Ashley Rose
So, usually I can fix my own computer issues with no problem! Of course this tiny stupid issue I can't figure out! So here's the deal.... I turned my computer on, and guess what, the speaker icon that controls the volume isn't in the notification area like it usually is, now I am not a complete idiot I know you can right click, go to properties, then the notification area tab and click the box next to volume.....problem is, it won't let me click that box! Then I realize that my network icon is gone and well, and same problem it won't let me click the box for that either! So I went to control panels went to the sound part and there isn't anything in there to try to get the icon back on the notification section of my taskbar, I searched google and found nothing for vista, just XP and those people didn't have the sound because it was uninstalled and they got an error message, I am not....plus this is a vista OS.....I hate vista by the way! I restarted the computer and tried that to see if that would work.....and it didn't! So if anyone knows how to fix this issue I would be happy to have your help! Thanks in advance for any help I might get!
Superfly
I think that happened to me on my XP, but I only every got it back temporarily by doing a System Restore. So, try that. It did go back away again - I forget how long later. I of course use a Mac now, so free plug for Apple. Get a Mac. :D
Ashley Rose
That is the one thing I hate doing but I figured it would have to come to that! Thanks for the help!
Guest Sloth Von Karma
Vista sucks, I must agree. Get a Mac, you'll be better served. Or just...go back to XP. :P
antiaircraft
Yes, system restore is very annoying (and it doesn't even work half the time). But I think that's the easiest solution in your case, considering that Microsoft doesn't release its individual applets for download and install... If you don't want to fork up a couple thousand bucks for a Mac, you could always try a Linux system.

Servers, yup. But that's as far as it goes, IMO.
antiaircraft
Oddly enough I'm using a Linux distro everyday without any problems. :P We might just be looking for different things though - what Linux distros have you tried (name and version)? Ashley Rose
Okay for some odd reason out of nowhere the thing just showed back up! So, I am not going to do a system restore....today at least I am sure I will have to soon because this thing is starting to act like it did before it crashed back in December! As soon as I am done with school in May and start a real job I am going to get a new computer...not sure what I will get yet though! Thanks for all your help everyone! antiaircraft
Well Windows is a weird little thing... I would have suggested checking the service manager, but I'm not sure if that works in Vista.

Only Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 - great OS, but I prefer Windows Vista.
Matt
Suggesting other operating systems and even new computers really doesn't solve the problem of a little icon in their current computer, does it. :/ Sounds to me like there's something dodgy with the drivers. Basically, your computer is thinking you don't have any speakers. Or a network set up. Best bet is to go to the manufacturer's website of whatever is missing and download the newest drivers. Sometimes that simply solves the problem.
Ellie_Penguin
That is the main reason you should NOT get Vista, until they release all of the packs (at least Service Pack 2). Right now it has so many glitches that my friends are going back to XP and are returning their Vista programs back to the store. Even the school's tech guys are not installing vista and recommend not to do it until they fix all the glitches.
antiaircraft
I only suggested a new operating system because somebody else suggested buying a Mac. :P Well it's fixed anyway.
