I believe it is 5000 items that need to be discarded, 70 at a time

The junk in my trades are free, offer away :)

Some tips:

- Search junk items using shop wizard (set max price to 1np)

- get 10 junk a day from the money tree

- when it is dumping time, prepare for some really bad lag

I recently got the avatar. All I did was withdraw 5000+ items from my SDB and discard them all at once using quickstock (though only 70 are discarded at a time) until they're all gone. The lag when discarding them was really frustrating.

I just put a bunch of junk in my shop, if you'd like to check it out.

 

When I was collecting junk, I did all of the dailies, even the ones I don't normally do, to get more junk. Fishing was one of the best for that. Also, one of the most useful things for me was to check every shop I visited for 1 NP items. I figured, if it is junk, I can collect it, and if it's not junk, I just made a great buy! Plus, the easiest way for me to search was to use Ctrl+F and search for " 1 NP". I found it was best to put the space in front because then, on the rare occasion that someone prices an item as "901 NP" or something similar, my search wouldn't find it. It's a quick and easy way to check, especially if someone has a lot of stuff in their shop but not a lot of junk.

Hah, I didn't have 5000 junk in my SDB when I started. I had about 2500 and then I started buying.

Do the items have to be discarded all at once? I started discarding junk as soon as I heard about the rubbish avatar (I've discarded about 1500 items in the last couple of weeks) but I'm not sure if any of that will actually count towards getting the avvie...?

Ahh that's a shame... Time to start saving up junk in my SDB then, methinks!

No the items do not have to be discarded at once. I didn't have anything saved up when I started so I bought enough to fill my inventory, then discarded that and went back to buy more until my inventory was full again, then discarded again. It took me a couple days to do it that way, but I got the avatar when I hit 5000+.

 

I don't have much, but there are several 1NP items in my shop if you want to check it out.

Ahhh, that's great news! Thanks for letting me know :) I've just bought a load of cheap items from your shop, so I'm at about 2000 now... nearly half way there!
