Mouseykins Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Ok so as the title says I just bought a Macbook Pro. This is my first Mac! I've used Mac's a little bit at school but never owned one until today. My question is do I need anything for virus protection like I do for a windows PC. What would be your recommendations? Quote
Powie Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Ok so as the title says I just bought a Macbook Pro. This is my first Mac! I've used Mac's a little bit at school but never owned one until today. My question is do I need anything for virus protection like I do for a windows PC. What would be your recommendations? Hey Mouse! (not sure what to call you, haha!) Well, that depends on how "knowledgeable" you are about using your computer. If you know how to generally take care of yourself and don't go to suspicious sites and all that, then you usually wouldn't need an anti-virus. (And you can reap the benefits of having an ultra-fast computer by not running one) If, however, you're not sure, then I recommend Kaspersky Anti-virus for Mac. It's not free, but I've heard very good reviews about it. You can find it here: https://www.kasperskyanz.com.au/kaspersky_anti-virus-for-mac Quote
binkygirl999 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 Congrats :D Virus protection - not really. I bought a new iMac last year and the sales guy said to me that he sells a few virus packages a year, and not one person ever renews the licence past the first year. My mother has had mac for 15+ years, and she's quite paranoid online (eg won't use credit cards etc) and even she doesn't have virus software. The chances of being infected by a virus are incredibly slim. There are free tools you can get to periodically check your computer for problems, but generally, that is something I do once a year or so. Quote
Xepha Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 I'm a mac user :P and I've tested Avast Beta version after it was released in June 2011. I'd say it's a good and most importantly, free, anti-virus software. It didn't seem to slow down my machine. So if you really want to install one, go for it. => http://www.avast.com/pr-avast-releases-new-mac-antivirus-beta Quote
binkygirl999 Posted September 2, 2011 Posted September 2, 2011 ClamXav is also a good, free one. Quote
