Anyone know anything about physio?

Hey all just looking for some advice, I am planning to call my physio tomorrow but thought I'd poke some brains.

To cut a long story short I have dysplasia in my right hip which causes chronic and constant inflammation, I had a minor procedure last Friday designed to make the physio I am doing now in prep for a bigger op easier.

I'm supposed to do the exercises 4 times a day but I knew I wouldn't be able to straight away so I have built up to twice a day and I'm in a lot of pain, not the achy working muscles pain but my normal everyday pain that I get from the impingement of the ball on the socket. Am I doing the physio wrong? Should I keep going or wait to see what the physio says?

Many Thanks,

Heidi

Hi!

I assume a physiotherapist showed you these exercises and told you to do them. Do you have good contact with this physiotherapist? Have you established a trust?

My mother has pain in some of her joints. Last time she went to a physiotherapist she had to seek out a new one because her regular was on vacation. This new therapist showed her a couple of exercises. When my mother did them at home, she experienced a lot of pain and in the end she chose not to continue exercising simply because she didn't trust this new therapist and was afraid she did something wrong. She visited her regular therapist again after the vacation was over, got a couple of exercises, performed them and wasn't afraid of any pain.

I believe it's important to have a good contact with your physiotherapist. If you have good contact with yours I'd say continue exercising no matter the pain. If not I would personally have thought twice!

Hi! Thanks for answering.

This physio came round just before my procedure and said he would refer me to a physio closer to where I live. The specialist I am under is two hours train ride away but he is a specialist in young people with hip problems so he is the best for me.

Anyhow, the physio wrote his number at the bottom of the sheet and told me to call him if I didn't get a physio appointment in Liverpool within two weeks, I will try and call him tomorrow, if he is useless, I will contact my GP because I have an excellent relationship with her, she trusts me to know my body and I trust her to listen and make the best judgement.

I think I will still do my exercises in the morning, my hip isn't too bad in the morning, it's later on it gets sorer.

Edit: Just wanted to add, the exercises are to strengthen my muscles before I have major surgery to correct the dysplasia and I am already seeing a difference, my leg was really shaky and weak to start with and it's already much steadier but I don't want to strengthen my muscles at the expense of increasing my pain level. They did inject a powerful anti-inflammation drug in as well on Friday but it's always a bit hit and miss whether it works, seems it hasn't this time. If it had then I imagine doing the physio wouldn't hurt at all.

Keep in mind as I say this that I am only an expert in having pain. I am not a medical expert. I have an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in my spine.

It stinks to exercise when you're in pain, but of course it's important. I'm just now strengthening muscles, and it's improving a lot--having the stronger muscles makes it a lot easier to do everything without accidentally stressing something I shouldn't stress. But if your exercises are stressing something you shouldn't stress, it might be time to take it down a notch and work your way up.

The question isn't whether you're having pain DURING the exercises. Sadly, of course you will. The question is, what's it like after the exercises? If you lie down for an hour after, do you feel better? Are you feeling tenderness in a weird snappy way...you know, you'll only understand what I mean by that if you have it. But where it feels like the slightest wind could knock your hip apart?

If you're not healing from it pretty quickly (soreness should appear the next morning, so don't count that) then it could be a problem. Pain during the exercise is not a huge problem, other than...ow.

Thank you for your answer.

I'm not having pain during the excerises except for a stretchy pain on the outside of my leg which I know is normal coz its the abductor muscles they want me to work on... it's later on I have this horrible burning pain in the front of my leg in the groin area which is where I have my normal everyday pain but kicked up a few notches so I have to take my tramadol and my codeine.

I was still feeling really sore in that area this morning so I haven't done my exercises, called my physio and left a message to get back to me so I will see what he says. If he doesn't get back to me I will speak to my GP and see what they advise.
