antiaircraft
Obligatory disclaimer: This news report was written to inform you all of the latest Altador Cup results in as entertaining a manner as possible. The rest of its content is largely fictional, composed from various fan comments and the whims of our imagination in an attempt to inspire a sense of realism through our reporting. Only five days of play remain in this year's round robin, and I'm sure nobody needs to be reminded of the level of tension enveloping the Colosseum as the final hours steadily dwindle away. Tensions were so high, in fact, that a number of riots erupted around the stadium over the past day, one of which involved a band of angry fans firing off several projectiles from a siege engine of some sort, demolishing several important buildings, one of which was Altador's main broadcasting station (hence the lateness of this report). Thankfully, the incident was resolved without serious injury. The match between Kreludor and Krawk Island, however, did see some serious injuries - injuries to players' egos to be exact, as Team Krawk Island absolutely dominated the Yooyuball field right from the match's outset. That's not to say it wasn't a closely fought match - after the amount of time she spent up and around Krawk Island's goal this game, there are whispers of Kreludor's Team Captain, Derlyn Fonnet, potentially shifting officially to a forward position next year, and it's undeniable that she's contributed brilliantly to Kreludor's offence in all its matches so far. This time around however, not even Kreludor's superb three-pronged offensive manoeuvres could stand against the sheer ferocity of the Pirates' play. Every time Kreludor pushed forward, it seemed like Krawk Island would regroup and push back twice as hard, with the Pirates staying well ahead in scoring rate throughout the match, and finishing with a commanding lead on the scoreboard. While they weren't able to cancel out the loss, Kreludor still countered skilfully in the side games, taking all three by a convincing margin and hanging on to their top tier spot with plenty of room to spare. While the Yooyuball play was a tad less exciting in the Meridell - Darigan Citadel game, the outcome had a far more noticeable impact on the standings. The Citadel ended up taking Yooyuball, drawing Shootout Showdown, winning Make Some Noise, and even falling barely short of outdoing Meridell's renowned slushie service, not only claiming a decisive overall victory, but also unseating their opponents for a position in the top four. "It's been a long road," acknowledged Darigan Citadel defender Tormo Frein, "but we've made our way up, and that's something we're all proud of. There's no time to relax though! The last stretch of the road to the championship is the bumpiest. There's this little thing known as 'the finals'. You may have heard of it." The Haunted Woods and Tyrannia are two teams that most certainly have heard of the finals. Much more than that, they've been breaking out every last smidgen of strength they were holding in reserve, engaging in a mad dash to pull themselves up into the best possible positions, if not for a championship run, then at least for a strong tier two finish. When 'melee' is used to describe the situation in a Yooyuball game, it's most often being used metaphorically, but just this once there's probably no word that more accurately describes the general course of the match. In fact, it's only thanks to the continued efforts of a veteran scorekeeper, and the impeccable goal tracking of the Yooyus themselves, that the match's results weren't completely lost in the chaos. With both teams playing furiously, at a level rarely seen even among such strong contenders, the Yooyuball game finally closed with both teams dead even. It fell to Tyrannia's ageless side game dominance to decide the match in their favour, taking the win convincingly with a side game sweep. Team Terror Mountain's side game play was no less outstanding, with the Chillers soaring swiftly ahead in Slushie Slinger and Make Some Noise. However, after hours of gruelling play on both sides of the pitch, Team Maraqua gained the upper hand in the Yooyu sports, taking both Yooyuball and Shootout Showdown for an overall victory. Maraqua is holding relatively well in the standings at present, with an excellent shot at a tier one position, but Terror Mountain was able to claim enough points to keep them from advancing, and to anchor themselves solidly in place for a tier two run, a commendable feat in its own right. There was another rough day in store for underdogs Faerieland, Moltara and Altador, but as always the unquenchable spirit so rarely seen elsewhere in the tournament shone bright and true, as all three teams stood firm and fought off yet another impending sweep. Matched against mid-tier powerhouse Roo Island, Team Moltara managed a draw in Slushie Slinger, as well as several fantastic goals from Moltaran forward Tulah Kisner, which (while they weren't enough to even the score) could very well feature in Yooyuball textbooks in coming years. Meanwhile, Team Altador fared slightly better against the fearsome, wildly unpredictable Mystery Island Natives, emerging with a Slushie Slinger win, despite Winberto Seliz once again managing to evade slushie duty. Team Faerieland had an even tougher match to battle through, facing off against first-ranked Team Virtupets - they were still able to beat the odds though, surprising many analysts as they glided ahead with a Shootout Showdown victory. Moving over to the contention for tier three, the Shenkuu Ninjas hoisted themselves up with a resounding victory over Team Kiko Lake, taking Yooyuball, Slushie Slinger, and Make Some Noise, rapidly closing the gap between their current position and the third tier's borders. While Kiko Lake was able to hit back with a win in Shootout Showdown, the loss inevitably knocked the Kikos down a few pegs, pushing them back to tier four. And it was none other than the Lost Desert and the Brightvale Wizards who leapfrogged ahead of Kiko Lake. Brightvale earned a full point (and the overall win) when they took Yooyuball, but were defeated across the board by the Lost Desert Mummies in the side games, keeping the Mummies on par with the Wizards in terms of match points. We'll be seeing plenty more action centred around that tier three to tier four boundary in the final days of the round robin - while the teams there may not be battling each other today, tier three contenders Shenkuu, the Lost Desert, and Brightvale are up against the Haunted Woods, Meridell, and Terror Mountain respectively. With match points growing ever more scarce, the tier three hopefuls will likely be counting on their stronger opponents' slight lull in performance to give them the edge, while the stronger teams in question will doubtless be working hard to prove that they're not running out of steam anytime soon. Meanwhile, sixth-ranked Team Maraqua's first tier chances hinge on managing to gain a favourable outcome against top-ranked Team Virtupets - the Robots are in great form however, and aren't likely to be stepping aside any time soon. It's been a fantastic Altador Cup so far, but as they always say, the best is yet to come. Good luck out there! This is AA, reporting for The Daily Neopets, signing off. voteforpedro333
One again my strange predicting powers are at work. Brightvale might have won but in the end it was beneficial for the both of us, moving into third tier while no one was keeping track! So good job there. Promise me that we'll both keep those spots, cool? (Unless we both move upwards, of course.) LD's last five teams to play are an interesting group: Meridell, Krawk Island, Mystery Island, Terror Mountain, and Virtupets. Don't think for a second we're just a blip on the radar! AgJu
Not counting Brightvale, the last few teams Terror Mountain has to face are all teams we did well against in the first round...Altador (took all but SS), Kreludor (took all sidegames), Lost Desert (near sweep), and Roo Island (full sweep). Hopefully history repeats itself, although it will still be a tough battle!
