, but I surf around the Neopets site quite a lot, like a couple of hours a day. I'm using Ad Blocker Plus so there are no ads. I also don't restock or anything, so I'm not refreshing the page every second... I've been suspecting that someone has been using our internet, cause my brother and I are using anywhere from 4 to 8 GB a day, and I'm finding that kinda ridiculous. We're both not downloading or streaming much at all. I don't think Neopets can use THAT much bandwidth, but maybe it's contributing to a fair amount that we're using? Emily
Surfing the site itself uses very little. I believe the biggest bandwidth eaters on Neo would be KQ and Habi, because they're constantly in communication with the servers. Even those shouldn't be using THAT much bandwidth. I keep habi up almost 24/7 and, with 3 of us using the wireless daily, it never exceeds 2-3GB unless we're doing large downloads (We're also avid Netflix users, and this is why our useage is a little higher). If you're concerned about someone having access to your wireless, you can check your router device list. Match up the devices on the router list with the IPs of the devices you know you have (any computers, game consoles with internet, phones you have that access the wireless, etc). If you see any IPs on your router list that don't match up with your devices, you'll know someone else has access. Then you can change your login information to prevent them from having access. Caro
As to the topic question, well it depends on what things you do and such but I imagine it would be only a small amount of internet. I don't know any numbers or anything but... imo there's no way Neopets would manage to rack up that amount of internet in a day. I personally am not sure as to how much Neopets itself uses but generally my family (of three people) uses around 3gb a day on average (and that's if we're online for most of the day?) ... It can depend on lots of different things though, a 5 minute music video can be somewhere up to 100mb of data but also you can stream smaller(length/quality) things for longer. Some online games would use a lot of data too but Neopets wouldn't be one of them... maybe Habitarium could accumulate to a lot but then I manage to have mine going even with dial-up and that would take a long time to rack up the numbers. Surfing the site itself shouldn't use that much since it's mostly pictures/text/a few flashes and nothing gif or video heavy. I'd assume either your brother or someone else is using up that bandwidth. Is your router secure and such? I suggest checking your network (as Emily says) :)

fairy_smile
Habi shouldn't be that bad, there are games which communicate with their servers far more often and it doesn't seem to need to transmit an awfully large amount of information. However, the main Neopets website would use quite a lot of bandwidth I'd think - due to all the images. However, if you're using a modern browser, which virtually everybody is (even on mobile devices) it will cache a lot of the images, SO the main site won't take much bandwidth either! So in conclusion, bandwitdh on the web is hard to measure :P. Interesting question though, I might try a plug-in for Firefox which measures bandwidth usage and gather some data. Usage from the main site does depend on what you do on it, but there is no way it will use 4 GiB per day, especially with the browser caching things for you. Even if you (somehow, theoretically) download a mirror of the website it will probably be less than 4 GiB. Something else's going on with your connection.
