Has anyone gotten any defense when the third case is activated?

I've been looking for a good weapon to start training my pets with, would you recommend this one?

I never have. Snowballs yes. Defence, no. I don't battle a lot, but when I do, I use the staff every time. Maybe it's a possible random thing?

Ice Wand is similar, but is full blocking, though that probably could use a little confirmation...
