Truly, they had played a bigger part a few years ago when they could actually participate in the fight alongside your pet and assist you in defeating your opponents. But, this is off topic. The more appealing a petpet is, the more expensive it will be. A good place to go to view a petpet before getting it, and determining what color you'd like for it, can be found here. I was searching for a christmas present...but none of the petpetpets I wanted were able to find at TP or Wiz... Ok...
