Digital art n00bness

I am sure most of you have seen my drawing I won Phooca's gold BC trophy with. During the BC that I entered, people kept saying that it would be better with color. And after I saw someone mention GIMP this week, I decided to check it out.

OK, so: This is my VERY FIRST attempt in digital art. Be nice please. :P Also; I know it really needs to be cleaned up. A bunch of my lines aren't straight and my shading isn't what it should be yet. Please keep in mind that I don't have any fancy stuff like tablets; this was all made with my finger and a touch pad. :D

That being said, I'd like to know if you guys like it. :) I have been drawing old-fashioned style my whole life, and am wondering if I should just stick to my pencil, or if this broadening of my horizon is worth it. :P

Here is the original drawing:

And this is the "digitally remastered" one :P

It may not be an exact Halloween Uni, but more of a Brown Uni with Halloween Uni bandages and other textures. To be honest, it looks more like an acrylic painting if you ask me, but this is a fine first attempt of pulling off a digital art piece nonetheless.

Yeah, I thought about going with the grey/blueish Hallo uni's have, but I figured this would be easier to start off with. I have been around horses my whole life, and it is somehow easier to picture the way the shadows look and the lines of the body go in a more natural color, if you understand what I mean. ;)

The painting look is because I used the smudge tool a lot. I do like that look a lot though, and it is kind of easy to begin with. Also, it the way I do it on paper; I always smudge to get my shading.

Thank you! ^^

I cannot believe you did that with just a touch pad!!!! :O Well done, that's quite a feat! :)

I like them both ^_^

It's not bad to have an acrylicish look. Someone asked me this week if I used pastels to make my digital painting. Nope, twas entirely digital. (my thread has examples, it's "opal's art" or suchlike)

Yes, I saw your topic, and I really like your style! I love the peo one. And actually I am not sure but I think you were the one that was talking about GIMP and got me going on this... So you're to blame. :P

yes , i can't believe you did that with a touch pad either ..

beautiful stuff !!!

i don't know what lines and shades are .. but I really like it :)

:*

Thanks guys! I'd like to have a drawing pad but hubby already thinks I'm glued to the laptop so I don't think he will let me buy one. LOL

and @ Angelo: With shades I mean the shadows, my shading does not match with the place of the light source (the moon in this case) and there is no shadow on the sand. But I will just say that it is a spirit uni and they don't cast shadows like normal beings and things do. :P LOL

By lines I mean that for example the edge of the bandages are all wobbly and bumpy where I wanted them to me nice and smooth.

Personally, I don't really like the way the tail turned out. The mane, on the other hand, are much better than I expected them to turn out, so I am happy about that. Also, I love the way my stars and tree turned out. I also like the moon but maybe I should have made the shadow a bit darker. I'm kinda "meh..." when it comes to the bushes and path.

I wish I would have worked in layers, that would have made it a lot easier to make small corrections. Lesson learned, right? ;)

What program did you use to do this? I'm only familiar with Photoshop myself, but when I use it to add color to "real life" drawings, I prefer to use my original lines; on Photoshop there are ways of darkening and smoothing out those hand-drawn lines that look really nice! I think that would improve your art a lot. However, I am amazed that this is only you're first attempt. It's quite nice - keep learning and trying new things!

Thank you :*

I used GIMP 2. It's free, and I guess it is like PS (I have never used that before though so I don't know for sure). I bet I can get nice lines and stuff with this program too, but I probably need a lot of practice. :P

I purposely didn't use the original lines, because I don't like it if there are very visible lines in a digital picture, and I don't know how to smooth them out yet.

But I had a lot of fun doing this and I am sure I will work with it more often. :) Thank you all for your kind words! ^_^
