Superfly
Hello everyone. Firefox 3 has been in beta for quite sometime now and the popular Spreadfirefox.com is working with firefox (i'm assuming) to set a world record to have the most software downloads in 24 hours. They are calling it Download Day So, it's pretty simple, all you have to do is click those banners above, or here and pledge to download Firefix 3 the day it's released from Mozilla. Now the official date has not been released, but when you pledge all you have to do is give your country and email address - so there is nothing /that/ important or private to give away. They will use your email address to inform you of the date and remind you on that day to download Firefox 3. It's simple. It's free. It's better for you and your computer. Get rid of IE. Download Day. Spread the word!
m3l3ana
Do you know what the current record is TJ? I have been trying to find it on the website, but can't seem to :S
Guest Levy
Users of FF2, won't it automatically update?
Superfly
Do you know what the current record is TJ? I have been trying to find it on the website, but can't seem to :S Nope, and it doesn't say on spreadfirefox.com Users of FF2, won't it automatically update? I'm not sure if it will or not. I think how it generally works is updates for current versions are automatically downloaded, but you have to manually download a whole new version. I remember having to download IE7 from IE6 and then IE8 from that. I've never upgraded a whole version with FF or Safari, so I'm not 100% sure. MarkOfEternity
Do you happen to know if the Firefox add-ons that were created for the previous versions of firefox will work on firefox 3?
m3l3ana
Right so I decided to do a google search and all I could find was this http://www.thestandard.com/predictions/sug...ecord-foxfire-3 If someone else has more time, maybe they can do a more thorough seach! It is only a prediction, but it does say for the prediction to be correct there needs to be 3 million downloads!!?
Superfly
Do you happen to know if the Firefox add-ons that were created for the previous versions of firefox will work on firefox 3? Again, I cannot say for sure, but I believe that some of them will and some of them will have to be updated. I know when I used the beta version some of mine didn't work. I'm sure the creators of the add ons will update them though, especially if they are popular ones. ;)
MarkOfEternity
Thank you. I've decided to sign up and get the notice when the new version becomes available. Anything to help with a world record, after all...
Guest Sloth Von Karma
Yep, I've already pledged as I love Firefox (and Safari). :P
Xepha
Thanks for pledging to help set this world record by downloading Firefox 3. We’ll send you an email reminder to let you know when it’s time, but check back here often for updates. There we go :) I should receive an email on download day! Exciting! Matt
Just to add, seeing as I skimmed through the reponses and didn't see the answer, I'll tell you. There's no current record for it. They're setting the mark for others to beat. I probably will participate, only because I love setting records. I won't blog about it, though, TJ. But thanks for the comment. :P
Superfly
Matthew = Record Setter :) You really should blog about it though, or do you not want your friends to know your geekiness. :O Anyway, all should pledge and help spread the word, via spreadfirefox.com :)
TheUnknown
Sounds interesting... But I wonder if FF3.0 will conflict in any way with the Neopets Toolbar...
MarkOfEternity
Sounds interesting... But I wonder if FF3.0 will conflict in any way with the Neopets Toolbar... Oh, that would be bad! I hate using I.E., but I would have to start using it again just so I could get Tarla's alerts. Let's hope there is no problem.
antiaircraft
Well it seems like our hard work on Firefox 3 is getting some attention. :P Concerning the add-ons question: Yes, there will be a number of add-ons that have compatibility issues with Firefox 3. Most of these issues will basically result from the compatibility check data for the add-on not being updated yet, but that should be fixed promptly. There may also be a few add-ons that are actually messed up in FF3, but those should also be cleared up with a couple of bug fixes (there aren't that many changes to the APIs). Concerning the update question: Users of FF2 will get an automatic update to FF3. However, the update will only be pushed to the servers once FF3 has been out for a few days, just in case there are any critical issues. By the way, we expect to have the final version of Firefox 3 out in mid-June. :D The second release candidate is due in 4 days.
Katja
Weeee! I think I'm gonna download it. I hate IE...

PHPG
I think it's up to 190-200 thousand people have already pledged from the US alone... Wow o_O
TheUnknown
So, the Toolbar by default doesn't work with FF3?
Guest Krawk Islander
So, the Toolbar by default doesn't work with FF3? No, not yet. It is expected that TNT get compatibility out very soon, though.
_tomboy_20
Thanks Superfly for the info. I just made my pledge and the total for the US is 212,359. The total for all is 1,279,828. o_O That's pretty amazing!
Hunter9009
I think I'll pledge now! I hope firefox makes it!
antiaircraft
Get ready to download in (approximately) nine hours people! b) We're wrapping things up now, setting up the final builds and making sure they work. We're actually having a few issues with the installers, but hopefully that shouldn't nudge the schedule too much.
PHPG
I find it odd that Poland of all countries had the 2nd most amount of pledges to download Firefox 3. o_O
antiaircraft
Well some places will just surprise you like that. I tend to ignore countries and such when thinking about the internet community though - we're just one big lump of people. :P And judging by the number of pledges, the Download Day record will really be one to beat.
