CAV of Gang Green
The reason why Avatar is so amazing is that yes, it follows a basic storyline that was used many times. But they used it in a way that made it seem like Avatar was completely original. 3-D effects also amplifies this. You can't watch a movie with a great story but bad visuals. Nyssa
I didn't think Avatar was bad, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it. But the hype is just a little too much. It's nowhere near to be 'the best movie ever' in my opinion. It just bugs me because people make it great, but if you step aside, it really isn't TOO special. (and I'm not saying Titanic is). But I guess sci-fi isn't really my thing either, so that migt influence my opinion as well ;p

It wasn't because of media and public, but my personal opinion, somehow, the movie leaves you wanting more, more of the fantasy world, more of the awesome graphics and more of the story... that in my opinion is what's really awesome about it, compared to titanic, which had a definite ending, this one is incomplete if you know what i mean? Shane for Wax
Speaking of wanting more, James Cameron says there may be a sequel in the works. Just thought I'd share. ;)
shdwfeather
Just gotta toss my two cents to this: I only have a really fuzzy memory of Titanic (since I saw it years ago), but if I'm remembering it correctly, they're two completely different movies. It's rather hard to compare. You watched Titanic for the romance (I think), but Avatar is just a pure visual treat. With Real 3D's circular polarization, there's no flickering that you get with linearly polarized glasses which gives me headaches, usually. Avatar was not so much about the story; the story was just a means to introduce the audience into this vast, rich world. I can't believe how much detail went into the flora and fauna of Pandora. Absolutely astounding. Wouldn't vote Best Picture for it, but I'd watch the movie over, and over again. Also, about Avatar surpassing Titanic in box office records--this sort of information usually does not take ticket price inflation into account. Ticket sales figures are a much more reliable way of measuring the "popularity" of a movie.

englandnz
i think avatar was better. i mean not waaaaay better but better. it was really good, it had good graphics, and it was the most expensive movie ever made! I actually would say that it was way better. The graphics were amazing, the 3d was fantastic and it appealed to a far wider range of people than just teenage girls, due to the entire focus not being on the love story (ie there was actually some action) I don't get why many people seem to love panning the storyline. Yes it was simple. Yes it was rather predictable. But it was also (for a Scifi movie) fairly believable. And to be honest most stories aren't original, merely slight alterations of those that have been around for hundred of years. Do we really need some mind numbingly ingenious storyline that twists and turns into absurdity every few minutes? Anyway, there is no requirement for an original plot for a story to be good. The telling of the story is far more important than the story itself and the way Avatar told its story was simply breathtaking.

You're right about the stories etc. however, I do think that Avatars story could have been a little more exciting. But maybe that had more to do with my expectations than the story itself. But calling a movie great because it's the most expensive movie ever made isn't really a valid argument in my opinion. I think it's ridiculous how much moviemaking costs, especially since there's a 'financial crisis' going on.
Phil
Ok, here's my view on the avatar storyline coupled with the graphics. The same general storyline was used, yes, the white man saving a foreign race, and then he gets the biggest bird (remember, near the end), he gets the girl :P and in order to do so he tried to become part of their culture. Yes, heard it all before. What you didn't hear before, however was the whole "ponytail bonding with the universe" thing. That was new. The god's name, Elyon I believe, was new. Although their religion, generally tree-hugging has been seen before. What would make this interesting, yet ordinary movie great would be the seamless 3-D graphics that aren't popping out at you and shoving the images down your throat every three seconds. They surround you and don't try to attack, which is always a thumbs up in my book. Sure, the general concepts are the same, but there are also several creative twists in the plotline, coupled with the amazing graphics. You've got yourself a good movie there. Kex
One, their goddess is Eywa. Two, plugging into the world was done in The Matrix. XD It's also the wet dream of many internet denizens, to be able to plug themselves into a network to exchange information and experience. I'm not saying the movie wasn't good. It was good, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. It's just not a breathtakingly original masterpiece.

But why does something have to be totally original to be breathtaking or to be classed as a masterpiece? As I said before, it is the way the story is told that makes or breaks a movie, not the story itself.
ludachick2007
I have seen a lot of movies over 20 years but none of them have compared to Avatar. I would literally watch that movie every day for the rest of my life it is just that good. It has everything a movie should have and so much more. The beginning is a little long so it takes awhile to get into, but once your in the movie you are definitely not coming out if you know what I mean. pottawatomie
Avatar has a terrible plot, but awesome picture quality... I mean, they made BLUE PEOPLE look real. Titanic is just awesome... plus, young Leo DiCaprio(sp?)= <

Just thought I'd share. ;) Yes, I've heard of this and I can't wait. There's acually been rumors that it would be a trilogy. Either way, it would be cool. Right now there's a battle for my choice of greatest movie ever. Avatar or The Dark Knight. It's World War III.
