riopk217
Hey all, I'm a 20-something male, not your typical Neopets user but hey -- I'm a bit of a general geek, programmer, (terrible) artist and (mediocre) writer. I like to roleplay, like to daydream about Neopets adventures (usually whilst sitting in University lectures) and I like to talk politics. I've been playing around nine years, on and off, and tend to consider myself a bit of a stock market guru (my port is worth about 5m) and a novice at everything else. My favourite pets are Maraquan, there's just something about aquaticness and cuteness going together that really aesthetically works for me. I have actually created a number of aquatic characters myself (non-Neopets) and (badly) drawn them. These are usually a part of some game project which never really gets anywhere because I don't have the commitment to see it through. Hidealani is my only 'dreamie', and I got him around this time last year in a trade. I'm also a blogger, I have a politics blog and a computing/design blog, both of which get updated regularly now and again. I still don't have any D/UC/Ks, but one day maybe I will (I don't really like a lot of them, but I almost feel like a Mara UC would be the best guard against Boochi / Rainbow Waterfall which doesn't involve me having to have a pet I don't really want as my active. Anyway, enough about me, hope I'll spend enough time here and you'll learn more. Ciao, Matteo.
Xepha
Hello and welcome to TDN forums :) I hope you have fun around here and that you make some friends. Maraquans are also my favorite pets. Well, I love everything Maraqua so that's probably why I've always been supporting Maraqua in the Altador Cup and that my guild is dedicated to Maraqua & Water ;) From what I saw on your blog, your drawings skills are not so bad. I'm a mac user and I study computation arts since September. Oh and I've been on TDN staff for quite some times now, so if you have any questions about Neopets or TDN in general, feel free to ask me :D
riopk217
As you could probably tell from a glance at my blogs, I'm also a Mac user and a second-year Computer Science student in London. I've done a lot of programming and used Objective-C, C++, Java, php, perl, MySQL, CSS etc. so I'm pretty up to scratch in that department. I'm sure I could have a million questions about Neopets (how, other than the stock market, can you make a lot of NP? -- for example) and I'll have some soon about TDN (like about the ALP). Xepha
Stock market is definitely a good thing to do daily. Always buy 1000 shares of a stock at 15nps/share and sell when it hits your sell point. (Mine is 60np a share or more). I'm currently learning Processing. It's derivated from Java and it's been fun :). We are gonna see arrays next week, so I'm looking forward to it.
riopk217
Arrays are always useful, Java has terrible array processing though, you have to use ArrayLists to get something dynamic, and then you can't store integers or characters without holding objects, which you can't use case statements on without hashCodes. I'm buying stocks at 15 and selling at 64 at the moment. Have accrued around 5m on there, but it's peanuts compared to what some people have on Neopets. I guess what I'm really looking for is the way to make huge cash so I can buy things like Draik Eggs and Mara brushes.
Xepha
Those are long term goal :) A bunch of us are doing Food Club... and since your account is 9 years old, I can see it becoming a major income for you.
riopk217
Will check out the Food Club, just placed some bets there and hoping for the best.
antiaircraft
Hi Matteo, and welcome to TDN! We've kinda met on another thread, so I figured I might as well go ahead with an introduction. :P I'm Theo (also known as AA), a slightly less experienced general geek (about three years to twenty as of this post), occasional bad writer (I really don't know how I managed to land a job on the content team xD ), free and open source software advocate, and absolutely terrible (if enthusiastic) programmer. As in the sort that thinks it's a good idea to write a web application with 50+ slow database queries per pageload, then run it on a web server in Malaysia with the database server halfway around the world. I'm also something of a stock market guru on Neopets, although I went on a spending spree not too long ago and ended up with a blank portfolio and total assets valued at about 500 NP. So yeah, I'm probably not the best guy to ask for Neopets advice, unless it's the technical kind (but then you probably have that covered). At least I get to chat with the Soup Faerie regularly. xD Anyway, once again, welcome to TDN! Enjoy your stay!
riopk217
I, too, am a strong advocate of open source software. I used to be a part of the Gentoo Linux support team, and have contributed code to Gentoo's portage system, the Chromium browser and the Linux kernel amongst others. riopk217
These days I work with Mac OS X more than anything else. Trying to learn Objective C to a higher standard.
Tedhaun
Glad you made it here to The Daily Neopets, riopk217. There are Neopets addicts galore in this community, I happen to be one of them. They call me Neomysterion, and I am also a nerd for chocolates and the original NES as well as Neopets. Let your time here at The Daily Neopets be worthwhile.
antiaircraft
These days I work with Mac OS X more than anything else. Trying to learn Objective C to a higher standard. Heh, I'm more of a plain C or C++ guy myself, although I work with a dash of Python here and there too. I've kinda fallen in love with PHP as well, although any advantages that might have provided me in terms of web programming are offset by my strong dislike of SQL (I do actually like JavaScript though, which I presume is pretty unusual xD ). I've always hated Java, which is probably unjustified now, but I've never really been able to get over my horrid first impressions. If there's one thing I absolutely loathe though, it's Assembly languages. x_x Mac OS X is a little too locked down for my taste - although considering my (lack of) skill level, that really shouldn't be making much of a difference. :P
riopk217
Part of the challenge is getting around the lockdown, AA. Much as I hate being jailed, I do love Apple products because they offer so much power and longevity in a great package. I have a MacBook Pro i7 and an iPad and I'm working on an iPod Touch 4th Gen. I don't have any issue with coding C++ or C, not really a fan of php (I prefer perl, and I hate web coding anyway because Ajax is such a pain). I am considering creating a virtual pet site at some point, just as a proof of concept. That'd probably use perl, ajax, XHTML and MySQL. Neomysterion: I'm currently working on a system for Food Club on Neopets. I'm working on the real odds of success and aiming for chance of profit and expected pay off. Day 1 wasn't very successful though, but here's to day two. I'm also working on my neohome, but I'm somewhat irritated at the lack of good NP items. Seems like I can't even get a fridge or a stove. antiaircraft
Sounds like quite an interesting challenge there. And I must say I'm a little envious of your hardware, seeing as I'm stuck working on a couple of ancient Acer and HP computers (well the HP isn't so ancient, but it's a netbook). I've been meaning to take up Perl for a while now (a bit odd that Perl-style regex was where I first heard of it I think xD ), although I should probably get a bit more fluent in the languages I do know first. The furthest I've gotten with AJAX was some experimentation with jQuery.
