Petpet Battle Strategies?

A couple of days ago was the first time I've logged into Neopets in a few years and I've found myself dabbling once again in the Petpet battles using one I've just given my newest neopet.

 

I'm looking for some effective up-to-date strategies for winning while still level one. The only one I've come across while doing a Google search was posted to another forum in 2005:

(This actually even predates my membership on Neopets by almost exactly a year)

 

There is a major change in the game that I've noticed in a past couple of days from when I last played several years ago; you can no longer choose NOT to battle an opponent that out levels you, but there seems to only be a single level one opponent in the selection.

 

So how do you make that work when your petpet is still level one since you lose a point towards the required ten to level up for every loss? Or is it just luck?

 

 

Consider this no longer an issue. I've fought my way through to level 3 now with a solid strategy.
