Well since we already have a topic on preferred browsers, I thought it would be only fitting to have one on operating systems as well. Feel free to evangelize or vent your frustrations about a specific OS. Just don't get tied up in a flame war or anything like that.

(I alternate between Windows XP and Windows Vista.)

But I chose Windows Vista in the poll because my laptop has Vista. Some people like vista, and some people...[sorta] dislike it xD (That would have to be me) It actually looks better than XP, imo. (I've been a Vista user for less than one year (I've been using Vista since late December), and an XP user for around 5 years. But Windows Vista > XP, though I don't really like both...Vista was a big leap from XP, I guess. I think I might have gotten sick of using XP...)

But if there was another operating system that I would like to use, it would probably have to be any version of Ubuntu Linux. I've been curious about it for a while now, especially with being a Windows user for nearly half of my life (which was in 2003, I think). It would be good to me if I finally had experiences with a non-Windows operating system. I am sure that lots of people like it because it's sorta unique and such...>w<

I haven't tried any of the operating systems in the Mac OS X line yet, though I am curious about them too. Only problem is, most Macs are pretty expensive, and I don't know if it's worth the money for one...they look so cool >w<

I guess sticking to Windows for a few more years won't hurt. =) Though switching is fine with me, I guess. (;

I'm using a Vista right now. Don't see why people hate it so much though. :/ Only thing I find annoying is the constant "Cancel or Allow" thing with certain programs (FLV player being one).

As a gamer, I'm inclined to prefer XP. There's just too little going for the Mac in terms of gaming and Linux just doesn't seem to be to my liking.

I have Windows Vista and Windows XP.

The look of Windows Vista is great, but it is more prone to bugs. Overall, I think the whole "Windows Vista is so bad" thing was really over-hyped.

XP is nice, but is kinda plain.

I've never been that fond of Mac's, but I haven't used one in a while.

XD I appear to have forgotten to mention my operating system of choice.

I use Ubuntu Linux 8.04 'Hardy Heron' (extremely heavily modified), and so far, in addition to being free and open-source, I've found it to have everything I need. It has the most intuitive package management system (for installing/updating/removing software) I've seen in any operating system, other Linux distributions included, and is fully compatible with a wide range of open-source software that comprehensively meets my requirements and expectations. On top of that, its security beats out that of any Windows system hands down, and gives Mac's a run for its money (I won't pass judgement on Mac security vs. Linux security, since Mac OS X is built on the technologies that Linux has been using). The system is also almost 100% stable with my computer's hardware, or at least it would be if I didn't keep playing around and breaking the configuration files every five minutes. :P

On the downside, hardware support for Linux is kind of touchy at the moment (Linux isn't that popular, so most hardware vendors only give it limited attention). Also, some of the better software available for Windows and Mac can't quite be replaced by their Linux-compatible equivalents (Photoshop is one example). For a full list of considerations to take into account if you're planning to switch to Ubuntu (or other Linux distributions for that matter) take a look at this.

I use Vista as my primary OS, but also have XP. I like parts of both - the graphical interface of Vista, and the functionality of XP. Too bad I couldn't combine them!

I've used Macs in the past, but found them hard to get used to. Who knowns, maybe I've give them another try before I get a new laptop.

I use Windows Vista on my main PC, so I marked that as my operating system. However, I also have Leopard installed on the same machine (no, it's not a Mac, I'll explain further on), so I switch between them, although I spend more time on Vista due to my daily needs and such. I do prefer Mac OS X Leopard a lot more though.

I used to have Linux (Ubuntu Gutsy, 7.10) in double boot with my Vista installation, but I hardly used it due to it not fulfilling my needs and it was just for some testing and wandering around in an Unix environment. So then I joined the OSX86 project (InsanelyMac is the main website), which basically is the joint effort of thousands of developers and testers (I'm one of the latter) to make Apple's Operating Systems run as well as possible on a PC. Many people have joined this project, and while being illegal according to Apple's EULA (which states that you cannot [as in ''shouldn't'', not ''not able to''] run any of their OSes on non-Apple hardware), we've managed to make people even more enthusiastic in leaving the boring Windows environment and trying out a different OS.

However, when this project started, it was very limited and only Intel SSE3 processors could run it with a lot of quirks. Now, with the effort of a lot of developers, we're able to run this on an AMD SSE2 (the limit Leopard can run on). I have one of those, so I installed it, and if you want to take a look, simply click the attached screenie. :)

It's mainly curiosity and testing efforts of Mac lovers that wish to test their future main OS (which will be mine one day, once I buy a real Mac) on a PC. :)
